The ending meant alot. The tiny bit of light gleaming through the bulldozers meant (to Kowalski) that there was still a hole to escape through. It symbolized that no matter how far life pushes you, no matter who's chasing you or for how long, nobody can take away your freedom and there's always a way out.
i drove a 71' 440 -6pak Challenger a long time ago..top Banana with a black top, pistol grip 4 speed.. shaker hood one of 127 made..build date on the car was 4/1/71 one of the last ones made!..the car had drum brakes!!...all go no slow...lol
Agree with everyone, one of the greatest road pictures, greatest soundtracks and greatest endings to a movie ever. Anyone I show it to, stays silent thru the whole last scene. Powerful stuff, An era of film making long long gone. But glad it gave us this classic.
Me and my Pops watched this movie everyday after school for 2 years straight. Probably hold the world record for most times watched. Can quote this line for line. Plus the right hand drive Challenger negative flip when Kowalski is driving through the desert has anyone noticed that. Or that they smash a bow tie at the end instead of one of those beautiful Dodges
I was lucky enough to help build a challenger that looked just like this. with a 440 with 2 4bbls i built for it we had her running 165 on US 41 in indiana. an it was still pullin hard. but ran out of straight road. one of the best cars i ever drove.
@Coolestmovies It's a shame there aren't many young kids into cars that much anymore. I'm 17 and there was literally one person at my school with an interest in cars but he graduated. It's parents faults, though. My father started my obsession early.
Man, Thanks A LOT for posting this awesome soundtrack from one of the GREAT movies of the 70's......ahh makes me wanna hit the road in my old 1972 Monte Carlo :)
Kowalski wanted to die , he had nothing to lose or something to live for , he was smiling cos he knew shortly everything will be over and he will be free compared to Dirty Marry Crazy Larry where the protagonists didn't wanted to die and almost managed to escape
see the UK cut of the movie, the naked girl on the bike was LIFE , in the UK cut there is an extra 7 min scene with a woman hithiker who is DEATH , Kowalski accepted pot from her
He saw the light and thought he would go through it because he was on drugs. But that life and death stuff is interesting - He probably even hallucinated that hitchhiker woman because she was gone when he woke up. The movie is full of deep messages which nobody understands.
What I liked about the ending was that if you look closely, you'll notice that the car that's upside and burning is a Camaro. No one in their right mind would burn a Challenger. :)
Yep, The Camaro was being towed by one of the Challengers used in other parts of the filming (a 383, I think). From what I understand, a cable about 1/4 mile long was attached between the Challenger and the Camaro. The 383 was equipped w/ an automatic transmission to lessen the slack in the cable.
Huge Thanks for posting this song . One of my all time favorite movies . I tried and tried to find this song and never knew the name. p.s. my idea of a PERFECT movie night is Vanishing point followed by two lane blacktop . Id like to own the challenger one day but right now im building a 55 chevy similiar to the tlb car.
Anyone who loves this movie owes it to themselves to watch the 1994 movie TERMINAL VELOCITY, directed by Richard Serafian's son Deran, in which Charlie Sheen drives a white 1970 Dodge Challenger. Unlike the cars in VANISHING POINT, however, the Charger in the later film really DOES meet an unpleasant demise. :-(
Yup. Another scene I liked was after the first chase scene, when he stopped to have a smoke? They were trying to say he had a soul. That he wasn't a mindless evil force or anything like that, but that he was just like you or me, he had to smoke a joe and calm down for a minute.
It was not a Challenger that went into the bulldozers, they used a 68 camaro. Of course after the crash you'd see the steels on the car because they'd want you to believe it was the Challenger. Watch the movie and pause it just before he hits the dozers, then look at the tail lights. The '70 Chally and the '68 camaro had very similar body lines and at that high of a speed, they can pass off for one another. Dodge did not allow them to destroy a Chally. If you know cars, you'd notice the lights.
I want to re film the ending of this movie where he pulls over , puts his hands on the bonnet and gets arrested, and as he gets put into the back of the divvy van, the camera pulls away and every one cheers for Kowalski, that's a would be a great way to stick it up them blue meanies. I used to be a blue meanie and I love this movie.
I had someone reply "Bull****" when I first pointed that out. I then located a website that had actual pictures taken on the set. Unfortunately, I couldn't include the link. Hey, and I agree with your assessment about the Challenger. It, and the 'Cuda were instant winners.
@moparbros hey man I'm from downunder too , lets go cruising with some supersoul music baby......... I used to be a blue meanie but I love the freedom of this movie, the music, the sound of the car and just running away being free.
@bunkieb00 The last song playing, when He slams into the dozers, is one of 2 or 3 of my favorite ones. It has a unique up beat quality & a punch, to it.
They also wanted to give Kowalski a mythical aura. Added to what you say, once the credits start you can see the firemen putting the fire down, and you can see the car is empty. There's no trace of Kowalski, other than a burnt jacket.
@ElCastrador --- I have a vague recollection of the director saying this, and being a bit puzzled at how he could be so utterly wrong. If you look at the wreckage of Kowalski's car during the final shots of the movie, it's clearly a CAMARO (with badging visible in one shot), and not a Charger at all. The story goes that the Charger actually towed the Camaro into the bulldozers.
Outstanding 'car' movie so if you like cars and a HOT motorcycle rider, WATCH IT! The plot is dumb but it's a film with some deep meaning of the times, so you need to look at it from that angle, not someone delivering a smashed up Challenger to a customer. LOL!

