Looking at the game Wesley Walker had, it’s obvious Mike Haynes was the missing piece the Raiders needed. Haynes likely would’ve covered him this game.
Thanks for the memories on this FJR! Remember watching this game in a dorm room at Arizona State all hungover from the night before with (2) girls from Jersey . . .Ugh . .Hated hearing the chirping by them after the game was over . .
Jets upset the Bengals & Raiders only to lose in heartbreaking fashion in Miami in the Championship game. Richard Todd decided to throw the ball to AJ Duhe 3 times for interceptions.
Stock Market Guru Oh I still do. And Dolphin owner Joe Robbie. He was quick to bitch & moan about the Patriots earlier that yr about the snow plow incident game. But when monsoon rains hit Miami for 2 days before that AFC Championship game they didn't cover the field causing that mud pit that was atrocious.
That's why he was a Raider. Speed was the key ingredient for the Raiders. Unfortunately, many of the burners weren't particularly adept at running routes or catching the ball or creating separation or playing consistently. But the Raiders have a long line of fast receivers nonetheless - Gault, Jett, Branch, Brown, Barnwell, Muhammad, Moss, Crabtree, Heyward-Bey, Fernandez, Williams, Barksdale, Wright, Wells and Hester to name a few.
That opening hit on Todd Christensen would get you jail time today. With all the organization had going in in 1982, it's a wonder the Raiders were as good as they were. Practicing right outside of Oakland, then commuting to L.A. for home games. Like Howie Long said.... "disfunction was just normal function for us"
I am a lifer Cowboys fan (since age 3, 1976) I do not care who you root for, if you grew up a football fan, no matter the team, in the 60's to when free agency started and truly began to kill football....if you grew watching football from the 60 to the mid 90's you were very fortunate. The brand of football played during those decades will never be played again and we were all fortunate to watch it. I have a MASSIVE Cowboys video library but I have some games and films of other team as well and I can tell you...OMG compared to today or the past 15 years...OMG, football has become such a garbage product. I understand about player safety and God Bless, God Love all of the players who played from the 1950's onward to late 90's...but the game has changed so much. For me Free Agency the most and dumb ass fantasy football has killed the sport in so many ways. Back in the day I could watch football ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT. Now? All I must see is my Cowboys game and that is about it. SO many rivalries about been destroyed with so much player movement. Now in terms of this game, first look at the last scene of Alzado and Gastineau....OMG you want to talk about crazy people.....? LOL. My favorite running back, and forever will be is Tony Dorsett. That being said, people REALLY do not know just how great Freeman McNeil truly was. The running back during this time period were amazing. I'm 28 and someone of my generations got into an argument when I was going on a spiel romanticizing the old era of the 60s and 70s. I frequently go back and watch the NFL films of those eras with the This Week In Pro Football series hosted by Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier and the AFL ones done by Charlie Jones. I can't get enough of it. NFL today is fake, soulless corporate football and it's easy to see clear as day. Can't wait for the XFL to come back in 2022 though. At least that has an element of rawness that has been gone from the NFL for about 3 decades now.
My question is for any old school Jets fan watching this. I know your team just drafted a young QB but would I be right thinking that the past 15 years since the really sad injury to Pennington, the Jets would have killed just to have a QB the caliber of Richard Todd. My question, in Jets history for Jets fans, with the agreement that Namath was the BEST on Jets history, who would be in the list of top 5 Jets QB''s of all time?
One would need to go with the following QBs: Browning Nagle, Dick Wood, Bryce Petty, J.J. Jones and Bill Demory. Either those five or Joe Namath, Ken O'Brien, Chad Pennington, Vinny Testaverde and Richard Todd. Most fans can agree on Namath, O'Brien, Pennington and Testaverde. The 5th choice could be Esiason, Todd, Favre, etc.
This team was so ripe to win a SB. But we had the worst luck either with the Mud bowl or just some sort of self implosion like the Gastineau penalties giving Clev the game, the list goes on.
