Bonjour .

I know the cellist, Mr Blees, personally. He is now an about 80 year-old man, but he still plays the violoncello wonderfully. Because of this, I call him "The old man and the cello". I would like to hear more music played by him. Thank you for sharing this music.

I have the original Vox recording of him playing the Danzi as well as the CM von Weber Grand Potpourri. I've loved that record since I was a kid. So glad he's still playing! I think he sounds wonderful. I also have a Vox record of concertos by Vivaldi and Leonardo Leo he did about the same time as the Danzi, also excellent.

Für mich wunderschöne Abendkonzerte, ein Füllhorn schönster Melodien und Empfindungen ergießt sich über den Höhrer. Reine Entspannung und Schönheit. Allgemeingültig, das ist Klassik als meine Empfindung !

Definitely an early romantic concerto! This is beyond the classical period style without a doubt. Love it!

Still has some Mozart in it a little bit. I would consider him like Beethoven. So late Classical opening doors to the Romantic.

It is. Doesn't sound too dissimilar to Kalkbrenner or Moscheles.

Excellent concerto! Danzi truly was a wonderful composer. And already 3 dislikes? What type of taste in classical music must a person have to dislike this concerto?

Anche Danzi fa parte del gruppo dei migliori musicisti che , con Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert e tanti altri fantastici artisti creano la rivoluzione romantica o seguono tale trasformazione.

As an Englishman, I'm supposed to be a fan of that other Cello Concerto in E minor (by Elgar), but I prefer this one. It's as memorable as Dvorak's Cello Concerto, and should be played more often. Danzi's La ci darem la Mano Variations for Cello and Orchestra is also a nice piece.

A fine concerto - but nowhere near the same league as the Elgar.

Elgar's is better for the sheer drama. This nice though. I'm English and I don't feel that I "must" like English music.

I truly liked that. We can notice in some moments different influences like Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin. About Beethoven, it's possible to listen timpani and flutes at the same time in chords of tension as we can notice in Beethoven classic way to compose. About Mozart, in some moments of the first movement, we can listen to a simple cello melody with the classic accompaniment of Mozart. I'm very happy to listen to this concerto because here in my country (Brazil) , the music is having bad days...

this guy was born quite early but has a style that is rather romantic. He died 1 yr before Beethoven (same yr as Schubert's death) and lives through the Haydn/Mozart Classical era most of his life so so his style is pretty advanced for that period!

Schubert actually died in 1828, a year after Beethoven.

What a spectacular work! I can't believe I discovered it just tonight! Parts of it feel like Mendelssohn's more famous violin concerto which was written many years later.

Altgough clearly this concerto was crossing the boundary between the classical and the romantic periods it is not quite yet fully in the Romantic period. Especially in the last movement one can still clearly hear the influence of Haydn.

    • @brianknapp8645
      @brianknapp8645 4 года назад

Does the last movement have to really dark and dramatic to make it a romantic concerto? I think not. In my opinion many of the composers from the early 19th century are labeled as late classical by some pretty ignorant music historians but they were actually early romantics. Danzi is a composer who transitioned to romanticism late in his life. Yes Danzi and many other composers used the romantic style long before 1830. Let's show these composers some respect and call them what they were: romantics.

@@brianknapp8645 i have quite a large collection of Danzi's music. He certaily was a great composer, but for me he was a man who stood with his feet in both the classical and romantic worlds, taping from both. Much of his muisc was clearly romantic, while others were clearly late classical. Take for example his symphonies. His last one is an excellent romantic symphony in the mode of Beethoven's first 2 symphonies. But his others are undeniably late classical. But why do we have to put a specific label around his neck? He was a genius of a transitional period in music when the classical period was coming to an end and romanticism starting to establish itself as the dominant force in music. For me, Danzi was neither a man the one or the other alone, but instead a genius of both eras. Sometime he deligjts with excellent late classical works, other time with excellent early romantic works, and other times a true mix of both worlds, like in this cello concerto. And that does not distract from his genius. Danzi was a true genius from this transition period in musical history, reflecting the change in music in his compositions. That is why I admire and enjoy his music so much.
