    Hi! I'm in grad school right now doing my MM in viola performance and watching this video made me so nostalgic for undergrad! Cherish the music school moments because being a music major is HARD work, but so rewarding. If you're considering transferring, I'd say to listen to yourself, and what you feel is best for yourself! I considered transferring to a different grad school but I ultimately decided against it because it's only a two year program, but I definitely feel stuck. Love your content and if you ever need any music/school advice, feel free to reach out! 😊💕

      Elizabeth you are so kind! Yes I need to make the most of this experience because I only get 4-6 years of college to prepare for the rest of my life. And I appreciate the offer for advice! I'll definitely be sure to hit you up if I need anything :)

    I really enjoyed your video! It inspired me to seek out better lesson books. My main problem is in positions (because my teacher I had for 2 years didn't want to do it for whatever reason. I'm repeating the first one over and over, actually, because I sometimes don't do the tiring exercises. I usually play until I'm tired but need to play more. I have a log of my practice, on a spreadsheet on the computer.) So, that's neat I get to know from this video and a past that you do these exercises. I just auditioned to go back to and change my instrument at Loyola University New Orleans from piano to violin. I played violin for 6 years but didn't practice as much as I wanted. I had to do double stop scales, but they didn't tell me about it, like where to get material, when I asked. I like what you're doing. I would probably change to Vanderbilt. Life is not really but they say short, and so can seem education for some. You had your experience here. It's time to move on, unless it's too stressful, overall, which I don't know why. Loyola was my best option for music. I also got in Tulane? Rhodes not advanced in music, as they do beginners and probably don't offer a BM. Tulande also just offers a BA. I was thinking of UF for money reasons and if I don't get what I want.

    Hi Julia, for music performance majors do you have to know how to play an instrument to major in that field?

    • @JuliaJacobsen
      @JuliaJacobsen  3 года назад +1

      Hello Helen :) Yes. Most conservatories and schools of music at universities expect that their students have been playing their instrument for multiple years and play at an advanced level. Unfortunately, it is one of the only college majors that requires you to have prior experience. However, there may be programs/teachers at select schools that are open to teaching adult beginners. I wish music was more accessible to beginners in college, it's one of my life goals to make it more accessible for everyone!

      @@JuliaJacobsen I also know I will face community service needs in music and wish more people would play music who didn't get to for whatever reason or extenuating circumstance or trouble..

    I am in my second year as a music major. I play percussion. I have had piano classes for the last three semesters in a row. Now, I am in my second semester of sophomore year with a challenging semester of all. I have a barrier exam this time which is a challenge. How did you handle pressure of barriers?

    • @JuliaJacobsen
      @JuliaJacobsen  2 года назад

      With barrier exams, I honestly just trust the process, prepare a lot so that I can be confident in my playing, and remember that the evaluators/professors want me to do well. If you have been working hard throughout the semester up until that point, the committee will already recognize your improvement and give you a good score. Hope this helps!
