I’d agree that chemistry major is pretty future proof. If you like working in a lab, it could be a great career! Do yourself a favor - do undergrad research and internships. Having that experience will help you land an entry-level job with just a bachelor’s degree.
Biology majors are pretty saturated... I had 1200 students majoring in bio, compared to 300 majoring in chemistry. So there is that!

@@ahmadbahja8341 I think it all depends. With Biochemistry degrees, it would be important to look at curriculum. Colleges/universities might have a major called "biochemistry", but curriculum might differ. Biochem has fewer Math/Physical Chem classes, while has more BIO classes(Genetics/Cell bio), which (if you think about it) prepares you well for pharmacy track. You can also work as a research assistant with a bachelor's degree. You can consider doing Chem major and BIO minor too... Start talking to faculty at your colleges about opportunities for undergrad research. Are you in college or still in high school?

Hey Shane, first off, congrats on getting over 100K subs; well deserved. Secondly, thanks for doing a video on my majors; I have a BS and MS in chemistry. I have to say that I agree. It's a hard major, but not a lot, if any, flexibility in the job market. A lot of lab jobs actually in biological or life science type companies (e.g. medicine and drug related fields), then oil and power, followed next behind mining and/or minerals; in my opinion, of course. The vast majority of jobs were education related; I guess a lot of folks want to pass organic chemistry for med school probably. After those fields, you have the outliers like the legal field for intellectual property. Unfortunately, you are correct in probably needing a second degree(s) or some sort of certification(s) or licence(s). Definitely a fun time in school labs getting the degrees, but a headache in the work force. Keep up the great content. BK

I am currently trying to choose what I want to major in and it is a really tough decision for me to do. I really like chemistry and am thinking about going into chemistry but I just don’t really know what career I would want to go in (salary and demand is also taken into account). I also like physics but I’m simply not sure if I would like it as much as if I went into chemistry. Between experimental and theoretical physicist I would rather do experimental but I am not sure what type of work they do. I am also thinking of going into biochemistry but the problem is I’m not too fond of biology simply because what I’ve done in it so far has been a lot of work where you memorize the names of different things and less hands on research work. But careers in like pharmacology or genetics do interest me. Plus, working in the space industry is something I would love to do.
It’s very hard for me to make a definitive choice since I am interested in many different things. What I do know is working in research/labs or working in the space industry are both options I would really enjoy, I simply don’t know what career/major to choose. Help.

Couldn’t agree more with all of the information presented here. Unfortunately, in science, especially at the graduate level, one’s skillset becomes so specialized in a particular field, that it becomes so tough to shift to a different career. Moreover, in fields like chemistry, while some skills are in demand, they’re also in very high supply because of overlapping skills with people in related disciplines e.g. biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics.

Im currently a student studying chemistry at college/university and I can tell you it's very difficult!
There are alot of maths , like alot.
Lab work is not fun like they seem in breaking bad , oh man I wish it was. Experiments are tedious and boring. This is just for me personally, i personally am not a fan of math and I honestly wish I had picked a degree related to biology as learning about anatomy and physiology is so intriguing to want to learn. This is what I feel I'm lacking chemistry , the content is pretty bland compared to biology.
However , this is just my opinion, my advice would be to do ALOT of research and pick a subject you wouldn't mind working very hard to excel in as in university/college is very independent.
      Hope this helped.

As a Chemist, I can say that the main reason people with Chem/Biochemistry degrees can’t get a job with just a bachelors is for two reasons.
    1. No internships or Research in undergrad
    2. Didn’t use Staffing companies or recruiters
Most Chemistry/Biochemistry jobs at the lower level can only be attained through point number 2 as stated above.
The reason companies do this is because they’re not going to spend a lot of money paying for benefits investing in entry level candidates who may just leave for the next higher paying job. Training a very good chemists on the instruments & data analysis for each instrument can take up to 6+ months for the average person. A really good chemist can probably get it done in about 4 months if the training is really good.
So they only hire through staffing companies or recruiters for most (80-90%) entry level jobs in this field. After i had ~2 years experience thousands of other jobs opened up.
Also I would NOT recommend a Masters in Chemistry or Biochemistry because once you have enough experience with a Bachelors you’ll be on the same playing field as the person with a Masters.
Only graduate degree worth getting in the Chemistry/Biochemistry field is a Ph.D but if you go that route you better really really love chemistry.

Water quality is far from the least of it, and many concerns, pro-actively before product release, and retroactively after remediable action is needed, could be assisted by new generations of chemistry experts. More government insistence that testing be done on the myriad of chemical substances among us would help health and jobs.
