About that story: The situation on planet Alpha is desperate. The President has given the 'Frame, the connected computers on Alpha, irreversible charte blanche to solve some environmental and ecological problems, and they concluded to terminate the population... Now extinction is imminent... But the Captain has built a spacecraft called "Starblade" (TH-1 mentions it here). In order to save some remnant of their race, a group of 10 Alphans (plus TH-1, who has a loyal unframed computer brain) embark on the Starblade.
After this (sung in Everybody dies) the exiles look ahead and face another problem: The new world 'Planet Y' they are heading for is far away and is 100% ocean, so the exiles must adapt. This is done by injection of a fluid called The Source or Liquid Eternity, for apart from the ability to breath water it also stops aging and thus allows for eternal life. Lateron the exiles from Alpha and their descendants will call themselves The Forever.
Remember: The Source is just one of many Opera-ish double albums with Arjen's music and storytelling. Like this one, all albums have an underlying story to which all the songs connect.
Apart from The Source there are 01011001 (yes that's the name), the Theory of Everything, the Human Equation and (with many live songs from the 2019 shows) Into the Electric Castle. And other projects such as Transitus.
I almost forgot, our Floor knows Arjen since her youth, she was with him in 2002 on his space metal tour on the road.

Ayreon is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is described as progressive rock, progressive metal and power metal sometimes combined with genres such as folk, electronica, experimental and classical music. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist.
Each Ayreon album tells a different story, but all, with the exceptions of Actual Fantasy, The Theory of Everything, and Transitus, take place in the same fictional, science fiction universe; additionally, Lucassen's solo album Lost in the New Real is also set in the Ayreon universe. Ayreon's music is characterized by the use of traditional instruments in rock music mixed with instruments more native to folk and classical music. Lucassen writes the music and the lyrics, sings and plays most of the instruments on all of the Ayreon albums, alongside many guest musicians. His most regular collaborator is drummer Ed Warby.

If you are finding the vocals are buried in the mix, you may need different headphones that drive the mids and uppers better, many headphone makers over drive the bass and lose the guitar and vocals, especially if they are for drum and bass or pop. This is setting the scene for the rest of the album and introducing the characters for what is really a rock opera.
the Guitars and Bass on the album are mainly played by Arjen Lucassen who wrote it, produced it performed parts of it. Live there are several ladies on stage, on other albums the cast has involved even more singers.

In 2019 they performed an whole album live and added some songs from other projects of Arjen at the end. I get what you say about it being hard to follow the lyrics. It is not easy to follow the story the first time. There are great lyric videos to all(?) albums on RUclips, wich are very helpful to follow along. I have seen some linked in other comments.
If you like live perfomances, there are two whole concerts available as playlists on RUclips. The Ayreon Universe show from 2017 and Electric Castle from 2019. The Universe show was the first concert in 22 years and is a "best of" show that gives a good overview and is a bit more guitar heavy. The Electric Castle is mostly one album, so one complete story, and more on the atmospheric / prog side.
Have fun exploring Arjen's work. There is a lot..
p.s.: Arjen is very friendly to reactors. If you run into copyright issues, just contact him. He might be busy in the coming month with preperations for the live show in September, though.

oh, and your lyrics comprehension lack might well be hearing involved. I have some issues in crowds or over the phone with voices in a certain range. add accents or long lyrical pronunciation and words get hard to pull out. Reading the lyrics or having them as captions helps, a lot for me. I hear rather well for as bad as I have tinnitus, but sorting out what's what is often impossible.

Fun reaction as usual, I appreciate your focus on the emotional impact of the music, and good point about the lack of female rep! Your problem with the vocal levels may be to do with the frequency response of your hearing - I almost always wish the bass guitar was higher in the mix, because I can rarely distinguish it properly and sometimes can't even hear it when reactors are saying "listen to that bass"! BTW I concur with the people suggestion _Everybody_ _Dies_ live as the next step down the Ayreon path, you'll see some familiar faces from this video and some new ones. (Arjen has other projects too, his Supersonic Revolution is a tribute to the glam music of the 70s.)

