    For those who don't know, The Nemesis system was patented so legally no other games can have it. There's a LOT of mechanics that's get patented by development studios so that only with their games can you have certain experiences

      And I am 100% sure that gameranx decided to left that out on purpose because "Hey! Loads of people will comment to our video if we don't mention that!"

    • @TobiasHarms
      @TobiasHarms 9 месяцев назад +29

      My opinion is that you really shouldn't be able to patent stuff like this. It's akin to rules of boardgames that you can't patent.
      I also think that similar to trademarks patents should be subjected to use it or lose it. And while we're at it let's include copyright in this. If your work isn't readily available, in print or streaming for instance, then you obviously don't find the work financially viable anymore and it should go back to the public domain. Copyright, not public domain, was intended to be the exception.

    • @echorises
      @echorises 9 месяцев назад +8

      @@TobiasHarms I think this only prevents the indie developers to develop similar systems due to the risk of being sued. If a large publisher decided to go for it, I'm sure they will have the lawyers that can work around the patent if they deem necessary.

    • @TobiasHarms
      @TobiasHarms 9 месяцев назад +5

      @@echorises yes probably. But that's another problem, as in the mobile phone industry it becomes a fee of entry keeping out smaller players. And the "lone inventor" isn't protected anyway since they can't go up against big companies lawyers. So it's not really helping anyone except the big guys to stay on top.
      In the 80s IBM accused Sun of patent infringement. Sun examined the patents in question and found that they were not applicable. IBM went "maybe but with all the patents we have, you're bound to be in conflict with a number of them".

      @@TobiasHarms I remember reading that EA wasn't even the first to do that sort of system anyway. I wish I knew which games had done it earlier though. I'm sure DF has a similar system but other than that I'm not sure.

There were many times where I was walking on a ceiling to get gems and completely forgot that I was upside-down until the gravity gauge started blinking. That feeling of disorienting yourself when you fall from a ceiling that you forgot you were walking on is absolutely breathtaking at suspending your disbelief instead of it just being some gimmick. When you shift gravity, it doesn't feel like you're flying, it feels like you're just falling but in a different direction. Easily one of the coolest mechanics I have ever seen in a video game.

    Other interesting mechanics:
    1) Shifting into vehicles (Driver San Francisco),i don't remember seeing this mechanic in other game.
    2) 2nd person camera (Driver San Francisco),you can do it only in a specific mission,but you are in 1st person camera,you look at the ,,npc" in front of you and you control it while you are in 1st person camera.
    3) AC Origins ( i think it's in Odyssey as well). The autopilot. You mount your horse or your camel,hold J to make it follow the road or make it go a reachable checkpoint (it won't swim by itself) or objective destination.
    4) Sid Meyer's Pirates,your character ages while the time goes by. (in Sifu you age as you die).
    5) Sleeping Dogs,putting people in trunks. Most of the games do this either in a cinematic or only in a main mission (Mafia 2 comes in my mind).But in Sleeping Dogs you can do it in free roam as well.
    6) Reversing the arrest,Sleeping Dogs,if you press space when the police tries to arrest you,you reverse the move and handcuff them instead :)) (usually,in the normal games you have to run so you don't get arrested.)
    7) Mafia 2,bribing the authorities (50 dollars when they want to arrest you,or 500 when they come for you guns blazing,obviously you have to make the call while being out of their sight).
    8) RDR2,the dead bodies that decay over time.
    9) Mad Max,the car's grapling hook used to tear the other cars doors,wheels,demolish constructions or pulling the driver out.
    10) Overwatch 2,depending on the characters chose by you and your team,they will have different dialogue about the lore.

    Need for speed underground 2 had a dyno tuner mechanic that was pretty cool for its time. Iv only played a handful of racing games so maybe this is a common mechanic but i have not seen it in any oturr need for speed game other than that specific one. This was also when online play just started.
    There was a glitch called the ECU goldbar glitch which when done correctly would give your little 700+ HP car like 2000 and everyone online did this to the point that if you didnt glitch the hell out of your car you simply couldnt keep up.
    There was also a freeroam glitch we called the bellevista glitch. You would go to the left side of the map, turn around, lift up the right side of your car via hydraulics and push towards the barrier as you drop diagonally along it and it allowed you to free roam the map without a time limit so you could do whatever you wanted no time limit to worry about. I spent countless hours doing this. You would find a circuit race called "bellevista" and ask if their glitching it sometimes they did sometimes they actually just wanted to for real race.

    Another amazing mechanic is Skyrim’s seemless dual casting system. Even the ability to hold different one handed weapons, or cast with one hand while swinging a one handed weapon in the other along with the satisfaction of the Dragonborn Powers throughout it all. Absolutely ahead of its time!
    Prince of Persia with the time control looped with satisfying parkour, or Dying Light’s 1st-Person parkour with combat techniques and slo-mo mechanics during brutal and gritty finishers and dismemberment with the Grappling Hook!? Or even Warframe’s mechanics where you wield two guns, a melee along with a bunch on different melee stances and fighting styles while jumping wall to wall with slo-mo movements while aiming mid-air which compliments the parkour further to make for some interesting mid-air combos. I mean the list goes on and on for cool mechanics that should easily overshadow half this list imo.

    One thing almost NO ONE talks about is the moral point system in the Metro trilogy. It is much more subtle than it's RDR2 counterpart, and the way it works adds to the immersion masterfully.
    In Metro 2033, Artyom (protagonist) has never left his home before and doesn't know how the world outside his station works. So the moral points are gained via exploring the levels and finding secret spots, as well as being as much pacifist as possible.
    In Metro Last Light and Exodus, Artyom has gained much knowledge about the world outside, and it's all about making the morally correct decisions.

    I love that you picked Ghost of Tsushima for this list, but if you were going to highlight just one mechanic, the standoff mechanic would have been my choice. Or the ghost mechanic where the screen turns black and white and every enemy becomes terrified of you. You know, where you literally become the titular ghost and slaughter everyone in one shot?

    Two things:
    1) Is the Gravity Gun (Zero-Point Energy Manipulator if you will) from HL2 too overqualified to even be on this list or did you guys just forget? Because I think that thing was unanimous in blowing all our heads to the stratosphere. Sure, one may argue that it is more of a weapon than a mechanic, but do recall that a big part of Valve's intention for developing the Source engine was for the benefit of the Gravity Gun, and they created the game with it as the star of the show.
    2) The wall-walking from the original Prey deserves at least an honorable mention. I couldn't play the game for more than half an hour at the time because of how queasy it felt BUT it made for some really interesting encounters and puzzle solving.
