- Okay look, Choctopus has made some great guides for Smash Ultimate - but we gotta talk about this Donkey Kong one. I don't blame him since this guide was made near the launch of the game, but on today's Monke Monday we need the PRIME APE (me) to check this out and tell you what's really up.

@@puddingmaster444 I was talking about his “art of guides” not his “how to” ones since I haven’t seen any before now. Still, he talks about other things in it like recovery mixups, optimal combos, and neutral. It still teaches u how to play the character even if it’s structured differently.

This... this was a pretty rough guide to watch. Almost none of what he says is true, which is only partially due to age.
Also, I always called it ledge trapping (2-framing, and punishing get up options), and edge guarding (actually going off stage).

choctopus stopped making guides cuz he knew he was too casual to be providing expert gameplay. this was also the first year of ultimate. he found his stride and niche with amiibos and just casual item play

Choc isn’t a competitive guy but he’s cool
This specific one was kinda bad, but his guides are overall great for beginners to understand how the game works
They're great for beginners to understand movesets. They're terrible for understanding the game as a whole. One of the single most important things in smash is knowing your characters combo moves, and this dude is just straight up lying saying that you can do up tilt jab and dash attack fair while not mentioning a single real combo like dash attack bair or cargo up throw up air. If this were just a moveset breakdown I'd have less of a problem with him not mentioning combos, but the fact that he chose to and then straight up lied is really really stupid.

It’s the year 20DK, guides and tutorials no longer exist due to all the ridicule and toxicity caused by a certain ZSS player. DLC is a thing of the past, no one can pick up a new character without the help of online guides. The SSBU meta began to regress. All top players now solo main Zelda and the A buttons no longer exist...

Let me try doing it better than choctopus:
-Spam aerial b-reversed down b, follow up with grabs, up air or up smash
-Go for grabs (especially pivot grabs or grab out of shield) cargo throw up air them or skill check them
-use dash into back air and back air a lot in general
That’s it, now you can play the monke and participate in elitesmash

Yo Mars there was a match in Japan where the DK player Hikaru went Roy to counter pick Zackray’s ROB, then Zackray went Joker and Hikaru had a close game and swapped off Roy to DK which IMHO he threw the game away with that decision. Would love to see your input on the match.

OK I’m on a phone and I’m just getting confused it was a Japanese tournament on the East Geek Smash channel called Winner! #1 and they just put up the video today of Zackray vs Hikaru but if you watch the livestream the timestamp for when Hikaru swaps to DK is 3:42:57 which is when IMO he threw the game away.

Fun, I love these types of videos
I used to think Choctopus was smart
But then I learned how to be good
Honestly think Choctopus' guides are aimed at a more casual audience who's maybe new to the game and just want to check out what each character is about. Yeah, it might not hold up to the competitive standard but literally making a video calling it the "worst guide I've ever seen" is kinda harsh imo, especially when you consider Choc's video is WAY more accessible to those who just play smash as a fun party game.

We're seeing a disagreement on the definition of a combo. What the guide is calling a combo technically iiiiiiiis a combo, they're just not true. So they might work at low level, but won't at high level.
