    ** Edit to Video ** - After shooting this, the race spoiler and carry bag are no longer included with the standard solid versions of the SR-10. They will come stock with the graphics though.

      Have anyone had issue of hitting the tab for the chin ventilation in stead of the visor tab to open the visor? I can see that being an issue if you miss while at speed.

      @RevZilla  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@Roy_Godiksen It definitely takes getting used to in order to get the tab each time, thats for sure. That trigger release for the shield is stout too, lifting the shield won't release it no matter how hard you pull on it, you have to use the release tab like Astars intended. Not really an issue at higher speeds (usually thats not when you are in a rush to open / close it), but if you want some air at a traffic light you just need to make sure to get the tab to to open it.

Big selling points for me are Carbon, weight, quietness, the visor detents and speaker pockets. Tried em on at Revzilla Newport Beach today, visors are pretty sketchy to change, (see 11:10 ) you have to line up the little red moving detent piece w lens pin so there are 2 things per side that have to be stabbed in harmony and the red detent clicker moves on you down VERY easily. Like he says youll need a toothpick or tiny allen wrench.. etc; to keep the red detent piece it in its proper place as you install the lens. Almost a deal breaker pita! I wouldnt be surprised if Astars redesigns it early lifecycle. A clear lens makes it easier to see the lens pin/red detent that falls down out of place until you get used ti dealing w it i guess. If the Bell Star carbon had individual detents between open/closed I would just stick w Bell but bc they wont flow enough air unlocked im moving on.

    • @orfen88
      @orfen88 10 месяцев назад

      You can use your motorcycle key to move the detent, no? Seems like if you absolutely need to move the detent youre gonna have your moto key as well. No need to carry a small tool, although most people do anyways. I dont ride without a metric allen set minimum. I have learned my lesson on the road when my fuel tank line got disconnected and i was going from building to building to get a hex key to remove my seat and lift my tank.

    Great review and digging the all carbon look, as a huge Alpinestars fan from my tracksuit gear and non track gear but still like my Bell Race Star Flex DLX Tantrum-2. The face shield on the helmet with it's ProTint and the quickest release system I have ever used is amazing. The cool jade liner is awesome with it's magnetic chin pads. 3.5 pounds, half the price if you shop around. I know the team has done a review on this one and IMO is a better choice. I have been a Shoei and Arai guy for years but once I tried and used the Bell no looking back for me. I would deff like to see V2 version next year as they will most likely make some changes after this first year run.Cheers 😎

      I'd recommend holding one and trying it out first before casting judgement. Not everything made in China is terrible, and considering this is one of my favorite helmets I've tested in the past 7 years - I'd check it out before just looking at the label. But hey, I just test all these things for a living so 🤷‍♂

    • @ThatCleanMT
      @ThatCleanMT 10 месяцев назад +5

      @@patrickmchugh8039 I understand that not everything made in China is bad. However as someone who is familiar with all things racing helmets, just as you are, it’s completely unacceptable to enter the market against the long time established big players who don’t outsource their helmet manufacturing to China. That’s an immediate bad look. They’re up against the likes of Shoei, Arai, AGV… Japan and Italy handmade manufacturing. Entering the market with “made in china” for your flagship market entry helmet is gonna make any reputable racer take pause.

    • @patrickmchugh8039
      @patrickmchugh8039 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@ThatCleanMT 2 issues I take with that: first, the premise of your argument is still that being made in China is immediately bad, without having seen the helmet or checked it out (unless you bought one of the LE SR-10's?). I take issue with that as a product tester. You can use that to justify issues you find after the fact if you'd like, but not to start your fact-finding mission with.
      And second; this is there first street helmet whereas Shoei / Arai / AGV have been making helmets for over 150 years collectively. Of course they have the factory in their home countries to do it. I think it is insanely unreasonable to expect Astars to build a factory for something that may not work especially during the last 4 years in the world market. Yes, I hope they bring their MotoGP level helmets in house like AGV in the future (since the rest of AGV is made in Asia), but I'd rather Astars go to China / Korea / Asia for their first helmet instead of using their competitors factories in Europe like Shark / Nolan etc.
      The second point can be changed in the future once they establish a good set of helmets, but the first point is just along the lines of people thinking a tag from China inherently means trash and I'm not about that.

      @@patrickmchugh8039 The problem with it being made in China is they've clearly done it to make the helmets for cheap yet they're charging the customers a fortune for Made in China while their competitors are charging the same fortune for Made in Japan, Italy, Germany etc...

My bike is built with a good amount of carbon fiber which is what leans me to the Alpinestars. I’ve had 5 X-14’s and they’re just tried and true. These helmets have been used in MotoGP for a while now, so they have been tried and tested. My vote is for the R10 because they have a larger lateral visibility. The way that Shoei sits on your head, you won’t have as much of a view as the R10 at full tuck.

