You are holding the iron on the Piezo substrate too long. If the piezo's temperature exceeds the curie temperature threshold for too long, the crystal starts to depolarize, losing its effective travel. This means you are degrading the max amplitude that your piezo will produce, while also degrading frequency response. Maximum time you should ever hold that unregulated soldering iron to that piezo is 2 seconds. Use tons of flux when soldering, I don't see any in the video, but flux will make your life so much better when soldering. It helps remove surface oxidation, spreads heat, and allows the solder to more easily flow into an area. If you don't have flux, get a simple flux pen off amazon. Source: I'm an EE

Hey thanks, that's a great tip. For those who are trying this at home, for sure find a way to use some flux. I didn't have any at the time, but it does make a world of difference.
What is the curie temperature in this context? I've never heard of that term before.

The Currie temperature threshold for piezoelectric materials describes the maximum temperature the material can withstand before its crystal lattice structure starts to depolarize. When they depolarize, their net displacement approaches zero as contraction and expansion of each of the individual structures may be in a random direction. Random orientations entail a net value approaching zero, displacement will cancel out if entropy is allowed to take hold.

to get solder to stick to the tricky wires and surfaces, get a tin of flux. use an ultra fine grit buffing cloth or contact paper (after using a lighter like you did) to get remaining coatings off and rough up the surface a little, and then apply a coating of flux, let it sit on the surface for a bit before soldering. it should have created micropits in the metal, allowing solder to fill the pits of the now clean metal, and bind to the area.

This is great, I love the new effects.
If I had more sway on social media, I would totally share, but I don't, I am a mere lurker.

    sweet.
exactly what i needed for my next project. diy, non convential hearing aid.
    Don't worry
my rooms by lab too. but so is the garage and kitchen and living room, backyard and bathroom.
    So
    i got a problem.

Hi can you help me? i'm trying to add L/R external mics to my cheap bluetooth bc headset. I have cancer in my ear, tinnitus and hearing loss. Normal in ear hearing aids aren't great for me, because i have other stuff goin' on. Due to need i am teaching myself electronics because i'm sure its only a matter of creating the cuircut. This is the first video that isn't just a hack or trying to sell me components. my specialist doctors laugh because they think my idea is impossible, but itsthe only way i can socialize and interact otherwise i'm the deaf guy in the room, lol, my inner ears are good but im deaf because of other stuff (chemo) . Everyone calls me the anomoly, cause 16 years ago they gave me 2 years to live. i have a cheap bluetooth bc headset from ebay that i want to take apart and add external mics that play through bc. help me build an anomoly?
