This is one of the first kung fu movies i ever saw. After having seen a couple hundreds later, this one is still a masterwork in interesting characters and dialog acting. I think this is Meng Fei best acting performance. He has just the right balance between candid, playfulness and trickiness. In later movies he overdoes it and becomes too much of a smart ass, but it depends on the director too. After one has seen hundreds of movies its the characters and dialogs that really matters. The fighting is only an interlude. Here Meng Fei does a very convincing snake style kung fu, that i have not seen matched by anywhere else.

Description sets up the main focus of the movie. Helpful hints if wanted are: Hung Kun Shan is (Yu Tien Lung). Hun Kuei is (Tung Li). That 3rd member of the group explained to the monk is Tien Yi Fei. Hung orders that Hun Kuei be killed to his men. His 2 main fighters are Ting Shan and Tieh Kung Liang (Tan Tao Liang). (Wu Ma) is that pickpocket. Hung wants the name list along with that book. Tsui Haun is girl in blue. Movie is full of fighting, rescuing, servitude, and story line. 110 minute mark Er Lang (Meng Fei) and Tieh (Tan) fight again. Tsui Haun is now in lime outfit not blue. Tieh & Er Lang fight Hung Kun Shan. 2 masters have a go at it next. Tieh & Er Lang practice to fight better. Now for 2nd time the Sedan chair with Hung & his men is attacked by the Sun Moon Association led by Hun Kuei (Tung Li). Last great fights include a 1 on 1, 2 on 1, followed by a surprise fighter joining in. Obviously this is an outstanding movie with great stars and even more than mentioned (Fang Fang) in violet outfit. NOTE: Wu Tang Collection offers this same movie, same title in SUBTITLES & ORIGINAL LANGUAGE for those that prefer that watching method. This comment was made by watching that version of the movie.

Some great fighting in this one...good costumes and sets, too, which is something you don't often see in independently-produced kung fu films of this period.
For the reasons you listed and also a lot of very good acting by many actors in this movie (not the least all the vilains) i consider this the most well rounded kung fu movie. There is plenty of mystery and every scene is electric with profound characters even the music still sounded fresh before it got overused in other movies.

Tan Tao Liang (aka Dorian Tan) was originally trained in Tae Kwon Do rather than Kung Fu, which explains his distinctive syle. Man, those kicks! - They're beautiful!

@@ericastier1646 his looks and character feel were nice but i am talking about the actors actual skill of the person playin him,i not know if is heavily a matter of choreography,but i expected a lot more from an end fight also it was poorly cut and the moves were not that cool in general,i did like the way they managed to kill him though.And yes i also have watched countless movies for more than 30 years maybe after 10 years more you might agree a bit more with me :) Be safe.
@@Realmasterorder Haha, actually i've been watching kf vintage movies for over 20 years, probably seen 800-1000 of them, many more than one time. So i think i am a connaisseur. I think his acting skills during dialogs are phenomenal, even mystical. It's not easy to do. If you don't see that, i will not agree. About end fight choreography, ok but it is very difficult to direct three star actors (especially Meng Fei). Actually if you rewatch that fight, two against one action at short bits are extremely good and complex but only last 2-3 seconds, mixed with more imagined fancy action like comic books. Usually a director will show one hero getting hurt early in the fight, to avoid 3 people fighting at the same time which is very difficult to learn and synchronize for the actors. I agree that the final blow is not convincing. Maybe also the vilain should have gotten his clothes more teared up and he should have looked more at the end of his rope, maybe he should have pulled out some trick weapon to spice things up. Yes, but that's not the actor's fault, it's the director and choregraphor.
I am 42 years old I have a collection of over 1,500 kung fu movies this is like the most memorable movie villains not just Kung-Fu villain I just think his presence is very ominous he has a cool look he's very acrobatic he moves well his flips the way he gets up his speed just he has this very arrogant feel to him how he's Elusive and they kind of build up the invincibility of his finger Fist and how masterful it is and how he's been elevated to the position because of how good he is at Kung Fu and his ambition makes him this evil person who will do anything to succeed but they just do a good job and his connection to the characters you know his blood-brother and then you have the two kids that watch their brother get murdered and they want revenge and they have more than one fight within and they're trying to figure it out it works it works very well I don't know what you're talkin about
I'm after an old classic where the old guy with the white hair is fighting a couple of guys outside and he does this crazy power up type move and becomes super strong breaking trees with his forearms and has a crazy grip, only ever saw it on video, just the look on his face when he powers up is priceless, all I remember is he had on a red outfit with white sleeves and the final fight was outside in the daytime lol