  • @johnm6683
    @johnm6683 6 месяцев назад +1

    Got mine. Overall a very good helmet but a few misses.
    I always struggle with comfort. I have Pista GP RR, Signet X, XSPR-Pro etc. Always have comfort issues as I am longer oval. They break in eventually but only after months of discomfort. This is definitely between long oval and intermediate oval so I have zero comfort issues around the circumference of my head from day one. Mild jaw pain after an hour or so but I’m confident that the cheek pads will break in nicely. If it doesn’t I can order thinner cheek pads.
    The helmet really disappears at speed. It’s very light and head checks don’t cause buffeting. I’d say it’s very quiet for a race helmet. The vents actually work and one gets used to the somewhat strange visor locking mechanism. There’s a feeling of your head being enclosed and the shell feels close and compact.
    Downsides are the helmet feels a bit squeaky and cheap vs Shoei, Arai and AGV, as does the thin, flimsy box and accessories just thrown into it vs the aforementioned brands that have polystyrene blocks to secure the helmet and accessories. It’s just a bad first impression for an otherwise decent helmet.
    The biggest miss for me is the absolutely useless chin curtain. After a claimed 10 year development cycle they decided to design a narrow, u-shaped chin curtain that does absolutely nothing to stop wind blasting you in the face. I just don’t understand why they didn’t make a triangular chin curtain like most other manufacturers. I can make a third party piece work but will lose the lovely red-piped trim and OEM look. Alpinestars need to issue a replacement extended curtain quickly. But they won’t. Also, you can’t use the spoiler and chin curtain at the same time like you can with the Shoei.
    Like a lot of Alpinestars products I think it is close to being stellar (pardon the pun) but just falls a bit short. I am undecided about keeping it or selling it. Also, this should be made in Italy for this kind of money, not China. If Arai and Shoei can make a profit manufacturing their helmets in Japan I’m sure Alpinestars can come up with successful domestically made items. Maybe that’s the reason for the budget feel of everything despite all the design and development. It performs quite well when riding but I think if the worst happened I’d still rather crash in a Shoei or Arai.

      Yeah the Limited Edition carbon Red version was awesome, but only 200 were made of that one. As for the weight, we'd suggest holding it first before you cast judgement, it feels like one of the lightest helmets out there (especially when wearing it) because of how well it's balanced. If they were aiming for low weight only, they likely would've ditched the spoiler, aero package, and used a cheap thin shield - but that wasn't their goal.

    I want a quiet, protective, comfortable urban helmet. I think my head is a bit rounder than average too.

      For riding on the street, this may not be a great helmet-and can possibly be a very poor choice depending on the motorcycle being ridden. Medium to tall windscreens are not friendly to this helmet in our tests-which, granted, took place amongst a group of just two, but provided enough evidence that one should consider the intended use of a helmet like this one carefully. Again IMHO.
      I live in part of Asia, its hot. Maybe the user from another world has different opinion. I'm just giving you my perspective.
      It is a race helmet. But most race helmet can be riden well on the street. This one doesn't (Shark Race-R Pro). Very specific on the track and track only.
      + Very snug
      + Very good ventilation
      + Good stability at high speed
      + Crystal clear visor
      + Excellent protection (5 star Sharp rating**)
      - Louder than average wind noise (nearly the same like KYT NX or NZ Race)
      - Very focused design can make it a poor performer outside of specific conditions

      We think it goes head to head with the Pista but definitely inches out the Shark thanks to the adjustable interior, rotational impact protection and the higher number of shells. On the road it was just as awesome too. Rode in it for 2 hours each day commuting / traffic / twisty roads / highways and it was extremely versatile. @@newtype101 You should definitely give it a try because you might be surprised. Riding in this one for over 4 months now and it is my new commuter helmet because of how stable it is and ventilated. It is definitely a track-bred helmet, but 10x more usable on the street than we've seen from other MotoGP helmets including the Pista. And since you mentioned being in a hot Asian-area, this is one of the best ventilated full face helmets out there. The shield will also stay upright at highway speeds if you run sun glasses, which gives you another massive vent.

      Well I stopped in to my local Cycle Gear with my new R10 and created quite the stir since they had not seen one yet. The 45mm speakers which they had in stock do fit quite tightly and you do have to put a small groove with your thumbnail in the EPS to let the speaker wire out. But they do fit where they don’t fit in the X15. So I am a happy camper. Loving the helmet so far.

      Sound has more to do with you and your bike than it does the helmet, so noise level will vary from rider to rider. Having said that, for our test rider, the Astars was one of the quieter sport / track helmets we've experienced - so take that for what it's worth. As for weight, that is much more straight forward - the Scorpion is about 5oz lighter in a size MD since it has much less aero-parts and vents etc. Hope that helps!