it was a '67 camaro that was used as the crash car because dodge didn't want a challenger destroyed on film. From what i read it was said that dodge would disallow use of the challenger in the movie if one was to be intentionally destroyed, so the '67 camaro was picked because the cars had nearly identical streamlines and with the blur from the speed it can be passed off as a challenger to the average spectator. I may be right, I may be wrong but it's what i read and it makes sence to me lol.
@moparbros just started on a vauxhall magnum 1973 converting to 4.6 v8 we don't get muscle cars over here in uk so gotta make your own n this is as close as your gona get however doesn't stop you painting it cream white and using some imagination hehe
They treated the cars used in the film with a lot of respect, and no actual R/T's were used in the making. When you see the crash and the hood flies off, you can clearly see it hasn't got Challenger scoops, as it is the one on a 6 cilinder Camaro. I find it funny that, even being a new, replaceable car in 1970, the filmcrew fell in love with it.
@ElCastrador ---- Incidentally, I clicked on your channel page and noticed you're 22. It's cool that ANYONE your age is heavy into cars, but I've got a few years on you. I'm 41, on my 7th car, and was alive when these gems were still common on the street. Sadly, by the time I could drive, they were all "collector's items" and largely out of reach, so all I had were fond memories of being a passenger. I may get these two names mixed up, but my obsession's as deep as yours, I'll bet! Cheers!
@67DieHardPatriot454 He was a Hero, even tho He did suicide. Message was, the system screws ya over, if ya don't play ball n be a crook. He decided He had enuf, lost His lover, She died while surfing, got busted for protecting the young girl from rape, set=up. Did Viet Nam, etc. His choice to go, I respect that..
It is mentioned in many interviews about the film to different members of the making. Not too hard to find. It was a very cool car, it arrived late and that's what "killed" it. Though, maybe that is part of why we see it now as such a cool, cult car.
@GetStuffed88 its amazing when u watch the movie in th3e end its a 67 camaro thats blown up!! not a Challenger they never wanted to wreck the car just a dime a dozin camaro!
@ElCastrador --- My bad on the Charger. It's late here. (I do know which is which. Had a Challenger in the family for years. Gone before I could drive it :-( ). HOWEVER, watch your DVD again and see very clearly that the car crushed in the bulldozer scoop IS a Camaro (the name's even visible in one shot). The only reason the wreck has Mopar steels on it is for a visual match with the Challenger (or Challengers) seen earlier in the picture, but it's NOT a Challenger, it's Hollywood!
@ElCastrador ---- Oh, and one last thing. Serafian makes other mistakes on that commentary track, so I wouldn't take him at his word. I'd have to listen again to pick them out, but I remember raising an eyebrow a few times while listening. ;-)
one of the best road movies of all time with a great music
The ending meant alot. The tiny bit of light gleaming through the bulldozers meant (to Kowalski) that there was still a hole to escape through. It symbolized that no matter how far life pushes you, no matter who's chasing you or for how long, nobody can take away your freedom and there's always a way out.
That’s the deepest shit I ever read on the internet
That's deep man, there is always a way out
think Kowalski was upset about unleaded fuel
@@nevittwoods1730 lmfao
damn , i thought it was cause of being on speed for days on end...
RIP Barry Newman. He has made it to the light between the dozer blades!

