It's awesome to see so many people from America who celebrate their Scottish and Irish ancestry so keenly, and come on to RUclips to seek out people celebrating these cultural nuances. You only have to look at the success of the Try channel, Facts channel, Joel & Lia and Diane Jennings to see how people love seeing Irish and British People trying American things for example.
I feel sad that, for our part, so few in Scotland celebrate this amazing connection between Scotland and America, and I want to change that. So to start, here are 10 of my first impressions of America, and then i'll go on to talk about other aspects of us culture from a Scottish perspective.

I’m a Texas, and I’ve never had a single bad meal in New Orleans. It’s a food Mecca.
I'm a Texan too. San Antonio.
Houston Food here!
Ditto Dreamweaver. Houstonians go East a lot, and for the life of me, cannot get a bad meal in Louisiana. The seeder the cafe looks, the better the food taste. I Gaw Un Tee! Love the little ones on the highways right before and after the cities, and the ones in the small cities....so good!
NOLA food is about as close to heaven as we can hope to get.

Now that you have tried Creole food you should try Cajun food... the other Louisiana cuisine!
Bruce Shook do excited to do this 😊
Fried gator poppers and a shrimp po boy.
Cajun food is my jam
Home cooked cajun food. Someones grandmaw needs to cook for you lol. This creole food is more the high class stuff here. Come down here and ill make you some gumbo. They should have made yall some bread pudding. I make a pretty good one but its something you cant fuck up really.
No doubt about dat! 🤗
COMMANDER'S PALACE!!! Dude, you are experiencing the BEST of New Orleans cuisine from Commander's Palace. I grew up in New Orleans and I'm so jealous!! Brennan's is outstanding as well!!! Consider yourself truly blessed!
Yeah - one of the best eating places in NOLA

I'm a Northeast retired chef. There's no cuisine better than New Orleans' in the US. Creole and Cajun are the best of life.

That's right
No, SC Lowcountry cuisine is the best!

I don't know if you have heard this American expression but 'you clean up nicely' meaning you look quite nice in your suit! Glad you tried Creole cuisine.
Laura Ellen haha thanks Laura 😊
Very classy print to the shirt! My grandmother would have said "you are very presentable." (About as warm as she ever got.)
Yes, yes he does😉
or the phrase "someone put they foot in it"
Thank you for opening the eyes of so many people who think America is only fast food. We have some of the best restaurants in the city, state and even the world. Plus with all the different regions there is a large variety of cuisine’s in our nation.
Yes!! I get so irritated when people think that American food is hamburgers and chicken nuggets and all the stuff you get from McDonalds or Burger King. There is so much great regional cooking. Thanks to Shaun for putting the spotlight on one of the regional cuisines of the US, creole food of southern Louisiana.
That is whites food lmao

Growing up Creole this video speaks to my soul! Laissez les bons temps rouler!
I’m so excited to visit you guys and really learn the culture. Thank you 😊
We are lucky to have so many great choices of foods thanks to all the diversity of people living in the US. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Well, I'm jealous. Tory MacPhail is amazing, and Commander's Palace is legendary!
Thanks, I’m really excited to go there !!!
Oh dear. Ten minutes into this video, I was already salivating.

Really Shaun, how dare you have a Scottish accent! LOL, don't worry - the rest of America doesn't pronounce New Orleans the way people from New Orleans pronounce New Orleans.
Nawlins
Watching this video makes me want to return to New Orleans. There’s no place in the world quite like it.

