- We never thought we'd have the honor to keep the Eastern Indigo snake, but we just acquired a breeding group of them! Oh my gosh! We were also given a pair of a pure black snakes (no, not Mexican black kings!) that you'll also get to meet in this video!

I'm from the Southeast US, and I can confirm that, even in a place where everyone hates snakes, indigos have a great reputation. I know one family that actually thinks of them as a sign of good luck.
Same here! Indigo's have such a great reputation. They'll eat other snakes and are fantastic species to have around.
We don’t have indigos here but any black snake has a good reputation, people are usually talking about rat snakes but they don’t know the difference so rat snakes racers and any other black snakes are just “black snakes”
They eat venomous snakes, they are great to have around. Beautiful too!
On a side note, I wonder why us in the south east tend to hate snakes? Maybe it’s because of the history and our original European settlers also not liking snakes much at all? Idk but it’s kinda fun to think about 😅😊
People can't think they are that good if they are rare :( 😭 if you get my meaning.
I love how you add words round the snake, it gives them a personality ☺️
wow those are some beautiful snakes!
i cant wait to see little baby indigos in the future!
Wow, what stunning snakes! I absolutely love the black milk snakes. I've always loved Mexican black kings, so seeing another simular, but different snake is quite amazing!
I spent some time living on Sanibel Island where there is a big conservation effort going towards protecting and growing the population of these guys (shout out SCCF and CROW!). Story goes that they used to be mistaken for the Black Racerbacks which are aggressive so people would purposely hit any black snake with their cars or bikes. That decimated the indigo population on the island but now they’re coming back and people are getting better about respecting all nature while on island! :D
The Manitoba Canada U-Haul! The Narcisse Snake Dens have tens of thousands of red sided garter snakes that winter in huge dens and then come out in the spring to mate. It’s super cool
Wow, they are so beautiful!💚💜💚
The black king snake looks cool and similar to the eastern indigo but something about that full size head of the indigo makes it so special. Looks like a smaller and non-venomous version of the King Cobra.
I wish I could go to your store
That is really cool 😎
your the reason i love replies
love your vids
Yay!
Some1 is getting FIRED lol.
You can't own them in Georgia, as Georgia probit. You CAN own them in Florida, permit provided, so long as they are captive bred. They can also reach lengths of 8 to 9 feet.
How do you tell if a fish is gravid? A hardware store near me has an indoor koi pond and one of the fish look unusually round.
After hearing about how docile Indigos tend to be, I wanted one as my first snake...until I learned about how rare they are LOL
My first snake is gonna be a more accessible species instead
EDIT: Also watching snakes beg for food is SO CUTE! I love it when they do the bleleles!
youtube REALLY needs to do something about the bots
@@bruh3608 yeah it’s annoying
Their poops also smell horrible! I hear they are the smelliest snakes out there!
hard to go wrong with a ball python or a pair of garter snakes
What reptile are you thinking on getting now?
I'm lowkey shook that they didn't mention the iridescent rainbow these beautiful black snakes cast on their scales 😍 I saw the shine a few times in this video and it's breathtaking!
Have you seen them in person? They are amazing!
Ruining the perfect 100 likes 😈
Yea , they didn't mention the iridescence that they give off under bright light. They probably noticed it after they finished filming this video. 😂
I see that too.
that's one of my favorite things about Indigos. the iridescent shimmer, their black color and their temperament is usually really good. it also helps that they're not venomous. 🤣
No way! I love Eastern Indigo Snakes!! I am lucky enough to get to work with one at my job as one of our educational ambassadors. They are absolutely amazing animals. I'm so happy you guys are getting to work with them too!
Our Indigo is a 7 year old male and hes over 7ft long
I also am lucky in that same sense! Ours is an 8ft long female! Her mood can change a lot, the very young male we have is more docile but my god they are smart
I have never heard of a foraging toy for snakes. I’d love to see a video about that!
Check out Lori Torrini’s RUclips channel.
Lori T AND Creatures of Nightshade, a channel that isn’t very active but each video is a gem. I heard of Scarlett Nightshade through Clint’s reptiles in his video on dragon snakes. Scarlett was featured because she has successfully kept dragon snakes as well as owing a paradise flying snake. She has filmed her indigo and her false water cobra using feeding puzzles.
I'm so excited for this! I love snake training videos!!
