It never gets old! It never gets old. No matter what form of media it's got adapted, no matter from which era, no matter how bad D'Artagnan's name was pronounced, the adventures of the Three Musketeers will always be my all time favorite classic.

Yes, I know all that. But early in every story D shows up and joins and throughout MOST of the story (whatever version or at least every version I’ve come across) It’s abt the 4 of them.
Look at the show FRIENDS. Chandler met Ross in college. And Joey & Phoebe didn’t come along til they were adults and needed roommates. And Rachel left and came back. We still say they were 6. Not 4 or 5 but 6 bc that’s the story that’s told. Just like the story we’re told is abt 4 Musketeers

@ebenezer4107 ha! Just how many books of the Three Musketeers series have you read?
Dumas was prolific, but most of his work is justly forgotten. The Man in the Iron Mask bites, including what happened to D'Artagnon - and I didn't even like him!
Go read your sucky tragedies. I, for one, have to give credit to Hollywood on the extremely rare occasions they manage to tell a story that's better than the book, and this is definitely one of them, despite the fact that Hollywood is so illiterate they only have seen the movies that came before, may not know the book exists, and have not a clue about either history or geography.
Yeah. That's how awful that book is, and I am a reader.
For the record, I read all 5 of the Three Musketeers series, complete and unabridged. Go bite yourself.

@@bforman1300 I read the musketeers trilogy, I read The count of Monte Cristo, I read Queen margot, La Dame de Monsoreau. France will adapt the musketeers trilogy, the count of monte Cristo and other books.
The film, if it were isolated, would be bad because it is totally inaccurate historically.
But it is inferior to the book.
Cardinal Rochelieu ruled poorly for many years and was a powerful minister. The film ignored the Siege in la Rochelle and the war between Catholics and Protestants.
A film that ignored historical events and altered French history is already wrong.
The 1998 film The Man in the Iron Mask did not understand the historical period very well. The opera Phaeton by Jean-Baptiste Lully best represents the era. Philippe Quinault wrote the French libretto after a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses. It can be read as an allegorical depiction of the punishment awaiting those mortals who dare to raise themselves as high as the "sun" (i.e. the Sun King).
the musketeers were no match for the Sun King and were eventually defeated and killed.
The common public is not used to reading classics of literature such as war and peace by Tolstoy, The Brothers karamazov by Dostoevsky, As metamorphoses by Ovid, Hamlet by Shakespeare, Madame Bovary by Fleubert and that's why when there is that need for shallow stories with endings escapists.

@ebenezer4107 hahahahaha! Trilogy? There are 5 books in the Three Musketeers series. Surely you found Twenty Years After. Bet the ones you missed were The Vicomte de Bragelonne and Louise de Villiers. And obviously you found the dreadfully depressing Man in the Iron Mask.
The 1998 Man in the Iron Mask wasn't trying to be historically accurate. (duh! It's Hollywood!) They were just trying to tell an entertaining story and succeeded far beyond the misery that is the book.
And no adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo will ever do justice to the complete and unabridged version of the book. That was definitely Dumas' masterpiece.

It is a terrible remake. The 70's version with Oliver Reed, Michael York, Christopher Lee, Faye Dunaway, Raquel Welch and Charlton Heston is a million times better.