Thank you Shaun!
The ‘Commander’s Palace’ is indeed an iconic NOLA restaurant. Your interview of Exec. Chef Tory McPhail was fabulous! He’s a culinary rockstar w/deep ingredient knowledge & creative menu mastery. The bead pudding sounds divine!
Thank you - I’m really excited to go there and try some amazing local foods
Dad had some Cajun friends. He asked them if the nutria were causing much problem near there home area. They said no, they are fairly easy to hit with a rifle and cook up jus' fine... :)
Oh!!! Nutra rat? It's good! I like nutra, duck, rabbit, hog, and squirrel. If you hunt them and clean them correctly. A real good duck and okra gumbo sounds good
My sis-in-law is half Cajun, (yes with a grandmaw - wish I could’ve met all her amazing-sounding grandfolks) and she has another name for her family ‘n people, but maybe not so polite for me to say on YT 😉. (‘specially coming from me.) Anyway she survived a bit on Nutria as a kid, not to mention living with the guard alligator in the ditch outside the house. We’re in CA, about half as far from Louisiana as Scotland is, but still pretty darn far I think... The US is large! Only tried some of the home cooking, crab boil, crawfish, etc, not the same here I’m told, but all pretty awesome.
I've not yet tried nutria, but I drove through the Atchafalaya River basin once while they were in breeding season and the road was a horror show of dead ones. Think apocalyptic. Hundreds and hundreds of them in the broiling sun and humidity. The smell was unspeakable. Not sure if I can shake the visuals and that stench long enough to try to eat one. 😳✌️
@@lcflngn LOL did you mean "coonass"?
Starting in the 70s 'coonass' became quite fashionable in south Louisiana.
I was born in Cajun country and one of my mother's family in New Orleans once referred to me as a coonass. I was about 7, and thoroughly insulted.
All sorts of people claim to be Cajun these days, who aren't, but it is true that the Cajun people were very poor and lived a subsistence life off the bounty of the land. Strong, creative people can take nearly anything and make good food out of it.
gmf nyb Yes on every count. Def don’t want to insult anyone! 😉
One of Louis Armstrong's big hits was "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?" - if Louis Armstrong made "means" and "Orleans" rhyme, he must have been correct. :)
Just wanted to say, you were very polite to not laugh at the chef when he said his was the oldest restaurant in the US at 120 years old... not sure I could have resisted a laugh, and I’m American! You’re a good guy, Shaun!
Louisiana represent!!!! Creole is good but I do prefer the Cajun spices and seafood. Great job