Since the species is threatened, would it be possible for Snake Discovery to do conservation breeding (breeding for release to the wild)? I'm certain there are a ton of regulations for doing that, of course, but it would be super cool to maybe hear about what the process might look like if they ever decide/get the chance to do that.
I'd absolutely love love LOOVE to see this happen!!
I don't think there are a notable lack of captive bred Eastern Indigo snakes. Rather they're threatened in the wild by habitat destruction and fragmentation. That is you'd need viable habitat to release them in that doesn't already have a healthy population.
The biggest issue is that there isn’t much habitat left for them. Plus, (I haven’t seen the whole video but probably) they likely haven’t had the genetic testing, collection notes, and lineage notation needed for proper captive breeding for release
That’s a good idea!
@@grimmb3686 there is lineage noting as they are lab animals
“These are opportunistic eaters” Yeah, I had one for a few years and once while I was eating and handling him (which I NEVER did again after this) he stole my pork chop off my plate. XD
lol
Please tell me you named him Pork Chop afterwards.
oml lmao- thats a silly situation! i hope he was okay if it was a seasoned chop-
@@sayosweeti5757 it was seasoned and stuffed with apple chutney, but he digested it just fine! :)
@@Rob_Thorsman Ah that would have been perfect!
Mention that one of the indigos has more of a chestnut colored face made me think of potential names for them, especially the female who won't be breeding. Since Peanut came from the same home, why not go with a nut theme: Hazelnut, Chestnut, Cashew, Brazil, etc.
That's a great idea!!
Why not the archaic term for Brazil nut ? While some fervently insist it is crude, i find it more refined. Certainly, its a more classical way to refer to such a fruit. What a great name for a snake found most commonly in the southeast !
@@bbseal6174 the fact that you think they should call their snake a slur is extremely concerning, maybe do some reflection on why you think it's appropriate for a white person to call a snake n word toes.
@@beehill9780 I am Assyrian.
@@bbseal6174 What I'm saying is Ed and Emily are white, and the word is a slur used against black people by white people. It's not ok for them to say it.
Edit: if I am misunderstanding what you're saying and you're referring to a different name, please let me know and I can remove the comments, since if I'm wrong I don't want to be rude.
Down here in south Texas everyone knows what our indigo’s look like (more of a blue coloration in good light). I’ve caught many over the years and they are so chill, except for the musking lol. Most know to leave them alone and are considered to be a great snake to have in your property as they’ve been known to eat rattlesnakes as well.
i am from georgia and i swear i have literally never heard of them
Yeah, we have several on the ranches we work and they and the road runners are such friends, especially after the rattlesnake round-up changed the way rattlesnakes act down here
@@elizabethdee7590 right! not to mention the hogs impact on rattlers. Much more dangerous now when they won’t rattle as quickly to warn off everybody, hogs don’t care.
@@kcarter0265 Ah, I never thought about that, but it makes sense. The hogs around here are literally bulletproof, too. They tend to rub up on the trees and get covered with a sap that can actually deflect bullets when it hardens XD
@@elizabethdee7590 haha I have heard that one, I’ve seen quite a few hogs on game cameras eat or just kill rattlesnakes though. It’s wild.
They are threatened or endangered in Alabama too. Auburn University has a program where they are breeding and releasing them into the wild in a certain park to try to get the wild population back. Pretty awesome. Wish more places would do this with more endangered wildlife.
Would you be able to do a video on the lab setting for snakes? It seems your friend is doing some cool things with captive snakes and I'd love to learn more!
These are my absolute favorite species of snake! I am soooo happy you guys are going to be breeding them!
My family works with the conservation efforts of Eastern Indigos at the Birmingham Zoo in Alabama, so I've gotten to play with one. They are just incredible. Smart, big, mostly docile, and will eat rattlesnakes! I really hope you guys enjoy working with them.
Hello emily, how are you, love the videos! (I was first btw)
Bro chill
Hi
Hi
Lol I’m first
Ya
When I was a kid visiting a family friend in Florida, I discovered a huge 'black' snake wrapped around the fan of their AC. We called Animal Control and I was amazed at how long it was and how calm it was. Only now am I realizing it was one of these, they just told me it was a rat snake
If you were in northern Florida it could have been a black rat snake. They get huge too and are also colubrids so they look somewhat similar.
If you were anywhere else in Florida, it was almost certainly an indigo snake.
In northern Florida you can find both black rat snakes and indigos, but rat snakes are far more common.
It most likely was indeed a rat snake. Indigos do not typically like climbing. The behavior you are mentioning sounds like a ratsnake.
