Jesse's technique was almost a 100 years ahead of its time. His robot likeness meant he didn't dissipate too much lateral energy, the way other sprinters of his time did. Modern sprinters have learned to maintain their form even when lactic acid build up tries to force them otherwise. Owens is remarkable because he did this even before we understood the science behind it

sprinting mechanics are dependent one the athletes anatomy/physique and strength. that's why we always see different mechanics/styles. For example Oblique Seville and Joe Fanbulleh have very different mechanics probably because of their different body structure. Take Su vs Lyles. they look so much different.
OMG...Jesse Owens looked like he was floating on air... Bob Hayes's form was "rocky" but still amazing... He was so strong... He won the 100 in the 1964 Olympics from Lane 1 on a muddy sender track... WOW... Carl Lewis's running style looked silky smooth and effortless to me... And it's truly amazing to watch Yohan Blake's compact running style. He has posted some amazing times in the 100... If Usain Bolt wasn't around he would hold the records in the 100 and 200... All of the guys mentioned are amazing athletes ... A GREAT VIDEO...

Still love the way he blasted out of the blocks and was so far ahead at 50 meters...so much, that he could just cruise to the finish line.

I know he didn't concentrate on the 100m for almost all of his career, but I'd like to nominate Michael Johnson. I remember people saying when he first came on the scene that he'd never amount to much using that upright running technique.
After Bolt did his 9.58 he admitted that the coach wanted to try to correct his form and he hoped to go faster. He did show that in ‘12 when they crushed the 4x100 record.
@@dave929 please explain what he did wrong, he had great front side mechanics, high center of mass, vertical force projection, dorsal flexion and heel recovery. literally a check mark in every box. Yeah he was a bit wobbly but that's what happens when one leg is longer than the other. There isn't much to correct

There are two drastically approach schools. After the 60's you can observe a shift between Europeans and Africans sprinters (Africans being trained in Europe often) and North American and Jamaican (carribeans) runners. Euro runners rely on form, while Americans/Jamaicans runners are Power runners . Marcel Jacobs tends to emulate American runners. Power runners tend to dominate.
The meaning of effortlessly is Asafa Powell? He never tensed his body. He just glided as if his feet barely touching the track yet kept his upper body in form
With sports, its not just about a perfect form, but a perfect form for your body type and muscles and how you train. I played basketball for most of my life...but if I asked Reggie Miller and steph curry how to shoot, I bet it won't work for me. They have mastered how they shoot for them and know how it works.
One more thing; How could anybody not just LOVE Su Bingtao? What an INSPIRATION to all he is going up against world's best sprinters with his much shorter legs ... and still often winning to boot! Can you say SUPERB?

Probably top 5 greatest ever drive phases known to sprinting, he was leading at 20-30 metres almost every race but at 5’8 and short legs it was difficult to stay in front which is probably why he was the 60m record holder for a while
I always tell the Jamaican track and field fans, that African American track and field has a longer history of dominance in the sport than Jamaica. This video is proof.

Some or the runners look like they are floating along the track and make it look effortless , then others look like every second is like running in quicksand and they fight all the way to the finish line .

My fav will always be Asafas running form. PURE MECHANICAL SPEED. He's the definition of how a sprinter should sprint from start to finish.

After clocking 9.58 Bokt focused so much on his start that he false-started two years later in Daegu.

His technique was great. Something close to Jacobs' and Tortu's. Quiet ahead of his time in terms of leg and arm movement.

C.Smith was a talented athlete indeed - a world record holder on 100 & 2x world champion on 200. But his running style could have been better in my oinion.
I think JC Owens is one of the best athletes in history who lives a tragic life. The USA doesn't recognise him when he retires. He lives a very low profile life because he was a black .

My feeling is the most of his performance was due to the weird but clearly effective way of running

Carl Lewis had perfect technique and was on drugs yet Bolt obliterated him in terms of times he could run
That's probably why Lewis made those comments to discredit Bolt by claiming Bolt was on drugs
He just couldn't accept that Bolt was a naturally better athlete