HI Shaun. I'm from northern Illinois, about 35 miles north of Chicago. I love New Orleans and the great food there. If you ever get the chance to go to New Orleans you won't be disappointed. The food and the city is amazing. Chicago is a great food town as well but New Orleans is unique.
New Orleans is definitely worth a visit, it's a gorgeous city and has a true personality that's not like anywhere else. The food is amazing, it's a great place to party and have fun.
I've never heard anyone describe New Orleans as "gorgeous" lol.. and I'm a native New Orleanian. Some parts are nice, but overall it's a corrupt, crime-ridden dump that has great culture, amazing food, good people and is unique. I'm sure it's fun to visit, but living there has very strong good and bad points. Some of the good is really good, and some of the bad is really bad.
@@barnabydodd8956 I'm a big fan of the old houses and the necropolises. Some parts of the French Quarter really are gorgeous. As far as being a corrupt, crime-ridden dump, hey, I'm from Illinois. Felt like home. ;) Seriously though, I know it has problems like any city, having Chicago next door I'm well aware of the issues a big city can face. But it's one of the most unique places in the country I've visited, and I'm a sucker for the Creole food.
Barnaby Dodd Sometimes folks don’t appreciate what they have because you’re used to it. The rundown areas in NOLA are horrendous, but some of the architecture in the French Quarter, Garden District, and Marigny is magnificent! I’m from St. Louis, and we have the squalor, and some truly beautiful old neighborhoods, but not near as much as New Orleans. When you compare older cities with character and gracious architecture like New Orleans, Savannah, and Charleston, among others, to cookie-cutter newer “corporate” cities, I’m sure that you will realize what you have is truly gorgeous.
New Orleans!
Is one of my personal, top 5 cities in the USA ☀️💚😎
The food, the music, the people, the architecture, the history, the graveyards, the weather..in general, just the ambience of the city!
Love it! 😘
Hi Shaun! I’m from Louisiana, more specially Lafayette, which is about 2 hours from New Orleans. I’m Cajun, which is a culture as well as a people. My family loves to cook gumbo, etoufee, and crawfish. Bread pudding is amazing btw! If you ever come to Louisiana come to Lafayette as well as New Orleans!
Lafayette is a great town. I love St. Francisville too. Louisiana is so much more than just New Orleans.
Thomas Parker definitely!! I hope everyone gets to explore as much of it as they can!
I’m sooooo excited to go visit you all and eat - sounds amazing
Shaun You definitely should! :)
Shaun, Cajun cooking is absolutely the best there is. I'm Texan born and bred, but my bloodline is Cajun from south of Lafayette. Creole is good, but Cajun food is the best.
When you get to Louisiana, don't forget to go to the Southwest part of the state and experience Cajun food. It isn't the same as Creole food, but I am sure you will appreciate it. Make sure you bring a loose pair of slacks. Because you will stuff yourself.
I love living in New Orleans! I get excited to watch things about our city.
Angelina Giangrosso I really really want to visit soon. Have you ever been to Commander’s Palace?
Shaun I’ve never been, it’s a bit on the pricey side!! I’m bout the hole in the wall places. But it is legendary here. If you EVER come here I’ll be your guide! All the creepy shit ⚜️⚜️
I used to live in the Marigny neighborhood, where do you live?
I've been waiting for a youtuber from the uk to visit my favorite place in the US.
100% promise I will go there 🦞 😊 can’t wait
Commander's Palace the epitome of wonderful NOLA food and hospitality! Congrats!
I really enjoyed this video. Don't forget to try Memphis BBQ sometime too.
@Charlton Jones I'm from Paris, TN myself, but have a cousin in Memphis and he's taken me to a few places down there with absolute killer BBQ.
Shaun you look so dashing!!! Love your taste!
Louisiana Has the best food offerings in the States in my opinion. I think it must come from the strong French influence, and the French as well as the Cajuns can make damn near anything taste good. Hope you get to southern Louisiana one day...not just New Orleans...the whole area. Popular spots to eat commoner food in New Orleans include places like Mother's and the Acme Oyster Bar.
You want to know what Louisiana is like? Go sit in a sauna for a week
I am from Tennessee but have been to New Orleans a couple of times and have eaten at Brennan's, it was fantastic. Also, I heard the female chef say that they made a recipe with Jack Daniel and he was my 2nd great uncle. Enjoyed this video!
Now you need to come to New Orleans for a crawfish boil and snowballs! We would love to have you here. We are very spoiled here with fresh seafood. 🦀🦐
I live about an hour and 20 minutes from New Orleans. Some of the best food on the planet. But, yeah, there are areas downtown that can be dangerous - even during the day. Great thing is, though, you can find Creole cuisine just as great anywhere in the state. :)
Thomas Parker I’m really keen to visit ASAP
@@shaunvlog, you'll love it. Swing by the Mississippi Gulf Coast if you can - we have great beaches (when we're not fighting algae blooms like right now) and a great night-life too. (Oh, you're less-likely to get shot and our food is great too!)
Loved the video. I just got back from a weekend trip to New Orleans, ohhhhhhh the food down there. Seeing what you had made me want to plan another trip to The Big Easy. That is New Orleans nickname.
I'm from New Orleans Louisiana I'm a truck driver and I relocated to Sue falls South Dakota.. And the food is very different so when I Come home I cook for friends and family and everything is from scratch .. And of course our food takes hours and hours to cook a good pot of red beans takes about 5 the 7 hours plus soken overnight.. But my friends South Dakota love my Creole , Cajun and Southern cookin
New Orleans is on my bucket list only because of their food! So jealous of your chef experience.
Shara Goins I’m really really want to visit :)
Don't just go to NOLA...go to some of the outlying towns! Go north to Baton Rouge...or closer Gonzales, Louisiana...We are the Jambalaya Capital of the World! Festival is held at the end of May!
North Baton Rouge? Lol are you high?
Yes definitely come to New Orleans you may never want to leave though 😁
