- Why is it that we read so many jazz books, learn so much music theory and yet we can't play those ideas? It's because our practice routine is broken, and in this video we will break free of that plateau.

Great video! I agree there’s so many videos out there teaching new concepts- enough to last a lifetime. But no one talks about HOW to learn them. This was great stuff. Thanks Josh!
I have fallen in to that trap. Knowledge alone is not enough to mastering this beautiful art form. It is time for me to go back a few chapters and start conquering some of these concepts. Thank you for the reminder.
Great insights!
Josh, thanks so much for this. What a great video. I especially love the point about symmetry in the open voicings.
The trap of novelty-guilty as charged. Except I call it shiny object syndrome.
Your approach makes total sense. I’ve done this-but have never gone far enough back to find my real weak spot.
Thanks.
Great explanation of how to get from Heart to Head to Hand(s) and good to think about drilling down to the appropriate level for what you are practising. The difference between "until you get it right" vs "until you can't get it wrong" 🙂. I find another good tip is to listen out for the cries of despair from others in the household... "not that scale/lick/exercise again!".. the trick then is to do the same but disguise it with another rhythm/pitch/register/dynamic (or reach for the headphones!)
Thanks for the tip, I am working on it. I have been playing chord shells for years but stand alone and not in context of a real song !
We did it over Blue Bossa in our workshop today. Was a great one to work on. Highly recommend.
@JoshWalshMusic very cool, I have a version on my set list, I'll check it out.
@@kitgroovemachine cool man. Come join our workshop on Zoom on Fridays. Https://jazz-library.com/workshop. We’re doing this right now. 👍
@@JoshWalshMusic thanks, I signed up !
Love it. Great way to build on intervals in chord voicings in a physically useful and fundamental way. Thanks for breaking it down.
Except I'm confused at G being in Fm7, time 4:35
The chord voicing is 3/7 in LH and 9/5 in the RH. G is the 9th of Fm.
Glad to have you here!
@@JoshWalshMusic Ah, I missed it was a ninth chord. Thought it was Fm7. Thanks!
Another great vid! 🎉 Always spot on and super constructive! Sorry to say, I can’t make tomorrow’s workshop but looking forward to the next.
This is pedagogy, style of teaching; I see a breakout in my stalled learning curve!
The most problem for me was the question what to practice even when I had most part of theory in my head. Knowing chords and scales theoretically for me it doesnt give an ability to play jazz improvisation.
I'm not bored yet! 😉😁🎹😎
Josh I get bored before I've even gotten half of it! - Dina from pwj.
Great
Please change the video title. The world is too negative right now. Jazz is my refuge.
I’ve been rethinking it actually. What would you suggest?
Unfortunately the negative titles get 3x more clicks. I don’t like it either. Really open to suggestions.
