  • @paladonis

    I liked the rum cask after adding ice. I know that knocks it under the 40% mark, and yes it thins it out, but that's where it brings out the sweet. I really wish the rum cask one was shooting more at 46% so the addition of ice helped keep the proof and bring the sweet. I just saw them release one finished in Mezcal casks and it's also 40. Of the Dewars 12 is my favorite with a bit of that light smoke and honeysuckle notes.

    So the metallic note on the finish - I'm a fan of rums, and I taste that similar note with a number of higher-end, especially higher proof rums. I get that (and a whole lot more) on the Balcones Texas Rum (cask strength) and on the Appleton 12 Rare Cask.
    I get a brief hint of it on the Treaty Oak Rum, and it's waaaaaay way in the back on younger, sweeter rums (where fruit and sugar notes dominate).
    Just my 2-1/2 cents. :)

    a common misconception is that rum is sweet because its made from sugar cane/molasses but due to the conversion of sugars to alcohol and distillation it can be an incredibly dry spirit (especially if you add tannins due to Caribbean aging in the mix). Some rums are sweet but in my experience that's mostly fruitiness like Jamaican rums. Other rums like Ron Zacapa 23 (let's not talk about the number..) are sweet due to dosing, added sugars after the fact.
    But I guess you shouldn't expect rum casks to add a sweet finish even if rums are often sweet, due to those added sugars..
    Would be interesting if they mentioned from what distillery the rum came due to different rules and regulations on the Caribbean islands.

  • @raydebenedict7787

    Teeling Small Batch (Irish) and Balvenie Caribbean Cask (Scotch) are both great rum finished whiskies. Considering how much I really liked Dewars 12 Year Old, it's disappointing this didn't work out so well.

  • @rumcellar3581
    @rumcellar3581 4 года назад

    I could be way off, but I wonder if it could be a Jamaican rum cask. Jamaica is known for having a rotten banana funk, which some love, and others find revolting, and compare it to rotting meat or a gamey-ness. Just based on the "blood" note, mostly. Maybe that's how it's presenting in the scotch?

  • @chrismcdaniel6035
    @chrismcdaniel6035 4 года назад

    this was the first time I had an unopened untried bottle of Scotch sitting there on my shelf that you happened to be reviewing. I pretty much agree. I don't think the end of it is as bad as you say but that's just me. you are right though the finish is what makes it something I'm probably not going to buy again. I don't hate it but don't really like it either. if I was with a friend and they had it and offered me a sip I'd drink it
