Today we are talking about my Phalaenopsis, species and hybrids.
For the last 4 years I have been growing all my Phaalenopisis in water culture and they have been loving it. It is a method I really like mostly because I can monitor the root growth and i love to see the roots through the glass vases.
Despite all this, I am being forced to do a change in my method of growing them and the reason for that are the very humid winters we have been having lately. The change in set up is, therefore, an atempt to make indoor space a healthier environment for us humans, and still give my Phalaneopsis a médium that does not degrade.

Hoje falamos das minhas Phalaenopsis, espécies e híbridos.
Nos últimos 4 anos tenho cultivado todas as minhas Phaalenopisis em cultura de agua e elas têm adorado. É um método de que gosto muito principalmente porque consigo acompanhar o crescimento das raízes e adoro vê-las através dos vasos de vidro.
Apesar de tudo isto, sou obrigada a fazer uma mudança no meu método de cultivo e a razão para isso são os invernos muito húmidos que temos tido ultimamente. A mudança na configuração é, portanto, uma tentativa de tornar o espaço interior num ambiente mais saudável para nós, humanos, e ainda assim dar às minhas Phalaneopsis um substrato que não se degrada.

I do grow my plants in pumice for years now, they love it! I hope your Phals will love it too. I’m pretty sure they will ❤, the set up looks amazing. And you can mix pumice very easily with pebbles.

@@meriamorpelasorquideas A maioria das minhas orquídeas está agora em substrato inorgânico. No verão dá me mais trabalho com as regas porque não temos a chuva para ajudar mas espero que facilite durante o inverno. Beijinhos e boa semana 😘😘😘😘

@@rickl.orchids Hi Rick, Thank you so.much for commenting, much appreciated ❤️ I realized that inert medias are much easier for me especially in winter, no worries about roots getting wet for too long. Also no concerns about getting acidic. The downside is that I have to water more frequently during summer. I cannot count on Rain as here it hardly ever rains during summer. @@josefinahenriques Muito bom dia amiga Josefina!!! Em Lisboa eu tinha um desumidificador mas era um apartamento e era mais fácil de retirar a humidade. Tudo fechado depois de arejar a casa. Mas aqui é impossível pois a porta para o pátio está sempre aberta durante o dia, mesmo no inverno. Há sempre coisas para fazer lá fora e a humidade lá fora é demais. Hoje mesmo está nublado e a humidade é tanta que chuvisca. Mas não molha o chão, é só a humidade que anda no ar, chegando aos 98por cento. Muitas vezes levanta de tarde e vem o sol mas acho que hoje isso não vai acontecer. Quem quiser fresquinho aqui encontra hehehe 🤣 Beijinhos 😘

Olá, Fernanda. Na minha cabeça teria menos trabalho🤭 Aqui só se vende pedra pomes em blocos de no mínimo 10 cm. Achei interessante. Fiquei apaixonada pelos vasos. Aqui não se vê assim. Com certeza as espécies vão se adaptar bem.😘💚🌺

É engraçado que eu estava fazendo estes replantes e me lembrei de você e de como os seus replantes são bem mais práticos 🤣 A verdade é que embora não pareça, os nossos climas são bem diferentes e aqui não posso contar com a chuva no verão pois ela não acontece. E como cultivo dentro de casa a diferença no cultivo se acentua mais. Sempre acho curioso como as orquideas se adaptam a tantas formas de cultivo. Beijinhos e boa semana 😍🥰
I am sure they will do very well for you looking forward to future updates. I had some of mine in lecca and some in river pebbles they didn't like the lecca but the ones in river pebbles are doing well
Hi Tina, thank you so much for commenting and for your feed back. I have also tried leca at one time but I realized they suck humidity out of the roots unless they are always humid. On the contrary, pebbles keep humidity much better. I like them too. Have a wonderful start to the week 😍🥰
my prefered media is pumice - the only downside is it needs a bit of flushing first and I remove any pieces that are too dark in color because they hold more water than the lighter pieces.
For the humidity I can highly recommend a Meaco ABC dehumidifier. It is super efficient and uses very little electricity for the amount of humidity it removes from the air. I use it in winter when the air can't hold as much moisture so the humidity goes up. Plants will naturally increase the humidity a bit but a dehumidifier removes it well.
Hi Tom, thanks for the suggestion. I have a dehumidifier but I hardly use it because it's no use. What I mean is, the door that leads to the patio is always open during the day, regardless of the time of year. It's not only because of the pets, dog and cat. We, my husband and I, also like to have it open. We think of the patio as an extension of our lounge...
Well I’m surprised… you know I am 😅. And inorganic media is my first choice too. Now you need to control the watering, right?
I’m not afraid to overpot something that is used to the same media. But I’m dead afraid of a total transition. In fact mine did better than ever when I moved, but Phals are extremely finicky so I’m afraid to put a new order.

Phalaenopsis used to be hard to grow for me, too before I transitioned to water culture. I am not happy having to go back to pots. But I am hopeful they will love the pumice. These days, most of my orchids are growing in inert medium. More watering, yes, you are right. And I cannot count on summer rain as it does not happen. But at least I do not have to worry about acidity in the pots. Love you too, have a great start to the week dear Annie 💖😍🥰
The humidity can be pretty high where I live sometimes, but during winter the air gets dry so I have to use a humidifier.
The humidifier is WiFi controlled and automatically turns on when the humidity is too low.
I also have a couple of thermometers that also shoe the humidity level.
Hi Joe, thank you so much for watching and commenting and for your suggestion. I forgot to mention in this video that humidifier is useless for me. The thing is, we like to keep the door that connects the lounge with the patio outdoors. We keep it opened all year long during the day, not only because of the cat and dog but also for me and my husband. The patio is like an extension of the house and we have gotten so used to have the door opened that we almost feel almost claustrophobic if we have to close it. Quanto á Myrmecophila thompsoniana, a minha foi uma troca que fiz com a Nina de Ninja_orchids há já alguns anos. Mas sei que ela comprou de Thai Orchids and more. Acho que é na Tailandia. Mas ela comprou em 2018 quando ainda era possivel importar sem as restrições que existem hoje. Se ainda não tentou, veja nas nurseries da Alemanha. Eu já dei uma olhadela na Akerne orchids na Belgica pois gosto muito deles mas não têm neste momento. Boa sorte, beijinhos e votos de uma otima semana 🥰😍💖
Hi Fernanda, with bark, I can tell when it is dry, but with pumice, what indicator can be used to know when to water?
@@kevins9242 hi Kevin!!! Good question !!! Not difficult with Phalaenopsis, the color of the roots is the indicator. If they have turned silvery it means they are getting dry. I try to leave at least one root visible on the side of the transparent pot. I am still adapting to watering with pumice but what I have noticed is that pumice never feels wet but it rather provides constant humidity but good drainage and ventilation. To make sure roots got hydrated I soak the pots which I always have done with any kind of medium. Thank you for reaching out. If you need more insight please let me know. Happy start to the week 💐🥰
However, it would be so simple to cultivate these plants in a natural and much more suitable substrate.
So true, Laurent !!! I wish I could grow them outdoors mounted on trees but unfortunately my winter temperatures are warm enough. The only orchids I can grow mounted on trees are Dendrobium nobile and I have a few. I also grow some Cymbidium planted on the ground. Thank you for your comment, much appreciated ❤️💕💕
