Reach For The Sky
“It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favourite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.” - John Mayer
The PRS Silver Sky is an idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar where every detail adds up and sets this guitar apart from the pack and the past. The result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, the Silver Sky is based off of years of development. Incorporating Mayer and Smith’s favourite elements of 1963 and 1964 instruments with an eye toward modern references, the PRS Silver Sky delivers the warmth and familiarity of an old guitar with the finesse of a brand-new instrument.
Some of the more distinctive specifications include, the headstock shape, tuners, bridge, pickups, and neck and fretboard options. The headstock shape is based on PRS’s trademark design, but inverted both to accommodate Mayer’s playing style and also to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which makes staying in tune easier. The tuners are a traditional vintage-style, closed-back tuner, but with PRS’s locking design. The steel tremolo takes the patented PRS design and incorporates Gen III knife-edge screws. Setup flush to the body in the neutral position so that the tremolo bridge only goes down in pitch, the bridge’s increased contact with the body allows the guitar itself to be acoustically louder, which in turn improves the signal to noise ratio of the single-coil pickups. The 635JM single-coil pickups are very round and full, with a musical high end that is never “ice-picky” or brash.
The Silver Sky comes with the option of a rosewood or maple fretboard. The maple fretboard option comes with the original 635JM neck shape, while the rosewood fretboard option has been subtly modified in the shoulders to feel more “rounded” in your hand. Both neck shapes were designed by researching vintage instruments and Mayer test-driving guitars on stage to find what felt right. The fretboard radius on both options is 7.25”.
Other high-quality specifications include a bone nut, a molded metal jack plate (curved to make plugging and unplugging a guitar cable hassle-free), retooled knobs, and PRS’s double action truss rod (accessible from the front of the headstock for ease of use). PRS premium gig bag included.

nice one guys!!!
Great video ! That Milkman amp sounds awesome Dr. Ric. Wow ! Blues On....💙
I got one last week. It's an amazing guitar. It was in tune coming out of the box, I played it for about 4 hours and didn't need to tune it once. Mental.
Dr. Ric is just a smokin guitar player. Cheers guys.
Great video folks! I sure do enjoy my PRS Silver Sky SE!
Folks, do yourselves a favour and check out @stefanhauk killing on his mean green PRS SE Silver Sky

Sounds great guys, I’m getting one tomorrow been trying for months. . Been playing for a long time. Can’t wait to work out on one. Subscribed. Great playing by both of you.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Best wishes from the UK 😎😎😎😎
Dr.Ric is awesome!
How cool is this?!? Totally chuffed to see Dr. Ric and Ryan on their own show - instant Sub, mates 🔥👍❤
Thanks so much mate…great to see you here! I’m so lucky to be involved with 2 great guitar RUclips channels! Hope you’re doing great and making a bunch of noise on your guitars! Cheers buddy!
amazing video guys, this is the intheblues extended universe and I love it. You guys rocked it and made the best video on this guitar I have seen so far and I have seen all the SS SE videos, All! The! Videos! :D
Really like the sound of that guitar! and you two guys are amazing! Love your playing! Cheers!
I really enjoyed both guys playing in this video and hope one day I can be even half as good!
Just added some time stamps to help with tonal comparisons! Tone nerds have at it🤓
That's some mighty fine guitar picking and tasty guitar tones
Great review! 👏👏👏👏👏
I absolutely love my PRS SE Silver Sky in Dragonfruit, they feel and play and sound amazing. Great demo for a great guitar 🎸.
I was surprised tho, when compared to the custom shop in the blinds, show how good they actually are
That was awesome 😀🤙
Looove your little jam at the beggining. So pretty! Frisson chills all over. Ps it's not just for John Mayer fanboys... fangirls too ;) (as you can see in my pic with my rose gold American made silver sky lol my baaby)
Absolutely right @hannahbrown! Thanks so much for supporting our channel! Ryan & I were both shocked by just how great these SE Silver Sky guitars sound! Cheers, Dr Ric 😀
Great video and comparisons. Although, it felt (and sounded) like Dr. R was playing more passionately on the Fenders, likely because of it being his comfort zone.
Between the 60s Am Original and the SS SE, the clear winner is Dr. Ric! I purchased a 60s American Original after testing Suhr, LSL, PRS, etc, but just fell in love with the classic Strat. They're all going to be great though and one might draw more inspiration from one over the other, and that's what matters in the end!
prs silver sky se is a great guitar. strat killer? maybe not, but has some great features and upgrades. great sounds too. just wish there were more colour choices
Actually, the pickups in the JM SE are stronger than the US version.