Commander's Palace. Same restaurant that Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagase were the Chef at in their own times. Been down that way a couple of times and personally, while I like both Creole and Cajun cooking, I think that I would give the nod to the Cajun style (but only just!).
Shaun, someone said down below--when you do come, get down into the bayous, if possible, where you meet the real Cajuns. Also, with the amazing food, there's Cajun music called zydeco (ZYE-duh-koh) that you can't, to my knowledge, find anywhere else.
Jim Green I heard a professor of music trace Zydeco from medieval French folk songs, relate them to Québécois folk songs, and trace the lineage to Cajun music and finally to Fats Domino, who recorded Zydeco in French patois in the 50’s before he released Blueberry Hill. American music is amazing the more you dig into the roots.
@@11thstalley96, wow, isn't that the truth! All the variations of country music, the beginnings of rock & roll, jazz, Cajun, drum corps arrangements, and maybe others I don't recall at present all started here. Folks overseas must thing all we do is sit around thinking about music.
N'awlins (New Orleans pronounced with a Southern drawl) is one of the most unique American cities, you should visit. But a word of warning, it is hotter and more humid than a Scotsman will enjoy much of the year, and as much fun as the various festivals are maybe for a first visit to try the food and experience the culture plan for a time between the bigger celebrations, definitely avoid Mardi Gras for a first visit.
Alabama girl here! I love creole food! We have crawfish/shrimp boils here. Gumbo is awesome. I love New Orleans and it’s cuisine! You must come for a visit along our gulf coast and head over to NOLA!
I first went to NO for the World's Fair in 1984. After a few hours, my exasperated wife asked, "Are you ever going to stop eating!?". I did after a few more stops.
im irish and from new orleans bro been watching u for awhile, good shit. the best food in country for sure. i know a dude who work at commanders palace.. i was just at his house last weekend
Cool. My cousin (Craig Hamilton) recently started working at the Commanders Palace.
Hey Shaun I recently got to trace my ancestry. Found my ancestors were Viking raiders who went from England to Edinburgh! Eventually they immigrated to Louisiana and I'm freaking ecstatic!
That’s so crazy how Commanders Palace is here and so am I with my family! Here til Saturday. Scotland is so amazing I am in Glasgow right now celebrating the Cunningham clan
Hey, are you related to Kieran Cunningham, the Kilted Climber?
Tanya B possibly but probably not. The Clan Cunningham is of my stepfathers side of the bloodline and I am a Courtney lol but I can for sure find out!
Great to see the cultural exchange through foods. Really glad to to see people reinforcing the fact that exported fast food is only a tiny part of what is eaten in the US.
Nice! Don't worry about your pronunciation of American cities - Americans don't pronounce names, words, etc., the same! Being a huge country, with diverse ethnic names, foods, and cultural practices. This was a good introduction to Louisiana & Creole foods. When you do visit Louisiana get out with the real Cajun people, see the dancing, the food, and all!
Yes in coastal Mississippi a street, river, or bayou might have a French , Spainish or Native American pronunciation, often within a block of each other.
Yeah I'm from California always pronounced it the way you did, but also know they pronounce it differently, but sometimes its worse to try to sound like a local
Absolutely some of the best food, in the World! Cajun and Creole, from Louisiana!
You can find great food everywhere in the United States.
Some the best food are found in small towns and States. You will have to find a true local and not a transplant.
In Los Angeles, the best food tends to be some hole-in-the-wall ethnic place in a strip mall deep in a random part of suburbia.
I may live in Georgia but I've been to New Orleans and Louisiana in general. Great food! Had my mouth watering watching this. Loved listening to the Chef. Smiled along with you when you got in the car. haha Thank you!
Our food here is truly amazing. If you ever get to Baton Rouge, bring your kilt !
If you do come to New Orleans, make sure that you stay in the French Quarters. So much fun, food and good drink. I once had a police officer chastise me because my glass was empty.
My husband is from Louisiana and we go there frequently... its my favorite food! Gumbo, Etouffee, beignets, chicory coffee!!! even their potato chips (Zapps), are the best!
Thank you so much for making the distinction between Creole and Cajun food. So many people that aren’t from LA or have ever been or maybe are just influenced by media say all food in Louisiana is Cajun. Creole and Cajun are two very distinct cooking styles and methods, although they share some similarities.
Shaun, even U.S. folks who’ve never been to New Orleans know about Commander’s Palace and Bananas Foster. Sooooooo delicious!
I love these videos, to watch your excitement and enjoy your impressions. How is it that you get to do these things? Are you famous in Edinburgh?
I’m supper happy that you got to try some food from my home state! It is a great place that is really underrated. Food is a big part of our culture, and we are always looking for a reason to eat. So. If you come down, be ready to gain a pound or too. I hope you get a chance to try some Cajun food one day. That is what I grew up on, and I can’t get enough of it.
Shaun I always go to the Commander's house just for the Crab corn chowder. It's the best thing they serve. But as for as true cajun or creole food you're only going to find that at the mom and pop stores. Best debris sandwiches in New Orleans is Mother's, best po boys Domillise. Willie Mae's Scotch house for the ABSOLUTE BEST FRIED CHICKEN IN THE WORLD. SERIOUSLY THE BEST EVER. Mandina has a little of everything and definitely off the beaten path...and of course last but not least Pat O'Brien's for a Hurricane. Best advice while visiting there stay away from the Tourist spots other than Cafe Du Monde now that's a Must....now really anywhere you go in the big easy is going to have the great food but seriously Willie Mae's can't be beaten
tracie rainey ahhhhh I’m so excited. I’ll need to ask you guys all exactly where to go when I visit
@@shaunvlog most definitely Shaun. Your experience in New Orleans should be an unbelievable and should hold memories for a lifetime. I usually stay two weeks just to soak it all in. Let me know when yall are planning on it. Baton Rouge is a must see.

