The cool thing about Ayreon is that all the albums sort of tie into the same story. 'The Source' (the album which this song is from) is technically the start of the story. It's about a race of humans that give control of their planet to a computer (the 'frame) to help solve an environmental catastrophe, but the computer determines that the best course of action is to eliminate the humans. Ten humans and the robot TH-1 escape the planet on the only interstellar ship they have (the 'Starblade') along with the ship's crew and head to an ocean planet. The chemist creates a drug ('The Source', aka 'Liquid Eternity') that allows them to evolve into an 'aquatic race'. The drug also makes them basically immortal and allows them to communicate telepathically. The album ends with the survivors (ten plus the ships small crew) living on their new planet ('Planet Y') in relative peace, but in the final track we learn that TH-1 is becoming a new version of the 'frame deep in the ocean. The next album in the timeline, 01011001 ('Y') tells us how machines have now taken over this new planet, and the humans have basically merged with the machines are losing their emotions and sense of time. They now call themselves 'The Forever', since they are essentially ageless drones at this point. We also learn about how they seeded a comet with DNA and sent it to Earth, where it creates human life on our planet. The Forever believe they can live through us telepathically and that they may regain their emotions by doing so. Some of The Forever believe that we need to advance more quickly, and use their telepathy to give us medicine/technology, but this results in us advancing quicker than our morality can cope with. Eventually The Forever realize humanity is doomed and has to decide if they will give them the technology to reverse their past mistakes. Somewhere in the timeline sits the album "The Electric Castle" From a summary by Arjen: "At the end of the journey those that successfully dealt with their personal demons find out that the voice belongs to an alien named 'Forever of the Stars', a member of an alien race living in a distant galaxy. These aliens created planet Earth and its people as an experiment so they could study, and hopefully one day experience emotions, as they themselves lost feelings eons ago." That's only three albums (less than half!) but I believe those three give you a solid foundation for how the story plays out. Also, I highly recommend any of the Electric Castle Live videos; They are just so fun to watch, plus John de Lancie ('Q' from Star Trek) plays the 'Forever of the Stars' character, which Arjen said he originally based on Q.

The entire album is fantastic... made me order the CD as soon as I saw this video a few years ago... i'm with you, i love all the inside information that Arjen gives to us, just so good, not to mention the brilliant musicianship. My Ayreon collection has definitely grown since, along with a few special vinyl releases. Great stuff.

I remember the song we are the word with all these great pop singers, then watching the deep purple song Smoke on the water performed by a mixed bunch of metal singers like Bruce Dickinson. Etc Then there's the Amazing Talent Arjen brings in and who wouldn't want to perform for such a masterful talented person.
Bruce Dickinson won't. It's not that he wasn't interested but Arjen seem to have let out the cat from the bag too early that BD would be working with him pissing of either BD himself or BD's management and they called of the colab. That's at least as I have understood it.

Great reaction from a fellow Aussie, Arjon is an awsom dude to comment on your reaction as he spends a lot of time giving back to his fans (a real artist- in it for the music). It's worth checking out "Ayreon universe live, Star of sirrah, everybody dies" and others, and our Aussie lad Mike Mills kills it here too ! By watching Ayreon, it's like a great introduction to new stellar artist that otherwise you may have never come across. There is something in the water over in Sweden, Finland etc because their live musicianship is amazing. Enjoy the ride !

I have to say I love how you spent the time to look up the artist you didn't know and to figure out what bands they belong to. It's such a neat touch compared to other reactions I have seen where you actually have an appreciation for the metal genre and the many bands that belong to it.
One of the artists that you were not super familiar with Tobias Sammet actually has two bands. His primary band is more hard rock/neo-classical metal/heavy metal depending on the album. Avantasia actually started out as a side project but is a very similar style of a rock opera featuring several different artists across the metal scene. The cool part is there is an ever growing list of artists that have contributed to both bands including Tobias and Arjen themselves. Tobias obviously being a major part of the album The Source but Arjen provided a guitar solo for the track "The Watchmaker's Dream" off of Avantasia's 2013 album The Mystery of Time.

Great reaction. There is so much wonderful stuff created by Arjen that you should listen to when you can. What I must recommend above all is the live recording that was made "Ayreon Universe" which you will no doubt hit soon (if you haven't already). There is nothing there that is not worth many listens, but within that the linked pair of songs "the backboard / theory of everything" deserve your time

As far as Ayreon goes, getting all these folks together at one time is logistically challenging to say the least, BUT…there HAVE been a few live performances. I think you’d really get a kick out of the live version of Everybody Dies. ☮️

I bought a Toerider CD after seeing Michael sing in this clip - I love his song Meet The Sloth - Ayreon is also responsible for me finding After Forever & Floor Jansen after buying one of his first concept albums
I believe the character of the android TH-1 is that it is independent of the AI Network and aids humanity to survive the onslaught of the central IA Network. I believe it joins the survivors on the spacecraft "Star Blade" in search of a new planet to inhabit.

In a similar vain Peter Hammills work 'The fall of the house of Usher' is a true rock opera that features: Peter Himself, Lene Lovich, Andy Bell of Erasure & Herbert Grönemeyer seriously could you get a more eclectic choir (there should be a better collective noun for 'rock' vocalists) in the room at the same time?