@@Annie_Annie__ it was south of Tampa so mid state?
@@safron2442 thanks! Either way it.was a very positive snake experience for me as a child

As soon as you said something about a solid black snake that wasn’t a MBK I immediately thought black milkSnake ! They’re my dream snake.
They actually start out looking like a typical colorful milkSnake. Then as they age they slowly darken until they go pitch black ! I want to raise a baby oneday. If I can find room for another enclosure, then if I can find a black milkSnake lol
Indigos are cool , just black milksnakes I am most excited for lol. I love them !
For sure one of the most underrated snakes out there. I just a nice baby male from my last show, ill be documenting his color change progression as well on my channel
I’ve got two black milks and they’re by far one of the best starter/low maintenance snakes out there. Super chill and amazing to work with!
@@joshuasummitt8893 I already have a California kingsnake and a Pueblan milkSnake. So I’m use to colubrids ! (And my cali king is super picky and a nightmare to work with…)
And I had an expo today , and I saw someone selling some baby black milk snakes and it was so tempting. But I couldn’t lol. I will for sure oneday
Have a group of 7, they are an amazing species to work with.
Back in the late 90s on the space coast in Florida, we used to find indigos often. Their rainbow iridescence is beautiful. So sad how rare they are now
Love the video! Love the bucket list species!
Eastern indigos have inbreeding problems because the number of captive specimens are limited. This has lead to decreased fertility and physical deformities in some snakes - including enlarged hearts and spinal deformities.
What are all these spams doing here?
@@but1913 I've seen a lot of spam on many channels these past few days.
@@isabelleblanchet3694 Same here, it's annoying
@@isabelleblanchet3694 Maybe if multiple people report multiple spam posts on each video, as they find them, RUclips will block them? I know they use multiple usernames, but here's hoping... 🦎🐍
@@melissajarvis4829 I scroll down the comments and report all of them when I see them.
The first time I got to see an indigo was at the Oatland Wildlife Center in Georgia. I instantly fell in love. Great addition to the zoo and your program!
Eastern Indigos are also illegal to be kept in AL without proper permits. And Auburn University has an Eastern Indigo reintroduction project that they have been working on trying to increase the wild population by releasing captive bred babues/subadults
I know this is kind of off topic. I’m babysitting a class pet veiled chameleon for winter break and it really does not have much of a habitat in its cage. Should I try and talk to the teacher about maybe not having it has a class pet or maybe let me keep her and give her a more chill environment?
You could also suggest a kind of an upgrade of the enclosure to the teacher. It could be a pretty cool learning experience paired with teaching about the natural habitat of chameleons 😊 so the little guy gets more places to explore, hide and play with!
For a while in high school, I was showing up at teacher’s rooms to upgrade the bettas that students bought teachers, as well as doing their water tests and changes. You might be able to convince the teacher to set up something better-I didn’t keep any of the bettas, but I got them into properly heated, filtered, decently sized tanks. In fact, teachers who stopped keeping pets were willing to donate some of their old things, so I didn’t have to purchase much.
I just got home from picking up my first snake!! His name is Apollo, a baby woma python. Also these snakes are beautiful!!!!
Awesome choice
Omgg great snake and name. I wish you the best!!
congrats on your new snake!
Congratulations! I love woma pythons!
Since Shiny Rayquaza is black you should name one Rayquaza!
It’s a good thing you have staff now ‘cause that’s a LOT OF POOP! Mine used to paint his walls on a regular basis. Extra stinky too, especially when he had been eating fish! :) Enjoy them, this species is so special. Mine was named Grendel, I vote for one of the boys to be named Grendel too!
It's so crazy to think that almost all milksnakes in captivity are from ONE female. That's so mind-blowing, I've been thinking about that for several minutes now.
Hi Emily and Ed y’all are one of my favorite RUclipsrs I have been watching your Chanel for like 3 years you guys have Taught me so much information about reptiles, thank you for helping when I need to know about reptiles.p.s keep up the great work 🥰🥰
Can I just say: Ed’s hair looks great!!! Cool snakes an congrats on your zoo. I’ve been here for a while and getting to see your journey has been awesome. Love you guys!
They are SO pretty, I love the variation in chin colours! Will you be putting more than one in the zoo enclosure or do they have to be kept separately? It would be so cool to be able to see one with a red chin next to the white-chinned one!