I grew up on creole food. It is delicious if made correctly!
Ah yes, Creole and Cajun cuisine...absolutely delicious! If you get a chance, try some of the staples, gumbo, jambalaya, dirty rice and boudin rouge. (I lean toward the cajun) Nice video!

I’m a resident of New Orleans and a friend of The Chef, he’s a wonderful person and ambassador for the city, and the restaurant is truly a can’t miss destination. When you do come visit make it a long one and try to come between October and May, it’s quite hot in the summer and most of the fun activities happen during that time. That being said there is always fun to be had. If you need any guidance please don’t hesitate to ask me or the Chef. There are a lot of great things to see and do, and I know you won’t be disappointed.
I love how excited you get when you try new things. I have never been to Louisiana but I know the food is amazing. Being from the South I can say just about all the food in the South is amazing. I hope you get to visit sometime soon.

NEW Orleans in the last week in December for New Years Celebrations and it is extremely wild but good for a week or two visit.. MardiGras maybe great also but I have never been to that..
I didn't know there was such a thing as "culinary diplomacy" -- what a wonderful idea. So glad (and sort of jealous) you got to experience this!
I've been to New Orleans about 10 times, great city!
Easy pronunciation tip, "Nawlins" is phonetically how to say it and if you go to Nawlins you have to go during Mardi Gras :)
Nope more like "New Orlins". If you are local you know damn well we make fun of people who pronounce it "Nawlins", don't do that.
We stumbled into a few different holes in the wall in New Orleans, and the food was ALWAYS excellent. It didn't seem to matter where you ate, you were gonna get delicious food. Good times.

So glad you got to try some great Louisiana food! When you come down here you have to try crawfish!!! God bless!
Creole and cajun is AMAZING! Shaun, you have to visit New Orleans. It's a really unique place in the US. Creole tastes the best in small "dive" restaurants.
Anthony Bourdain did a show on Louisiana cooking some time back. It was at some guy's house out in the country. They butchered a hog and Bourdain was given the task of shooting the pig. It happens to be an honor if I'm not mistaken 👌
They processed the hog out in quick order and started cooking all kinds of stuff. That, to me, is what I feel is a typical Louisiana party. There was music as well, and a night-before pre-party to boot. There is protocol and etiquette involved but not sure what it would be (what to bring, how much, etc.). It looked like a great neighborhood kind of get together.
Anyway, I'd get in touch with Bourdain's producer and find out where he went, and try to go there 👍 those folks know how to have fun.
What you are describing is what we call a couchan de late (coo-shaun de lay). Pig roast. And yes it's a several day party.
@@monicasandifer3159 thank you for that. I'm pretty sure Mr. Bourdain stated that but it's been so darned long since I saw the episode that it'd escaped me lol
Again, thank you very much.
The food in Louisiana is just the cherry on top of what is a truly deliciously satisfying place to visit. I live in Houston TX, also known for its diversity of cultures which makes for great dining and entertainment. Thank you for sharing your experiences with America. There is so much negativity about our country out there. It's nice to see someone who isn't from here having a positive experience and hear that they are seeing, tasting, and enjoying the country I love. ❤️🇺🇸
I love that you have had this New Orleans experience in your country. I live on the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain which is north of New Orleans. I've traveled in a few European countries and Ireland. I loved everything I've eaten in those countries but I am partial to our own cuisine. It's in the blood, I guess!
I am coming to your beautiful city at the end of October. Do you have any suggestions for me as to where we should eat? I'd love to get your suggestions for a wonderful yet authentic dining experience. I also hope you will come meet our fair city. She is truly one of a kind!!
New Orleans (Nawlens, correct pronunciation) is my home away from home. Commander's Palace is definitely THE brunch place. Don't miss the beignets at Cafe Du Monde with chicory coffee, then on to the French Quarter to drink.
Love Cafe Du Monde
If your first exposure to Creole is from the folks who do Commanders Palace, you've done very, very well. That place is a transcendent joy. Now go to New Orleans and seek out a bit more variety; you'll be shocked at how many wonderful dishes you'll find in places both grand and humble.
Commanders Palace is a fine restaurant with amazing food - but you need deep pockets! There are so many small, local places that have wonderful food all over NO! You have to come! Laissez les bon temps rouler!
There is so so much great New Orleans food for every time of the day and night. You will have to go every year like we do to just experience a slice of what they have to offer. Plus the music is heaven!!
Excellent blog! Love watching people outside the USA experience our amazingly diverse cultures. So glad you enjoyed that incredible meal ❤️
