    These are perfect setups, I fish them a few hundred yards off the beach in 20 foot of water. My setup is a Van Staal VR201 spooled with 450 yards of 50lb braid on a Heavy St. Croix 8ft. Avid Inshore. Typically use a similar float setup on 80lb FC snell notting 7/0 circles. Absolute best (reasonable) baits for the big boys are 7-8 inch mullet but bigger pins generally do the same trick.
    I fish by myself and it’s always a bit tricky, I’ve hooked into fish where the above setup comes close to being inadequate so I can’t really go lighter as chasing is very difficult. Just want to add a fool proof method, if you find them on the bait pods, you can chum them up to where casting/finesse is zero issue, they are finicky at status quo but fired up have zero qualms about literally anything. I’ve just thrown a baited hook off the back of the boat on my big senator rig and they take it 20 feet from the motor, those big tuna/shark setups are definitely healthier for them and those first 5-6 minutes are just as exciting. Thanks Captain, love the videos.

    Teramar is a beast of a rod hooked a tarpon with a smaller rating and handled like a champ ..

    Those Teramar double X’s really are fantastic rods. Huge backbone while still having great action and feel. They also cast a mile.

      St. Croix Avid Inshore series and their Freshwater Premier Musky are great made in USA alternatives.

    Blue PowerPro doesn't "blend in" in Charlotte Harbor! Wish they'd reintroduce Timber Brown again!! Till then it's their competitors mono. Looking forward to your episode on baitcasters, can't imagine holding a 8,000, 10,000 size spinner...

    Do you think the fishing season for tarpon is the same throughout the Gulf of Mexico? I live in Yucatan by the way. Nice video!

      There will be some variation in the season determined by latitude for sure

    So I’ve been curious so if you use this tarpon setup can it basically catch anything in the bay or inshore fishing Like drum snook obviously tarpon do you think Black tips and other smaller sharks could be caught on these Combos ?

    What line would you recommend for a 40-80 pound line rating rod? For tarpon

    • @flatsclasscharters
      @flatsclasscharters Год назад +2

      Really depends on the scenario and species you are challenged with but 40lb is more than adequate

      Just to show that both knots are strong and secure for tarpon fishing. But ultimately your choice

    The tip about not letting the tarpon get a breath sounds good for landing them quickly but could it kill them? I know they have to breathe air to survive.

    • @gisellesbikeseat
      @gisellesbikeseat 11 месяцев назад

      It's not gonna hurt them, they "breathe" underwater with their gills, but also can gulp air at the surface (unlike most fish) to get the extra boost. You're not gonna kill them by denying them the atmospheric gulp.

    • @comfortablynumb9342
      @comfortablynumb9342 11 месяцев назад

      @@gisellesbikeseat actually I remember hearing that tarpon will die after 12 hours of not having access to air to breath. They can't survive in an aquarium without a space to get a breath.

    • @gisellesbikeseat
      @gisellesbikeseat 11 месяцев назад

      @comfortablynumb9342 that may be true, but using the proper size tackle will limit the fight to a humane time frame. Of course you'll have to revive the fish, but it's rare for them to die unless you've really screwed up
