Just found out about this machine today and found one for sale complete at a very good price! I’m super excited to try it out (: Just a tip- I’ve heard from others that if you don’t use a correct dc cable, it is super easy to burn out the machine. Use the right cable!
Nice video. I have had one for years and I actually use it all the time. Great fun and it's quite useful in the studio. I'll keep it till it stops working and then I'll find another one. Cheers
I've had one since they came out and I recall spending $499 for it. I agree that it's an amazing drum machine. I've used it live, in the studio, practicing and song-writing. It's never failed me...but, I have been looking at current (new) drum machines anticipating that someday I may need to replace the DR880...but, there's nothing out there like this now. Maybe the Alesis SR-18 might be close. I had an Alesis SR-16 before I bought the DR880...the SR-16 was ok, but nowhere near the flexibility and sound quality of the DR880. All of the other newer drum machines out there seem to be way overkill for rock, folk and blues styles as far as what a person needs to do to program it. Anyway, there's tons of styles and flexibility in the DR880...and it's very straightforward to use! My 2 cents...lol !!
I think there would be a market for a Song based 'Band' machine.Selling for a novelty value at least. I use it as a rest from a computer and as a sketchbook.
Thanks for an actual honest review of this hidden gem of a drum machine with guitar and bass jam along capabilities. It can send the bass part and drum parts out (to external MIDI gear) with your choice of MIDI channel, but by default ch 2 and 10. The guitar amp is pretty good, a subset of the COSM GT pedal. It also supports bass guitar but only has 10 presets for bass, and maybe 40 for guitar. Plenty for me. While people these days are used to entering/tapping beats by hand (and you can do that with the dr880) ... this machine really designed (imho) as a PATTERN based drum machine ... and just about every kind of beat pattern is already in there and basically you string together songs by taking these patterns (like 500, another 500 user), picking the appropriate drum kit (there are 100 plus 100 user kits) and then copy the patterns to the correct number measures and string together these segments into songs. And you can save a lot of songs and name them whatever. So while these have pads for traditional hand drumming, I don't think its best for that. Is the pattern and build actual songs instead. If you want to add fills and intros and outros ... it has tons of those also. I think the key is you don't have to tap them in yourself, as they are already there. You can also do a lot with quantization. You can then apply ghost notes and probability to the beats to make them even more realistic and less robotic. I think the tough part is doing all this without a computer, but I could see a one man band could put together all your songs into this unit and then play along with great success. These are widely available used anymore for 250-300 USD. The proaudioexp tutorial for $30 is the best way to learn this in a day or two. I got the online version. My understanding is the USB capabilities may be a bit limited. Sure, fine for capturing MIDI sysex and doing firmware updates ... but I'm not sure there is good software to use the 880 that works with todays operating systems. One of my long term goals is to program a collection of my bands songs into the 880 so I can then jam along/practice anytime I want, even in the old folks home someday.
I have the Boss DR-5 and for me it is the best. It has drum track, bass track, guitar track and piano track (with many more instruments available). All the sounds are really nice and you can pick whichever instrument you want for each track except the drum track I believe. You can construct entire songs with the patterns you create, so an intro, part A, part B, etc. Though creating songs with different parts is more tedious than on the computer it isn´t that bad and you can have complete backing tracks to play along with. You can also use a footswitch to change between patterns if you want to improvise for a while on just one part before moving on to the next. If you are familiar with a fretboard you can set the buttons on guitar mode which mimics the layout of the standard fretboard and so it is easier to find notes when programming the instrument tracks. This is an OLD device but I still see them online second hand sometimes. One thing to be careful about is that, like many devices as they get older, the jog wheel can get a bit glitchy. Cleaning it can help but sometimes it involves taking the unit apart so that is something you definitely should check if you are picking one up second hand.
From this angle it looks like you're teaching a '90s accounting class and it's a weird calculator. I wish it could take an SRX expansion card. I think this is using the same sounds as the XV-5080, which is when Roland was all about COSM modeling and they've got a ton of great guitar/bass/EP sounds, and good punchy rock drums, and some epic Star Trek-like pads ... but it really helps to get the SRX-05 Supreme Dance card if you want synth sounds.
I got this around 2010, I have an SR18, Alesis Strikepad and a Roland Fantom, but the DR880 is still my meat and potatoes. For ease of use and sound quality it's unsurpassed. But then again I am a bit of a Boss Gear Slut. BTW the Ibanez Pentatone is fucking AWESOME. Oh and the Epiphone Jerry Cantrell is BANGING....
@kevinb5799 You should be able to get that sound. It has many Rock presets. You might need to beef up the drums with a software etc. The drums are kinda thin or flat but the machine has a lot of patterns.
Useless tuition ,for instance if you are a bass player how do you use it when you plug in your instrument? The guys showed you some sounds but the vitals of interfacing with your instrument was sadly missing so a stillborn sttempt on how not to make a tuition video for a giitarist or bassist
I had this since it was introduced. Its a great practice tool for bass and guitar. Still holds its value after almost 18 years.
Bought one on eBay recently. Works well in front of a looper and/or sampler. My setup is a DR-880 > RC-202 > SP-404
I love how this machine still keeps my brain amused.Thank you.

I love this machine. If i need realistic drums this is my first stop.
It is a fantastic effects unit too. I doubt i will ever sell mine.

I wanted one of these back in the day but never got round to it.
@gordon9177 Yes I never see them in second hand places out and about.
2004 release date; awesome machine. Love the “fill” menu…

I ordered one. I just wanted an easy to use drum machine to go with my sampler.
Groovy!
My uncle gave me one of these for free it's awesome
Glad to see you guys. Rest up if you need it though!
What the hell are you taking about!?
@@michaelanzelino5068 keep up, Mickey. The boys had been poorly.
How do you hook it up to a mixer (M1610) ?
You just plug the outputs into the inputs of the mixer.
Can you use this as a looper?
no, it has no recording or sampling capabilities
Can it be used on commander in a live setting to play fills?
Not sure, I know the alesis sr16 can a friend used one in a duo like this for years
Now I have to upgrade my 670 to 880
How much better is it compared to a DR-870
Did you mean a DR770?
@@takethefearoutthegear6229 no I mean 670
The one that I'm using in some of the shorts I've posted on my channel
@@JasonMontell2501 will have a look

550.00 new from musicians friend
I paid $312.00 for the drum machine in 2010 brand new.
The best? Come on guys! 😂

Can always add a mixer or audio interface
Just plug your bass into the front, the manual explains it in detail, we have just done a basic overview of the drum machine
Why so much talking in slo mo
Why TALK about the sounds
WHY NOT JUST PLAY THE BLOODY THING INSTEAD OF TALKING ANOUT IT
WHAT A BLOODY WASTE OF TIME
We will try and do another video with more sounds for you, thanks for bringing it to our attention
? What? Not the greatest drum machine. No.
Hey, who knew Derek And Clive survived the 80’s and grew up to do musical instrument reviews?
