My Vietnamese nail tech and I became close friends. She actually introduced hubby and I as her brother and sister. She fixed dinner for us once. We were also the ony customers invited to an employee dinner at the salon. The owners also gave us Christmas gifts each year. My nail tech and I also exchanged birthday gifts. She even asked permission to measure me for traditional Vietnamese clothing she planned to buy for me during her trip home to visit family. Many of the ladies in the shop had husbands who worked for the same defense contractor as mine. We bonded we them over that and the fact hubby's niece married a man who is Vietnamese. When everyone at the shop saw a photo of their daughter, they called her "Blackanese (Black Vietnamese). Whenever the owner's catered a meal for the employees, they'd call hubby and I and invite us to stop by the salon to grab a takeout plate. They made us like one of them.

You have an excellent and sweet attitude. It can be difficult to not offend others when we delve into doing accents, etc. I'm African-American & have lived in both California & Vietnam so I know that her accent & showing the friendliness of the Nail Salon ladies was spot-on!
I didn't laugh at the people but at the accuracy of the accent & attitude. Anyone who knows Vietnamese people in depth has to admire your good points: family loyalty, fun loving, loving to laugh, great culinary heritage, great at goal setting & reaching goals, loving your own culture. Those values are wonderful for everyone to adopt. 😊💐💐

Hi Van, I just picked up your notification & this is so funny I laughed all through it because it is "spot on" with my experiences in Melbourne, Australia. As a 65-72yo I have been going to different Vietnamese salons & massage shops, the best regular one for my haircut & sometimes pedicure, and allow myself to be upsold when I have time for more pampering. The Vietnamese young ladies are so funny with their enquiring chat which I love to play up to. I hope after lockdown these businesses open up again, because they are quite cheap too.

Thank you for showing the World (especially the US) how to enjoy (and not get triggered by) a great video (even 15 years later) that addresses cultural nuances. The Vietnamese (and most Asians BTW) are very warm and embracing. They bridge the cultural divide quickly and do not seem to be burdened by the differences. This is how the World should be!

I lived in Vietnam for 6 years. One of the things I love most is that Vietnamese people have a great sense of humor. I never had to worry about being accused of cultural appropriation if I wore an Ao Dai, or being accused of racism if I poked fun at some of the things I found funny about Vietnamese culture. Now I'm looking for a new country to live in and explore, but Vietnam feels like home. If I had to choose between living in the US or Vietnam for the rest of my life, I'd choose Vietnam for sure!

@@MeowTX Exactly. Though I do have to say, in my experience, Vietnamese people are probably not judged as harshly, or spoken negatively about as often as "some other countries." Sometimes when people are easily offended, it's because they've delt with too many people trash talking their country. Similarly, the Vietnamese people in really touristy areas are less tolerant of foreigners than Vietnamese people where there are few, if any, tourists, because they've had to deal with too many shitty tourists.

I went to an Anjelah Johnson just for this routine. Hilarious.
In an interview, Anjelah said she sometimes did not do this routine for all her stand-ups for personal and professional reasons. One time some women went up to Anjelah after her show and told Anjelah how upset they were for driving from many miles away just to hear her Vietnamese nails routine and missing out on it. After that, Anjelah realized that the show is really about her fans and the audience and no matter how tired she is of doing that routine, she will always do it for her loyal fans.
Anjelah gets it. The rest of her routine is just average, but as a comedian if you have only one really good bullet in your gun, this is a great bullet to have. She can retire rich on one routine. Most comedians don’t even have one good bullet. Good for her.
