Lovely to watch this massive achievement by the Yorkshire Wildlife Park who got Amu,Amu, Kai, Riku and Hanako out of that Japanese hell hole where they'd 'lived' for years. So sad all four have now passed, Hanoko the last survivor today. Before people start spouting about animal rights, zoos are bad blah blah blah, look at where these bares came from and where they finished up. zoos at opposite ends of the spectrum. Ussuri Brown Bears can live up to 37 years, but the poor diet and awful condtions in Japan took their toll on the four bears. All I believed had servere arthristis and heart disease issues and were treated for these in the UK. One by one decisions had to be taken to end their suffering but, YWP gave them a home, food, and space to move. the last 14 months of Hanokos life was probably the best she had. What a shame they could have come earlier.
The bad ZOO's give bad reputation to others! This is amazing place! And they keep rescued animals! Giving beautiful homes to so many badly used creatures. Shame on Japan! They could have done better! It is not the question of money but knowledge really and compassion. Hard to believe such an intelligent nation is still lacking on that front...and it the same throughout the rest of the Asia...the evil ppl do over there is unthinkable...and it takes those few plus outsiders to help starting sorting that mess....
These bears are from the Ainu Museum in Shiraoi, Hokkaido, it was so disheartening to see them there like that, also the dogs they keep... Awesome to know they are out of there and in a better place. Fortunately there are still many of their kind wild in nature in Hokkaido.
I am VERY disappointed seeing how Japanese treat their captive animals! The enclosures for elephants are just shocking! And they are very often alone for years and years on concrete floors! They could do much better than that! They are better than that! For some reason they are lacking in compassion for the wild creatures....still....
I can spend an hour of my visits toYWP(on Annual Pass) watching The Boys playing together and swimming. Horrible to realise they reached middle-age before being given the chance to do either.

I for one, am not opposed to all zoos. Yes, there are some really horrible ones out there who don't care for and love the animals, but there are many that do. The Columbus Zoo even has a conservation program. I think that a lot of species would be extinct right now if there weren't programs like that one to keep them from being totally wiped out. It's usually in foreign zoos, where the animals aren't taken care of properly. That's just my thoughts on zoos and the animals in them. This just makes me SO happy that these 4 are finally somewhere they can live a happier and healthier life. Sure I would rather all animals be in their natural habitat, but we humans are a greedy lot and usually pay no mind to the animals or the place they call home.
Sooo happy to see the bears in a much better place and looking forward to seeing them next week but are scooters allowed in Park I will careful and it will help me a lot more I would like do have autism and I get crazy like leg pain i it’s sounds weird but it’s help me

They did. Yorkshire Wildlife Park is dedicated to rescuing animals in need and caring for/breeding critically endangered ones as well as supporting conservation work around the World. They doubled their weight and even went into partial hibernation in the Winter, the first time they had been healthy enough to so so. Stimulating toys and ways of hiding their food or making it a chllenge to reach led to the Boys being active and adventurous despite some physical limitations. Riku in particular was smart at figuring out easier ways to get the food than intended (why climb to reach a platform when you can just shake the pole so the food works its way to the edge and falls off?). Kai was the first to try new things and Riku would watch carefully to see if it was safe. Sadly, the Bears' health issues were even worse than realised, with years of terrible nutrition and confined concrete cages leading to weak hearts, extremely bad arthritis and porous bones. They were given the best veterinary care and looked after with love, good food and plenty of opportunity to play and learn to live life to the full. However, the following year one began limping badly despite his medication and was reluctant to go outside. When he was scanned they saw his bones were in such bad condition it was decided not to wake him up because he could never have a good quality of life again. His brother, who had always seemed the less agile one with worse arthritis, pined for him and grew unwell and had to be euthanised about six weeks later despite the best care possible. They'd even tried to bring old Hanako to the Boys' part of the reserve to keep him company but she wanted nothing to do with him. As Winter approached the decision was taken to euthanise old Hanako, already past the expected lifespan, whose health had also deteriorated. They had been loved, stimulated and given the chance to live like Bears again to the best of their physical ability. When the veterinary care was not enough to prevent them future suffering they were sadly let go after at least having had a short time of happiness.
Did you see how they keep elephants over there?? Absolutely Heart breaking!! I really like Japan and Japanese people. BUT they are same in their attitude to wildlife as the rest of Asian countries...no compassion, no understanding to speak off...It doesn't seem to change....very very disappointing!!

Why don't these bears get released in the Japanese forest?? There are many wild bears in Japan but some of them are kept in cages? I don't get why they are in cages in the first place. Are they too wild or too violent to be free in Japanese mountain forest? I don't know the background to this rescue story.
Lewt Moo They are too damaged(see my reply above). They were afraid to step on grass, kept "spinning", as they had to in their old cages, even though now in roomy surroundings, hadn't experienced water(apart from small drinking bowls) - food was floated in drums to get them used to touching water- and they have skeleto-muscular problems requiring close veterinary supervision. Their progress to the end of this video took many weeks of carefully designed remedial work. They have come on even further since then, even seeming to go into partial hibernation for the first time in their lives this year, but would never survive the wild. They love where they are, which provides all they need, including carefully designed exercise and mental stimulation. They had been exhibits outside a Japanese Folk Museum since they were small cubs, so YWP IS the wild to them, but with caring keepers!

There may be a tiny percentage of some animals, if they are rehabilitated and are not too damaged....it depends on the animal as well...It is truly unthinkable that a ZOO which suppose to care for wildlife can have such poor standards of keeping them and can do so much damage to creatures in their care! Shocking really disregard for their precious lives...

In their favour, the museum did reach out to Wild Welfare to find a suitable home, but the conditions they were kept in reflected past ignorance about animal care. They were in the Folk Museum to represent an old tradition in some parts of Japan (possibly still happening despite the Ussuri Bears' protected status there except in the pursuit of this tradition). Hunters from a village would seek out a mother bear in the den with two cubs, kill the mother and take the cubs back to the village where they were reared for two years. Then a special festival was held at which the Bears were killed. This practice was believed to bring good fortune to the village. Fortunately attitudes have changed and the Museum realised the Bears needed a better life than they could provide. The sad ending to the story is that they enjoyed only just over a year before one by one their health problems were too severe to give them a good quality of life and over the space of about four months they had to be euthanised. Their time at YWP was very happy and full of love, with the best care possible to help them enjoy life until it was no longer in their best interests.
Oh, I so wish I was the judge and jury to dish out the punishment to humans who are cruel to animals.......I wouldn’t inflict physical harm, just stick them in a cage in the middle of the jungle then throw them crap food and dirty water, just for a week.
