I’d never do anything to “Bash” her or being down her reputation, but if I feel like she is not giving he fullest potential, then I will speak on it. Katy has been in the industry for many, many years and she found HER SOUND for a very long time and she kept that sound. That sound is now old and she doesn’t know how to get rid of it and create something new. And please don’t assume that everyone is just against Katy.
I think every artist has their time at the top of the charts and Katy has definitely had a good run! However, I think she’s at a point in her life where music isn’t a priority anymore. She’s getting married and is a new mother and I think music is becoming more something of a hobby for her, a way for her to express things she’s dealing with. Just because she isn’t charting as high as she used to doesn’t mean she’s not relevant anymore. I agree with Zack that Katy’s brand should be bigger and that she should try other ventures like acting or a makeup line.

I used to believe that but like come on - she is pregnant and she does waaay more than every other artist during the pandemic - 3 videos for Daisies, like 3 performances with Daisies if not more, I lost count, 2 videos for Smile (one of them is not released yet, but she said there will be an official video), many interviews and now she is performing at Tomorrowland. Everything while being pregnant. Plus she hopes to go on tour! This woman is uncanny and that clearly shows that she misses the point of her career when she was so active and in the spotlight. She just got stuck and her team is not necessarily helping her with moving forward. I hope she will change the record label soon cause Capitol is playing her dirty...
She has reportedly one album left (apart from Smile) to record to be free from them and the contract and she has already announced that she is going to do like another album in 2021. I don't know but I can see that she got tired of Capitol being useless and she just wants to leave as soon as possible. For the best.

In your Skype call with Christina, either you or Kenny mentioned how many Xtina is just comfortable with her "dimmed" level of fame. Similarly, I think Katy has been in the industry for YEARRSSSS. She's tired!
She has collected a huge fanbase and the demographic is younger, so obviously there's this call for a fun radio pop style from Katy when she releases new music. I think she has been avoiding that on purpose to somehow tell the world she's happy with where she is now. She doesn't want anymore big radio songs. She just wants to live her life, be with her family, and occasionally release a meaningful song, because she's still an artist at heart.
This is also comparable to Rihanna, who pretty much dropped everything to go on the makeup route. I think she is much happier with her life now that she doesn't have that pressure of having to deliver the next HIT! So let's give Katy a break, I think she knows what she's doing. If she really wanted to, we all know she could be topping the charts right now.

Very great point and as a xtina fan I complete agree. The thing is imagine urself in their situation. They are millionaires they can retire at any point. And they don’t owe us nothing. They don’t owe the world another radio hit because they have done it it’s already ticked off form their list. So as fans we should just be happy that they are creating the music they want and love, living a life they are content with and be grateful that we are still getting albums and concerts from them. Because they literally do not need to do any of that and can live of of song writing credits or just doing TV appearances

Trina de Mari Taylor Swift is still pretty consistent with her success and has had multiple top tens over the last decade. Dua Lipa is doing amazing right now too as a new pop girl. But women of colour (especially black female artists) are deservedly having their moment as they should ❤️

Katy is laughing at "clown" concept which she is accused of. Witness was a total experiment but people still hated her and asked for funny Katy. Now, she's giving you that but the clown is sad. So, she's doing what she wants and what she likes. She will smile anyway. Appreciate it.
But the thing is that she misunderstood what people wanted, Prism and TD were colorful eras with "fun" visuals but she had that sexy confident image and her mv's weren't ridiculous. Since Bon Appetit she is making fun of herself in everything she is doing so people don't even want to take her seriously and care about her. There is fun and fun if you understand what I mean, and how California Gurls mv was fun is very different from what she think people thinks of her and kind of use too much in her 2017-2020 mvs performance.