They’re opportunistic feeders so if one is bigger than the other, it will quite possibly become a meal!
@@43ShaDey aw thats a shame lol
As each was removed from their bag, "damn, that's a gorgeous snake" was my reaction to each.
Great additions guys.
ooooh, so exciting! I'm interested to learn how the foraging toy experiment goes, that always seemed like really good enrichment for reptiles
They are beautiful and I can't wait for their amazing babies in the future. More then that thank you for always being open about flaws with animals and how careful you are with the breeding.
I’m glad Peanut’s OG owner got to see how he has been cared for, I’m sure they feel confident these big babies are in the safest home they could be in
I've been fascinated by Eastern indigos after learning their reputation for being one of the smartest species of snakes, right up there with king cobras. And from how they act in this video, they do seem to have the same kind of active awareness, but without the tension and extreme danger of a highly venomous, reactive cobra. I bet they're really going to show some variation in personality and be an absolute joy to work with! I would say they're my dream/bucket list species but... there's that whole thing with the startling quantities of extremely noxious, sloppy poo to contend with, and I don't have employees that I can ask to clean out the enclosures...soooo an indigo probay will not be in my future. Anyway, I look forward to more videos featuring those beautiful noodle babies!
I am super interested in what these snakes have been doing in the lab, and also this genetic work. I'm so curious!
Also fun fact. I love snakes. Have since I was 10 and started watching the croc hunter. But sometimes I have nightmares that I own a snake and it's gotten loose. It's not like I've never held a snake either! One of my best college memories was holding two baby snakes (probably corns?). Dunno why I would have nightmares about them, but the human subconscious is weird.
Omg. My dream snake!!!! I live in Georgia and we can't keep them since they're native but would love to one day breed them to help wild populations.
Oooh, the first one has a holographic belly! How pretty!
Can you keep a Sunbeam snake next time? They have glowy rainbow prism on their skales and looks GORGEOUS!
Love the Indigo snakes! Wish they bring good news forwards😊
Eastern Indigos are amazingly smart like cobras. You may want to use target training like with a monitor for feeding because of how food motivated they can be. The "brute force" style of killing is typically called bludgening. and many times they will injure themselves by banging and squishing their prey against rocks and trees so you should never feed them live prey as captive bred. They also mainly hunt snakes in the wild so do not put them together and be very careful when breeding as you may need to save them from each other. Because of that they also may have a tendency to try to eat themselves. For being very smart they do some dumb things as natural behavior. My brother used to be an Eastern Indigo breeder many years ago.
They're so gorgeous 🥰😍😍😍 got to hold a snake, a few months old ball python, for the first time ever a few days ago at a local pet shop, and how you described them really was exactly that🥰 can't wait to get my own 😍
Those are so pretty! I love learning about new reptiles. Love yall!
I couldn't imagine seeing one in person, they're so rare! I had no idea they were so large, I honestly thought they were a small species.
Also never seen black Milk Snakes! Congrats on your beautiful collection
Gosh, they are so gorgeous! And what a lovely temperament they have. The black milksnakes are super pretty and adorable, too.
So excited that you plan on trying those puzzle toys with the eastern indigos. I watched Blackjack (also an eastern indigo) from Creatures of Nightshade solve such a puzzle rather quickly and it was awesome to watch! Yours will surely love the challenge, too! :)
An idea for the name of the one w/ a reddish chin is Crowley, from Good Omens. (A demon who did not so much as Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards) His first form is a giant black snake w/ a red underside
Ahhhh
The mural in the back looks so good, even though it’s not done at the start

They are all so pretty! Will you be naming them? If so what theme? Anyway, congratulations on the fantastic acquisitions!

Oh my gosh, these are devastatingly beautiful animals! Not just in their incredible colouration, but there is something about the proportion and shaping of the head too, this is surely a snake to fall in love with. And with that temperament, they are an awesome ambassador animal, it is such a shame that they are so rare - I assume from being killed, rather than taken as pets (otherwise there would be a good population in captivity for breeders to work with).
They're natural habitat is being destroyed which is why they are dying. They use gopher tortoise burrows in the winter. The tortoise habitat is being destroyed therefore no place for the snake to go in the winter.

Those are beautiful snakes!
A very docile species....except for the pooping.....so much pooping.
A bucket list species for me (the Indigo), the price is a pretty serious bar to entry. I wish more people would breed these, so they'd be more available.
well there's also the inbreeding issue- hopefully the gene pool gets widened!