Do the two of you play in a band together. If not you should. Sounds like a hit band road ready
Hi John, You asked, we delivered! facebook.com/profile.php?id=100092854662775&mibextid=kFxxJD
This is just great! Dr Ric wow nice playing brother. What is that lovely delay that was on during the testing? Love both your playing!
When I bought my Sterling Cutlass CT50 HSS early last year, there were rumors of a silver sky SE coming. I have no regrets on my choice and personally think a 3×3 headstock looks odd on an S type. Now that sounds like I'm the pot calling the kettle black, but the 4×2 layout of the classic MM headstock, is to my eyes perfect. I wouldn't buy an Epiphone with the old cropped ear headstock either. Now I have 3 Epiphone Les Pauls from the Inspired by Gibson line with the Kalamazoo headstock. I guess I'm not into crazy shapes that don't flow well astetically. My LP custom silverburst had kidney bean tuning keys that looked goofy. Pitched them for Gotoh keystone lockers. Huge improvement.
still waiting for the next version with maple neck... or roasted maple neck
My favorite strat type is still warmoth partscasters , i buy for performance not the name on the headstock tho .
Wait, Dr Rick is on this channel?!?
Have my SS SE tomorrow ,got the Dragon Fruit, snagged a deal on an SE 594 also
The Strat... reinvented at an affordable price! Fender fot shown up!
A coupla upgrades and it's a generational guitar 🎸 100%
The SE is better than any budget fender, but not as good as the American strat
I bought a ‘Moon White’ PRS SE in Melbourne… It is plagued with problems; a screw to adjust the bridge saddle fell out, consequently the thread was stripped due to low quality. A tuner jammed up and could only be moved after spraying with DW40. The neck is unstable, extremely affected by weather changes and won’t stay in tune. And the high E string is prone to breakage (a common problem according to some PRS sites.) The guitar is a dud - PRS have been contacted, but as yet have not, and don’t look like they’re going to do anything about it? It’s been 2 weeks. I’ve been a pro player for over 30 years and never encountered anything like this. I would never trust a PRS SE to do gigs/sessions with without a backup.
Hi @G North! Sorry to hear bout your SE, has the shop you bought it from had a look at it for you?
After shooting this video I am really keen to buy one for myself cause of how they sounded.
If you'd like I'm sure the guys at Music Junction would love to have a look at it for you and to see if they can help you out? Which is why I asked if the other store you got it from had got in touch with anyone first, I dont want to 'double up'.
@@Guitarisk I have one, I never needed to even adjust it, the guitar came perfect from the box.
@@nunezkant So good to hear! I don't think i need more convincing to buy one! 😄
The guitar of course stored in a shipping container for days or maybe weeks, things will get loose as the temperature and humidity change. it's the duty of the shop to set it up correctly for you. Every time I bought a guitar, the shops always did a good job of setting it up for me.
I have no interest in Silver Skys (No lefties anyway) , but do I wanna listen to Ryan and Ric play any guitar for 50 mins? You bet. I'm in.
Yes sir!!!! Totally agree!!
You guys are way too kind….Ryan and I appreciate your support! I generally avoid long videos due to the incessant waffling….thanks for your patience guys!
Left-Handed coming in the fall of 24'
No, it's not a "strat killer"... I own one Silver sky, I can say that it's a perfect guitar, it plays beautifully, and it's fascinating that it stays in tune. But it doesn't sound like a top Strat. It sounds great, but a little different. But this is my favorite guitar right now. I have 27 guitars 🙄
This is the SE, not the core one.
I own two PRS SE, one Single cut and one with a FloydRose. . I‘m not happy with not because they‘re bad but it‘ss not my favourite. Fact is: it‘s nearly impossible to sell them, no one will pay a fair price. With a Strat no problem. So I‘ll never ever again buy anSE
You guys need to work on timing volume and accompaniment
strat sounds have been done to death, how about come up with something NEW
@BillSanders I totally told the team that we should make this guitar sound like a lawn mower but everyone said "No, who would want to see a video where they make a single coil not sound like a single coil?"
Glad there's one guy out there. Keep flying that flag champ!
@@Guitarisk you sound drunk
@@cashway0420 Do I remind you of dad before he left to get "milk"?
@@Guitarisk you know your cool when you got a play list full of "Tom Bukovac" videos lmao rock on buddy, great taste in music...