the song that makes you feel like you could drive through a couple of bulldozers
you have to watch the movie
at least he scratched their paint
ROFL ...well, try to at least...😉
With a Camaro
A cult classic ! Never get tired of watching this movie and am now 72 yrs old
Two lane blacktop is a 'keeper also" real life captured through the lens !! Running on empty . Is also a classic 👌 👍👍👍
Best roadmovie ever!!!
Good song for being the last you ever hear.
Mopar To Ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Long live Brother K and Super Soul !!!!!!!!!!
"Thrills, chills and a handful of pills".
Perhaps the spirit of Kowalski lives in 2020. I do hope so.
Always
Kick ass music, kick ass car and a nice fuck the authority plot. Great Movie

great film grat song! thank u
i love the movie.
Just imagine what seeing this movie in 1971 was for a coming of age movie for a teenager
Smoked a lid of pot in barstow
Didn't smoke the weed but it sure hooked me on muscle cars. I have a 2020 Challenger R/T so the film had quite an influence.
Great song. Great film. Great moment.

Close enough, still this movie rocks and so does Mopar.

Great music
i agree it sums up the movie brilliantly.
Everybody looking for the Vanishing sound track,,,go to I TUNES its there in the original versions...I waited 38 years and now I have it...SO CAN YOU
I caught it on Fox Movie Channel, Widescreen version too. Thank god for TiVo
Same here. It really makes the final scene.

I watched this movie absolutely peaking on shrooms when I was a young lad. That final sequence mixed with this tune hit me right in the feels!

Feelin kinda lonely
Gonna be in tampa only
A few days, at the most
I realize it's early
But I'm gettin kinda squirrely
So I go down stairs for a toast
I'm clinkin glasses
Drinkin fast
And pretty soon, I think I'll ask
A lady for a dance or two
I found my legs to test em
And my feet ain't where I left em
But the music makes me want to move
I got the rockin
Rollin
Reelin
Feelin
Somethin, drunkin's, comin
Over me
Now some how or another
I am dancin like a mother
And I'm lookin
Real cool
I'm thinkin every minute
While I'm out there spinnin
And if I fall, I'll really be the fool
Whizzin craze
A vision haze
And pretty soon, collision, made me
End up down on the floor
The band is really playin
The guitar is almost sailin
And the music makes me dance some more
I got the rockin
Rollin
Reelin
Feelin
Somethin, drunkin's, comin
Over me
Well, now I'm really drunk'n
And my heart a starts to thumpin
And my chest a ringin in my ears
To start a conversation,
Never call a rare occassion
And order up a round of beers
A woman walkin by me
Dark, and I reach out and snag her
She's talkin, --she's mad--i'm laughin in my phone
Finesse, I ain't it's master
But I guess I must of asked her
Somethin good
Because we're goin home
I got the rockin
Rollin
Reelin
Feelin
Somethin, drunkin's, comin
Over me
I got the rockin
Rollin
Reelin
Feelin
Somethin, drunkin's, comin
Over me
