Datach Joint ROM System retrospective: Barf-code battler | NES Works Gaiden

  • By patron request, this week's video shifts up the temporal alignment of the NES Works Gaiden series to leap forward from the end of 1984 for Famicom to the end of 1992?! Yes, that's right, we spring forward in time here to look at the Japanese equivalent of the Aladdin Deck Enhancer, except one reliant on an even bigger gimmick than simply packing in universal game chips in order to accept smaller, less expensive sub-cartridges. Bandai dared to push the bleeding edge of what the market would bear here by forcing players to make use of collector cards emblazoned with bar codes in order to be able to play their video game at all. It's a bold innovation! And a terrible one! Learn all about it here.
    Video Works is funded via Patreon ( / gamespite ) - support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its RUclips debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more!

    A few years back a friend of mine scanned the barcode of her supermarket own-brand rice pudding, and the scanner told her it was...Mickey Mouse's Castle of Illusion for the Master System.
    Sadly, when we later scanned the barcode for a copy of Mickey Mouse's Castle of Illusion, it didn't register as Tesco Rice Pudding.

    I had a Barcode Battler. It was an OK product as far as handheld LCD games went.
    Basically a numbers only JRPG style turn based Battle. The game modes were 2 player, adventure,and the final battle mode which required the "boss cards" and (if you wanted any hope of winning) a pass code you earned from playing the adventure mode (which also acted as a progress save)
    You scaned in a character (or two in adventure) and item(s) cards which boosted various stats and could have attributes like single use, effect enemy, etc. It was fun but the only annoying thing was spells were represented by numbers so it be trial and error if you lost the manual.

    Wonder if bar codes on gaming will ever make a return. They always seem to be a flash in the pan that just become a headache to collect later.

    • @ValkyrieTiara
      @ValkyrieTiara 3 года назад +1

      I don't see why they would. The point of them was that bar codes were a convenient way to input new data into a game in a time when storage was at a premium. But even at the time the amount of data was miniscule; a VERY long barcode could MAYBE get you 10 or 20 bytes of data. And we live in a world now where storage is cheap and everything is connected to the internet; why swipe a bunch of cards when you can just tap a button and download whatever you're looking for?
      I would say maybe QR codes, but they share another problem with barcodes which is ALSO exacerbated by modern tech, and that is that they can be easily shared. Why sell something that can be printed out and swiped for free or even just scanned directly from a computer monitor when you can just have the purchase directly in-app?
      Yeah, nah, those days are over. They were flash in the pan because even at the time that's all they could really ever be. The only viable evolutionary line of that kind of product probably reached it's final form with Amiibos/Skylanders/Disney Infinity. You buy a toy and as a purchase incentive the toy itself unlocks something for you in another product. Just watch out for the day when they start selling those as blind boxes...

    I am surprised to see that two companies in different regions came up with the idea to put the re-usable cartridge parts in a peripheral to offer cheaper games and that both of them didn't release such an idea until AFTER the SNES had come out when it was clear the NES/Famicom was on the way out. Maybe that wasn't so obvious at the time? In Japan this was essentially the first transition to a new console generation and in America the pre-NES generation ended in the crash so we had never had a smooth transition from a market leading console to its successor. Did these companies think the older system would just continue to have support indefinitely? As a kid at the time the attitude was that the NES was old hat the second the SNES came out and we didn't need any prior console generation patterns to base that on. I wonder if that concept would have worked out better for a product that came out around 1988 or so when the NES was still current.

    Had a similar experience with clueless longplays when I was trying to look at different versions of Tower of Druaga. So many of the longplays just rush for the keys and doors, never finding any of the hidden items you're supposed to find.
    Which is especially painful because the second hidden item increases the player's speed to a point of relative playability. So you need get to see the game played at its proper speed in those videos.

    me wrt bandai when anything else is involved: i don't care for bandai
    I will add this, the Mega Drive Doraemon game seems to have had no involvement from Epoch, likewise with Meikyuu Daisakusen (known to Americans as Cratermaze) and Dorabian Night. Ironically enough Cratermaze and Gozansu (the Mega Drive game) are far better than at least the first Doraemon SNES game, which is the only one I played. Along with the SNES treatments of Legend of Heroes I & II and Dragon Slayer 1 GB, I've grown to distrust anything Epoch is involved with, not out of spite, but like how a poisonous animal has garish colors to defend itself from predators.
