It can take min 2 years and can go to 5 yrs. Requires ruthless determination is required for this exam . It's a long process and you should be ready for failures and take them positively.

Preparation for UPSC starts right from School days. If one starts to prepare only after graduation, it's very difficult. The knowledge that we gained in school should be made use of. Plus, learning is not just for passing your exams and score marks. The ones who scored top marks in UPSC exams aren't always the ones who scored top marks in school. They are the ones who endured and have a right attitude.

1. Thorough with NCERT
2. Select optional wisely (Based on interest not experiences or trend)
3. Start GS and optional parallelly.
4. Syllabus and previous year papers should be analyzed to know demands of UPSC.
5. Dont focus much on answer writing (maybe only on weekends) or newspapers(only the headlines maybe).
September - December(After getting basic idea of UPSC, GS and optional)
1. Newspapers and Current affairs become important(By this time you should be clear of what you have to read)
2. First reading of GS and optional should be complete.
December - March
1. Ethics paper
2. Essay paper(Prerequisites for this should be done by now)
3. Seconds reading should be completed(Dont focus on different sources, be concise with the sources you picked)
4. Make habit of notes making.
March - June(Prelims)
1. Dedicate for prelims
a. Focus on test series
b. Time management during exam
c. Focus on content important for objective (Spectrum, Rajnikant etc)
2. UPSC gives results atleast 1 month later, don't wait for those, start preparing for Mains the day of prelims itself.
June - October(Mains)
1. Focus on answer writing (7 questions a day atleast and discuss with groupmates)
2. Test series again. (Helps in time management)
3. Current events and make notes about them. i.e Be ready for questions that are going to be asked in mains related to current events beforehand.
October - Interview
1. Opinion, decisiveness, expressiveness, confidence are tested
2. Newspaper reading and get opinions regarding debatable events.
3. Go for mock interviews (For feedback on verbal and non-verbal mistakes)
4. DAF preparation. (Consists of nearly 80% questions for interview)