Some of us Katycats were high-key hoping for a revenge or more light and dark kinda vibe album. But we’ve also noticed the lack of support from her record label in the recent years. Not just in promotion and things like that. We’ve not been seeing much effort from her team to really put Katy in the spotlight again... and that’s one of the main problems. However she’s said it herself that she’s not looking for the spotlight anymore and as fans we have to respect her for that. Pushing her to make hits won’t help her evolve as an artist (which is something she is constantly doing), nor help her as a person through her ongoing healing process from the mental emanate she got from her last era. All she wants is for people to see her as a genuine artist who’s always up for new challenges, not just the sex appeal most of the gp has got up imprinted in their heads for the last decade. We love her as a uplifting personality, but we also understand that it can be trying sometimes once it’s too repetitive. But sincerely the uplifting songs are her brand and not a lot of artist are doing it like that these days. So it’s always good to see someone still spreading a message of positivity and overcoming difficult times. Her songs old and new will always bring a smile to my face and that’s what it’s all out!! And they STILL resonate. Many artists still struggle to get a song to achieve that level of relevancy and longevity. In all honesty, I think her team should be composed of people who genuinely want her to succeed in her upcoming eras, and are actual fans of her music. Many of us are actually rooting for her to leave the record label she literally revived when she first signed with them (no joke they were on the verge of bankruptcy and almost sold the building). All in all what we want for Katy is her outmost happiness, she deserves it after everything she’s put up through her whole career.
I have to disagree. Capitol Records invested so much money in her witness era promotional, with all of the music videos and witness live. I feel the public has just getting tired of katy perry... 🥺🥺🥺 like I feel i am the only one in highschool that was supporting her and her music. Others invested there time listening to rap and hippop. I mean i feel katy perry has never lost her spark, but people lost their interest in her spark... you know what I mean... I've always felt that Katy in a lot of ways musically is still a CCM artist. Her music majorly is very inspirational lyrically. A bunch of her songs could still be played on christian radio, and i honestly believe that's just her roots and what has always stuck with her.

Prism is already one of the most successful album's without being dark record but I would love to see reputation era of Katy
I’ve noticed all my life the the U.S loves to build celebrities up and tear them down, Katy is a perfect example of this because it was like one day everyone woke up and turned on her. Everyone was trashing bon appetit and swish swish and I honestly thought they had the best beats on the radio at the time and 365 was great but no one cared and I constantly see the gays on twitter trashing her, my fellow gays are the worst for turning on a singer. I think after she has the baby that she just takes a long break and stop doing American idol and stop pushing her shoe line and then come back with a new album.

I think that's kind of what Katy wants though. She doesn't care about what people want anymore, she's doing what she likes. She's going back to the roots of her own artistry and I appreciate that. For the first time, we're seeing Katy not try to please everyone and for that we low key should be grateful.

The biggest problem is the rollout, to be honest. Never Really Over and Harleys In Hawaii are so different from classic Katy but they still feel genuine. If those two had been released with Smile as a promo single, all within a reasonable time frame, there would be a lot more conversation about her.

I used to be a huge Katy fan back in her 'One of the boys' and 'Teenage Dream' eras. She had it all: lyrics, bops, videoclips, and diversity of content. I do agree, she's being doing more of the same and, honestly, her looks and concepts now are sooo cheap! Like, if it is a song about 'birthday' she will make a video about a birthday with cake.. If it is a basketball game, the video will show a cheap basketball videoclip. Back in 2010 she had the creativity to make a song about 'california girls' and transform it into that ICONIC sugarland fantasy. In TGIF she brought back the classic concept of 80's house parties. I feel like she lost her creative drive..everything she puts out there now is so forgettable, and I hate it bc I am always cheering for it to be good. I don't mind the blonde hair, not at all, but back then her having the black hair made her stand out of the rest... And about her campiness.. girl, let's be real, it is Adam Sandler's "grown ups" comedy eleganza(and that is so bad!)..there is nothing new, there is nothing sexy, there is nothing groundbreaking, it's just..a.. plastic bag drifting through the wind ..:/
Part Of Me is still one of my favorite music videos of hers. The whole woman in the Army angle was honestly really creative and had me rewatching the video. Not to mention, she cut her hair as the same length during the Witness rollout and the song was a #1 hit.

