Yeah, I forgot about that little thing. I remember the interview with Brandy who was 15 , I think. At that age children still very much echo their parents opinions even though they start forming their own opinions. The adult interview was kind of leading her criticizing Aaliyah’s attire and asking Brandy would her parents let her wear that, to which of course she replied no. Aaliyah was classy enough to not let that get any further. However, Aaliyah’s music was grown, and her look not acceptable for her age by a lot of people at that time. Black middle class people were a lot more conservative then. Nowadays her attire looks super safe. But I was older than her at the time and I was not allowed to sing lyrics like that when they came on the radio, and I just plain ol’ knew better. I still don’t know why the adults, especially in the music industry, were so shocked about her and R. Kelly. The mess was obvious, and even as a kid I couldn’t believe her parents would let her sing that song “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number” and I was stunned to find out her uncle owned the record label. I remember that Video Soul interview where her and R. Kelly were dressed like twins talking about being best friends. I was floored, I was a few years older and absolutely know my father would never go for that. Back then we dressed alike with our crew of girlfriends, but male and female only did that if they were a couple. No guy wanted to dress like his girl homie, for fear of being confused with her boyfriend. Boys never want that unless they want her. Poor babygirl was not protected and thrown to the wolves.
Notice how they pit successful black women (one light skinned, one dark skinned) against each other? Hasnt changed. So sad. Both are beautiful and powerful people. Hope this is a lesson for us when we have the colorism convo.

When it's with black women it does seem like its the light skinned girl vs. the dark skinned girl which is a very different set of politics than two white women. Like the Naomi Campbell and Tyra thing played out that way. The industry pit them against each other and Naomi fed into it as a result. I honestly think it alienated Tyra and I'm sure it influenced her decision to give up on high fashion. Like with black women it seems like internalized racism and colorism comes into play in addition to the misogyny and sexism that comes with forcing women to compete.

Yeah, I forgot about that little thing. I remember the interview with Brandy who was 15 , I think. At that age children still very much echo their parents opinions even though they start forming their own opinions. The adult interview was kind of leading her criticizing Aaliyah’s attire and asking Brandy would her parents let her wear that, to which of course she replied no. Aaliyah was classy enough to not let that get any further. However, Aaliyah’s music was grown, and her look not acceptable for her age by a lot of people at that time. Black middle class people were a lot more conservative then. Nowadays her attire looks super safe. But I was older than her at the time and I was not allowed to sing lyrics like that when they came on the radio, and I just plain ol’ knew better. I still don’t know why the adults, especially in the music industry, were so shocked about her and R. Kelly. The mess was obvious, and even as a kid I couldn’t believe her parents would let her sing that song “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number” and I was stunned to find out her uncle owned the record label. I remember that Video Soul interview where her and R. Kelly were dressed like twins talking about being best friends. I was floored, I was a few years older and absolutely know my father would never go for that. Back then we dressed alike with our crew of girlfriends, but male and female only did that if they were a couple. No guy wanted to dress like his girl homie, for fear of being confused with her boyfriend. Boys never want that unless they want her. Poor babygirl was not protected and thrown to the wolves.

When it's with black women it does seem like its the light skinned girl vs. the dark skinned girl which is a very different set of politics than two white women. Like the Naomi Campbell and Tyra thing played out that way. The industry pit them against each other and Naomi fed into it as a result. I honestly think it alienated Tyra and I'm sure it influenced her decision to give up on high fashion. Like with black women it seems like internalized racism and colorism comes into play in addition to the misogyny and sexism that comes with forcing women to compete.
