I think I can speak for everyone when I say that the best part of Karnivool releasing this as a single means we're one step closer to getting another album from them. It's only been 8+ years.
The website now says "New Site Under Construction". They haven't touched that website since they released Asymmetry in 2013. They have a new tour coming (COVID Permitting) They have released a new track. I reckon you might just be right. They must be about to release a new album. 😀
Great point! As painful as the waiting is, I'm happier to wait for good [great!] music, than get a bunch of mediocre stuff often (otherwise, I'd listen to pop...)
Well Kenny is also the frontman of Birds of Tokyo, so there's half your problem right there. Different band, different dynamic. Pop indie rock anthems for the mainstream radio stations. A different beast altogether.
There is not a single more hauntingly beautiful sound on this earth than Ian Kenny's unfathomably stunning falsetto. That's what got me hooked on Vool when I was 12 (28 now) and only serves as a constant reminder as to why they give me chills on every single listen to this day when they bring everything together.
Listening to Karnivool again now reminds me of how free and fearless I was as a teenager. Now I have to be that brave again, but as a warrior mum. Different stage of existence. Good to remember that mentality and apply now. Adulthood can make you soft and boring. Tool and Karnivool new albums got me reliving my teenage years).
Yeah, sound awake is their current opus. Themata is a slightly more traditional metal sound, that album ahs some absolute bangers. Asymmetry is more experiential and dark, still fantastic but it was a bit of a grower in places for me.
They released their Decade of Sound Awake livestream on Blu-ray. Highly recommended it! They also play Fade and Roquefort with the horns sections and it just sounds amazing.
I fell in love with Karnivool when they were touring their first album supporting COG. They have been my absolute favourite ever since. There's no band like them. My fav song of all time is C.O.T.E. I remember seeing them one new years in Melbourne absolutely wiped out on disco biscuits and when they played C.O.T.E it was like 400 orgasms at the same time.
I really love this tune. To me it sits perfectly between their previous albums: Sound Awake is incredible but often quite pretty and rhythmically "straight forward". Asymmetry is darker and more complicated but is far less easily digestible. Hoping for a full album sooner rather than later!
I’ll admit that I slept on the last two albums. Themata and Sound Awake are two of my favourite albums and now I am seriously looking forward to more new stuff!
Would love to see you do Synops off Karnivool’s first album. Also Doors (Now and then my life feels like it’s going nowhere) by that other epic Australian prog metal band Cog. Both are slow building tracks that’s creep up your spine like a centipede before bursting into euphoric crescendos. Absolutely phenomenal.
Been on board with the VOOL since headcase was first on full metal racket on triple j,after hearing VOOL iwas never the same since... So let's have some more of the same.....
@@jamesparkinmusic I suppose Straws Pulled at Random, or the solo section of Dancers to a Discordant System. there's a gorgeous melodic/ambient part at the end of Stifled or in the middle of I Am Colossus. but of course, they're more aggressive in nature.
So it must be coming up on 15 plus years. A friend of mine had recommended them, I'd heard them on commercial radio in Perth. I liked what I heard but I hadn't really been hooked in. Me and a bunch of mates went to the Big Day Out, a popular outdoor music festival in Australia at the time. One of our mates dragged us to the Karnivool stage. They were playing around 5pm on one of the smaller stages right in the back of the festival. The first song they payed was "Themata". I was standing there with a good mate of mine and we are both reasonable (if not good) amateur musicians. About a minute in to the set we looked at each other in astonishment. I've been a massive fan ever since.
Its so cool you did another Karnivool track so soon! As a drummer myself, I absolutely Adore the rhythmic escapades the guy behind the kit gets up to, as what he does beat/rhythmic loop wise is definitely something of his own, especially considering he usually plays without using the double pedal (with this particular song being quite the exception, which makes me excited for the future), and yet how Massive and Menacing his overall attack and precision is. However, the entire band are ridiculously masterful, which can be proven by observing how Tight their musicianship is overall. If you want to hear even more examples of them being at the frontier of _time_ then I would like to suggest you try something from their 2013 output Asymmetry, which is filled with material that to most ears might seem impenetrable due to how much they like to switch it up on that record. "A M WAR" is a fave of mine, as it actually has driven me to tears from how emotionally relatable it sounded to me one particular morning.
I’m still here Geebz! Another great review. And all Karnivool fans are still waiting for a new album, over 8 years now! Let’s hope this year is the one. 🙏🏼
Thats definitely Ian Kenny’s amazing vocals doing that work there. Karnivool are the masters and I really recommend Deadman by them and also some Dead Letter Circus!

While the two bands are pretty different the bass sound reminded me of a couple of tracks from Glassjaw, they've had a very similar tone in some of their albums iirc. Really interesting experimental musical parts and excellent musicianship whether it be vocals, guitars, drumming in Glassjaw as well, similarly Justin Beck likes to have the bass even somewhat more dominant and use the guitar sometimes as a higher pitched "soundscape" with the help of the pedal - especially in the latest album.

Aussie product love it. Northlane Citizen please