I honestly was once a big fan of Katy Perry at the beginning of my high school years. But the older I got the more disconnected I felt. I honestly could not relate anymore.
I started gravitating towards artists such as Rihanna because Rihanna made songs that I still relate to this day, whether I'm in the streets or in the sheets.

I think Katy is in her recovery era with Smile, is like Joanne by Gaga, Bedtime Stories by Madonna or Christina´s Lotus, a more relax, light and head down project that popstars release after the hate train they go trought in their "Flop" era. Witness, ARTPOP, Erotica and Bionic have something in common: an excelent and experimental album that is way ahead of its time and is sabotage and misinterpreted at its time. Herstory repeats herself, Chromatica, Ray of light and Liberation were acclaimed works that Gaga, Madonna and Christina released after their recovery era when they were ready. Katy is a talented artist, she is gonna recover.
Simple, evolve or perish, that's what happened to her, she may had changed her music, but her image was always this cartoon-ish, colourful, bubble gum pop, and she got stuck in that.
That's who she is though. Her music was everywhere, now he's gathering it; putting it together. Unfortunately, this means you don't like her, you just loved her appearance.

I must say.
I really like the album, it’s a new era for her and nothing we have really heard from her. But I do feel like it is very 2020 and I’m not sure if it’s gonna have the same impact as Teenage Dream, I don’t mean as in the singles being sky High because at the end of the day, that doesn’t matter. I don’t know if it has the longevity and timelessness that teenage dream has, which is important but it’s okay.
We’ve had our bops and our party anthems and our break up jams, but since witness to now, it feels so much more personal,
Which is why I think I like them both (Smile & Witness) more then Prism, Teenage Dream & one of the boys.
I just know this is gonna be slept on and I hate that.
But at the end of the day,
She is a great writer, singer and influencer.

The problem with her is that she’s stuck in the image of clowning and always trying to be fun and childish on her videos, people just got tired of that, she needs to evolve, musically she still hasn’t found her style where she feels comfortable, she should be back to similar music to teenage dream era but without the clownery on her videos

And she is literally putting out pure pop that’s exactly what teenage dream is! She did evolve into witness with totally different sounds and people started shitting on her.

Aaliyah Foster all of her music videos have playful parts some more subtle then others. The only music video she went full parody on was swish swish and that was back in 2017. And obviously people like those types of music videos because otherwise she wouldn’t be the most viewed female artist on the platform lol. And she always has a good representation of the songs in her videos she is one of the only artists that is always telling a story visually
This era, especially after hearing Smile, reminded me of Madonna’s Bedtime Stories era in 1994. Her singles, besides Take a Bow, didn’t perform that well, but after doing different projects and becoming a mother, Madonna re-emerged with Ray of Light in 1998. I think Katy has something similar coming in the next 5 yrs or so, but I think this era isnt meant to be so iconic, especially as she’s prepping to be a mom.
Hmm Madonna was still moderately successful in the mid 90s, though. She had a top 10 hit every year if I’m not mistaken (secret, you’ll see, etc). Katy, on the other hand, has fallen off precipitously. Everything she puts out flops. It’s weird to watch

Which is why she has had such a few few years. I could tell she wanted to break away from her usually sound. She had such a fun pop dance upbeat sound in the beginning her career. Meaning it's going to be played by clubs, people at home getting ready to go to the club and generic wedding receptions. So when she began to make different types of music. It's not going to have the same sky-high success as her early work. Labels get anxious and force her back into a box. Which is when we get songs that a catchy but forgettable. I am a fan of her new music. Even if it has the same sound or meaning to previous music. She seems fully engaged and happy with what she is doing.

