(so much value in the content). Melissa, I was enlightened by your thoughts about the sovereign One (God) giving me free will and agency and choice over my mind, body, and spirit. Why would a divine God give us that, only to surrender it to a human? Such great insight. It also reminds me of how everyone misquotes Ephesians 5:21-25. God calls for MUTUAL submission. And if your believing spouse does NOT love you how Christ loved the Church, your obligation to submission is something you need to sort out in a licensed Christian therapists office. It’s hard to honor the dishonorable. God calls us to not be fools, to confront evil, and not turn a blind eye. People get the message so wrong and then try to craft marriages out of false and toxic faith/theology. That’s my ✌🏾 cents

    • @MorganVeryMuch
      @MorganVeryMuch 3 года назад

My thoughts when she said autonomy over her own body was this: GOD gave us individual autonomy over our bodies. GOD also gave men access to override our autonomy over our bodies. Then GOD also gave women ways to access man's autonomy over his free will. It would be more powerful to accept the whole circle.

And regarding the submissive conversation, Melissa hit it on the head regarding trust. You hear a lot (especially targeted towards Black women) that they're not soft, they're too hard. And I'm like can they trust you to be gentle with them? You don't give a reckless child an egg, cuz chances are they'll break it. It's definitely a defense mechanism. For ppl who have been disregarded a lot, it can feel like that will be the default.

The description of the way Jo receives and gives love is the focal point of acceptance that many people in romantic relationships have such a hard time understanding.
I commend you as parents for allowing that to be what he needs and gives without making it wrong.
I just ended a relationship because the person was so unwilling to accept what I could give and receive even after trying hard to do it his way. It was draining and made me feel like something was wrong with me.
Therapy has helped me to navigate it.

agreed, it's actually so beautiful and not as common as it should be to understand and accept the way your child wants to be loved and to respect their boundaries. If more parents were this intentional with raising their kids, we'd have a lot more well-adjusted adults. I don't plan to have kids, but I love learning about relationships and parenting through Liss and Kev learning along the way!

  • @karendrives970

I think the issue is that people too often thing that trust solely revolves around whether or not someone will cheat/infidelity, when it's so much more than that. Can I trust you to make decisions that will benefit our family? Can I trust you to care for me and the family should I become incapacitated? Trust is a major issue in many relationships, and I think people don't learn how to express their needs in a way that builds trust. Post I Do's is not the time to realize that your partner in life is self centered, no good with money, etc. We need to learn to better express our needs, and to understand that needs change over time.

Who wears the pants in marriage? There are two Christian perspectives on this: Complementarianism and Egalitarianism. Complementarianism interprets Scripture as it is God's will for men to lead in marriage. Egalitarianism interprets Scripture thusly: in Genesis we don't see human hierarchies come into play until after the fall, so we should live towards God's intended purposes for humanity rather than toward social structures that came out of the fall. (Paul, Women, & Wives by Craig Keener is a great book on this by a theologian who loves God and Scripture)
Growing up AME, we embraced egalitarianism. As a methodist woman pastor, it has been a blessing to my walk with God and the way I relate to my man.
I'd love for you guys to comment on the different perspectives one day. Love your show!

Nikki spoke to the guy after Molly told that story and after Molly passed. It seemed like that encounter was more of Molly not letting cancer take away pleasure and her ability to engage in life. Is it bad that as you retell the stories, I could see myself listening to it again in the future😭? It was such good story telling. Hearing Nikki talk about all the plans they had for a season 2 in her interview made me sad. It was hard hearing her say they thought they had more time. They actually did 3 special episodes during the pandemic. They interviewed "Toyota guy"/guy that ejaculated outside the car (Scott) on the dating episode. It was really good and even weird to listen back to the early moments of the pandemic in the US.

Also trigger warning for sexual abuse with that podcast. I said the same thing. I would never reccomend Dying for Sex to anyone but I'm glad I listened. My tears started when she talked about interviewing people to help her die. I can see this podcast being a movie. When she talked about a trip being planned for her on the final episode, baby it was over😭😭😭. Had to force myself out the house the day I finished or I would have been crying all day.

I listened to the podcast right after Melissa mentioned it last week. Maaaaaaaannnn. I anticipated what Episode 6 was going to be about and still wasn't fully ready. It's a beautiful ending, all things considered.

My oldest is Kenneth II and we just call him KenKen. I refused to do Jr. bc I didn’t want ppl calling him KJ or Junior or any variation of Junior 🤷🏽‍♀️ Plus Kenneth II Esq. flows better than Kenneth Jr. Esq. 😏😄

My dad is a junior. The 3rd actually. His nickname is June. My brother is the 4th. We called him Lil Willis growing up.

I hate the “lil” names. That’s how your big and tall uncle gets call “lil Derrick” when he 50 6’5” and 300 lbs. My dad was Edward Jr all his life then when my grandfather passed they Finally started just calling him Edward at 60+.

@@HopeGrant423 Lol true. My brother happens to be the smallest of the boys though. Both in height and weight. Also, my siblings and I don’t call him Lil Willis anymore. Just when we were kids.
