in terms of his general gear, justin you’re pretty much spot on. he pretty much only uses his vintage strats. not known for custom shops, but a fender guy for sure. at the festival, he said “those PRS guys know what’s up. and John Mayer, i think he knows a little something too.” so he definitely likes it !
I love how Sayce has been embracing more modern stuff, with him being featured on both Tone King and Rabea Neural DSP plugins and using the silver sky here. It really proves that much of his tone is found in his massive, soulful attack. It's in the hands man. I love watching him play completely unplugged too you can really hear how his technique facilitates aspects of his tone like sustain that many people might understandably attribute to his rig. Would love to see him rock one of those new super-thin nitro-finished prs silver skys. Maybe a white one with a maple fretboard for the Hendrix vibe and just really really tear it up. I love this man he's an absolute beast!
I think when you pick up a silver sky.. It doesn't really feel like it wants to be played tough like that. As weird as that sounds lol. Its like a hi-fi strat.. Rather than the vintage vibe strats give off.
Philip is without a doubt a blues guitar legend. I’ve seen him live and up close many times and he never disappoints. There’s really nobody else I know of that plays with the same aggressiveness and raw power that he does. There’s very few that put their whole heart and soul into their playing the way Philip Sayce can.
was hoping you’d cover this! i had my SS refinished in black nitro about a year ago, and it wears more than my nitro fender so far. i actually chatted with phil about it on live some time ago. truly one of my favorite players.
I believe it’s a poly body! I was at the DIGF with him backstage for a bit..def not nitro tho! He really digs that guitar tho…using it to keep his vintage gear off the road and safe at home! 🤘🏾
Thank you for this video justin! Philip is my #1 heroe at the moment! Very informative..also thank you for all your devoted work on john mayer!! My other #1 THANK YOU! Greetings from sunny 🇲🇽
I have an onyx one and asked the PRS customerservice last year what kind of finish I have with my serial number. They said it isn't nitro. But the finish has some wear, some cracks, not heavily but still. All my other guitars are poly. My Reverend Manta Ray is now 5 years old and that polyfinish, apart from some minor scratches is still pristine, unlike my PRS. If I recall it correctly the service rep wrote that my finish is acrylic...so yeah. Then again, I have one spot where some liquid hit the lacquer and it turned the finish milky, which is supposed to happen with nitro, right?
I relicked my Silver Sky a week ago... Dropped it and it fell on the edge of a trash bin. 😅 With Strat style guitars I am into it; with my other PRS I might have cried myself to sleep that night.
@Justin can you help me clarify something, I have an Onyx SS as well from 2018 but mine has the silver painted scoop, I've seen some that is not like that like the one Philip is playing. When did they stopped doing that and why? Also regarding the finish, yes it is poly but it is not in the bullpark with a Fender poly when it comes down to the feel. It's not sticky and thick plastic feeling at all, it is a really good quality thin poly that can still be dinged and worn unlike the Fender poly. Of course it is still much more durable than any nitro finish. I really like it and it suites the guitar's modern, immaculate vibe.
Thanks for honoring my request HAHAHA Edit: I wonder what kind of mods he's made to the SS. I believe he uses .11s, and I'm sure he prefers jumbo frets and a much higher action than John might.
He usually plays 11s but does go low as a 9 depending on how beat up his fingers and tendons are. But the top wound strings tend to stay pretty heavy with the low E being 54 gauge.
I bet his onyx is probably set just like mine. I got to show him my 62 the last time he played at the sugar mill and he laughed that the the action was set so high
Considering he uses fuzzes I doubt it, I had treble bleed on my strat and had to take it out cause it just didn't sound good on anything lower than 7-8 when fuzz was engaged. Way too thin and bright. I bet the treble with volume down comes from a fuzz.
@@spatnaspolecnost try one of those variable treble bleeds. It can be difficult to get the right resistor value to find that sweet spot where it will sound good with a fuzz face.
Here's a clip that I found of Philip talking about the PRS in Dallas. He likes the guitar well enough to give it, Paul Reed Smith, and John Mayer a shout out, so that's saying something! ruclips.net/video/whPH2Ewgeko/видео.html
Mmmm I doubt it. It's not like Philip has a history with PRS guitars, and tbh, it would be kind of strange to send Philip another guitarist's signature guitar. It's not like Philip and John are good friends, though they've been seen together before
It doesn't mean he has to play it. The fact that he's been spotted on more than one occasion playing it speaks to his acceptance of it as being a guitar with enough quality and playability to gig it.
@@vedder10 I agree I never said it did. I guess I was just speculating maybe it is nitro. He can play whatever he wants. I think everyone assumes it’s not nitro because it’s black I was just throwing out another possibility.
Actually the dude in Shinedown literally reliced a Roxy Pink one and said that John Mayer or PRS actually got pretty ill at him for doing it. LOL! If you watch the Rig Rundown that Premier Guitar done with him you'll see it on there. It was probably within the last year or so.
I thought they were upset he painted it pink. He did right before they were releasing the pink version. He didn’t’t know there were releasing a pink one…

many players don't understand this.
This is first time I’ve heard someone playing the silver sky with some real balls.
You don't think John Mayer has balls? The man is touring alone and acoustic.
I agree with you…I think even JCM plays with a more sofisticated feeling on a Silver Sky…Philip makes the Silver Sky sound like a true Strat
I agree he is a bad ass

I’ll have to watch more of him. From this clip he definitely has that SRV approach to blues.
You think he plays more aggressively than Kenny Wayne shepherd? If so I gotta see him
@@Stormchaser422 yes positively
Philip Sayce is a Monster blues guitarist...Tone..Technique etc....deserves more acknowledgement
The SS is definitely a blues machine. The harmonic overtones of those pickups are second to none.
I sure hope John saw this footage and was pleased seeing this guitar, played this way ✊🏼

I rusted out the bridge the first tour I took my silver sky out on. From gigs in Mexico the color changed and I’ve worn a ton of finish off the back..

😀 his bracelet and rings in combination with his playing style can cause some serious damage 🎉 I haven’t heard of him … will look him up ! Thanks !
By the way mines a 2019 nitro snow white.biggest bitch about it is the gig bag.For the money perhaps a hard ahell case.
Cool to see him giving this a go but...Anyone else also think he sounds SUBSTANTIALLY better with a Strat in his hands?!
Yes
Wonder if he mounted a treble bleed on the volume pot…Sayce likes to change the level of dirt with it and it doesn’t affect the treble lose then

why does he have a piece of cloth at the end of his strap?
Won't let his be the first. I just tied my silver sky to my bumper and I'm going for a ride. Will report back.