I've talked with friends about why it seems Katy never seemed to bounce back to the same point in the industry she used to be in and this is definitely the best way I've heard it articulated: I've always loved that she hasn't taken herself too seriously, but to a point, it went from being quirky and fun to being gimmicky to a point of taking away from the art. She's incredibly talented, but I agree, she needs a fresh sound and GOD her record label needs to do a better job of promoting her stuff. She's always out there promoting things even while pregnant, but Capitol is doing her DIRTY

When she changed her image and sound in Witness, everyone came for her and started the 2017 Katy hate train say they didn't like this "new Katy", and how she should go back to the old black haired Katy with the bubble gum pop sound etc..and now that she is kind of bringing back that old Katy vibe but in a new and fresh way, ppl are not taking her seriously and saying her music is repetitive and her artistry isn't evolving..so at this point at seems that the public just can't be satisfied with she brings to the table. She'll always be ridiculed by a group of people no matter what she did cuz ppl just won't let go of the 2017 Witness hate trend and still want to find reasons to hate on her no matter what she does.

But she said this album is about resilience, and hope. It was a response to how people treated her during the Witness era. She said she only writes empowerment songs when she is going through dark times as a reminder that she always gets through it. I feel like those are her type of signature songs and I love when artist write about something currently going on in their life instead of generic stuff the artist can’t relate too. Even if at the time you don’t need this type of message just think she makes these songs so you can make them your own and I feel like telling someone how important they’re and that they are loved and can do anything they put their mind too will never be a boring message because someone always needs to hear it and we need that type of message in the world more than ever.
When Katy brought songs that didn't even touch the whole "knock me down, I'll build myself back up" the general public attacked her, made her depressed and insisted they wanted the "firework katy" back. Well, she's back now, but now they want her to talk about different stuff. It's really impossible to please people.
When are you going to understand that music career is not just about fame or being on top of all the charts? Like everyone she has a life and a unique art to express like Gaga, she is not obliged to please you by singing the same thing as always without feeling comfortable. People change, and she is not the only artist that you should be seeing your new moment. Where's Britney now? And Christina? And Madonna herself? And Mariah? Girl, everyone has their time, just appreciate that what she delivered before is gone and that person no longer exists.

I disagree with you Zach! Smile is totally different than her other albums and she is talking about going through the darkest part of her life and coming through it even stronger. It is NOT the same as witness, prism, or teenage dream. BUT it still has great messages and BOPs. It’s people like you that criticize her which makes viewers not want to listen to her and then think her music is not good, when all she is trying to do is share her message and uplift people at the same time. Listen to her new album with an open mind and don’t be too critical. I’m still so shocked that she hasn’t had a Grammy yet even though she has changed the music industry in so many ways. “Witness” was definitely mishandled, but full of brilliance throughout. She was working on the right track- but drama overshadowed the music and intent. Thus, the album didn’t connect and perform well and people just wrote it off as ‘she’s over’. I’m not sure if her career will ever comeback to where she was, but I’m definitely excited to what else she’s doing.

Being a KatyCat since the Teenage Dream era, I completely understand why occasional listeners might be a little unresponsive to her music. Her first three albums (One of the Boys, Teenager Dream & Prism) all brought something different to the pop genre, all even sounding drastically different from each other. Now with Witness, everything just honestly became a mess. The official singles didn't fully show how amazing Witness truly was and that's what made it "flop." Any other songs could have been singles from Witness, as the rest of the album is ten times better than the singles. If these simple things could have been changed, I feel like that era would've been more successful. I'm excited for Smile and for what's to come, but the song itself just seems as if it's Roar 2.0. I think Katy just needs to take a minute and look over her entire discography and just make a drastic change in her sound. She was able to do it with Teenage Dream and I hope she can do it again. From what I've seen Never Really Over and 365 have been the best songs shes recently released and I wish that's what the album sounds like. Still going to love the album, but I truly wish Katy would take a RISK with her music.