The cool thing about Ayreon is that all the albums sort of tie into the same story. 'The Source' (the album which this song is from) is technically the start of the story. It's about a race of humans that give control of their planet to a computer (the 'frame) to help solve an environmental catastrophe, but the computer determines that the best course of action is to eliminate the humans. Ten humans and the robot TH-1 escape the planet on the only interstellar ship they have (the 'Starblade') along with the ships crew and head to an ocean planet. The chemist creates a drug ('The Source', aka 'Liquid Eternity') that allows them to evolve into an 'aquatic race'. The drug also makes them basically immortal and allows them to communicate telepathically. The album ends with the survivors (ten plus the ships small crew) living on their new planet ('Planet Y') in relative peace, but in the final track we learn that TH-1 is becoming a new version of the 'frame deep in the ocean. The next album in the timeline, 01011001 ('Y') tells us how machines have now taken over this new planet, and the humans have basically merged with the machines are losing their emotions and sense of time. They now call themselves 'The Forever', since they are essentially ageless drones at this point. We also learn about how they seeded a comet with DNA and sent it to Earth, where it creates human life on our planet. The Forever believe they can live through us telepathically and that they may regain their emotions by doing so. Some of The Forever believe that we need to advance more quickly, and use their telepathy to give us medicine/technology, but this results in us advancing quicker than our morality can cope with. Eventually The Forever realize humanity is doomed and has to decide if they will give them the technology to reverse their past mistakes. Somewhere in the timeline sits the album 'The Electric Castle'From a summary by Arjen: "At the end of the journey those that successfully dealt with their personal demons find out that the voice belongs to an alien named 'Forever of the Stars', a member of an alien race living in a distant galaxy. These aliens created planet Earth and its people as an experiment so they could study, and hopefully one day experience emotions, as they themselves lost feelings eons ago." That's only three albums (less than half!) but I believe those three give you a solid foundation for how the story plays out. Also, I highly recommend any of the Electric Castle Live videos; They are just so fun to watch, plus John de Lancie ('Q' from Star Trek) plays the 'Forever of the Stars' character, which Arjen said he originally based on Q.
If you or other people with a curious mind want to be a tad impressed by two female vocalists battling it out in a song with some similarities in style and in a foreign language, look up 'Gåte ft. Djerv - Svarteboka' at some point.

About that thing you said about the volume of the instruments in relation to the vocals... well, you referred to the instruments as the "background music" to the vocals, but that is not always what it is. Although vocals usually carry the message in the lyrics, the instruments are as much as important, especially in this kind of genre. In pop music yes, maybe the vocals are really the center of everything, but in metal (and many other genres) that is not necessarily true. It's kind of fundamental that different genres have different philosophical and aesthetical approaches to the vocals in the context of the music, rather than it being simply a "problem with the speakers" or a "mix issue".
BTW, if you want more female voices you should check out some live shows by Ayreon, like Everybody Dies, or especially Valley of the Queens ;)

I didn't mean to devalue the instrumentals either, and I'm sorry if it came across that way. Music doesn't need words to have meaning. That's one of the things that makes it so absolutely miraculous. You don't need words for the music to make you feel
My main point, all I was trying to say, was that if there are lyrics, they should be purposeful, and I want to be able to hear them clearly, because I assume they mean something.

If you love Nightwish and Epica I bet you'll love Lovebites out of Japan all female metal band I chose a song with the lyrics for you even though they sing all their songs in English it will help with her thick accent decipher what she's singing. The 2 Lead Guitarists going back and forth can match any guy out there they are amazing- Asami was singing R&B before learning power metal. Midori (Blonde Shredder) also just took 2nd place for a body building competition. and Miyako the Ice Queen not only plays guitar but her main instrument is Piano she's classically trained if you react to Swan Song with Chopin Intro you will see her play both piano and guitar. this song Holy War live from Ride for Vengeance from 2021 the last concert with founding memeber and bassist Miho who left in August of 2021. New Bassist Fami can be heard on the videos Judgement Day and Stand and Deliver (Shoot 'Em Down) from the new album or the live song just released a day ago of their song Hammer of Wrath from Heavens Gate we are the ressurrection. In 2018 this band won the Metal Hammer Golden God award for best new band and award previously won by groups like Anthrax and Avenged Sevenfold. Lyrics are secondary in songs, that's why it's called MUSIC not lyrics. The band Tool deliberately record their albums with the vocal in the "back" because the music is most important to them, Maynard even stands in back to the side of Daney on the drums most of the live shows. If you are into lyrics only then might I suggest Country or Pop where the so called music is just accompaniment only with so-so musicians playing, prog-rock is for musicians to love. Vocals are awesome in music as an instrument (vocal cords) but when you start listening to the lyrics and analyze the meaning and story line you essentially give up on hearing the magic in the music, imo naturally 😊.

Not necessarily. Most of the time I can't understand what they sing until I have read the lyrics. Regardless of the language. Of course, the noisier the music, the harder it gets.

One advice I can give to reaction music is to enjoy the music by listening to the albums in their entirety, off camera, especially in Progressive music and especially those by Ayreon where the records are works that deal with a story; listening to react you lose many details and nuances.

I find it hard to believe that you couldn't understand the lyrics as I am an an Englishman and understood every word the first time I saw/heard this but then I was actually concentrating on the performance and not trying to think of comments. I can only assume that you are a singer as you complained about the level of the vocals which to an ex singer are perfect. Only a singer expects to be louder than everyone else even other singers !! LOL.

The binary code says trust th1. Th1 is the android played by Michael mills. He is the hero in this story, but later (or rather previously as this is a prequel in the story line) becomes the bad guy.

Without trying to sound mean but .. this song to me just seems like a waste to introduce to reactors if they are new to metal. They won't know the singers, or appriciate the effort of the collaboration and the genius of putting each singer into a certain role, or even understand why said singers are in said roles to fit into the Ayreon-verse.
