- We propose a system called “Brobdingnagian Glass” that realizes the binocular perspective of a miniature human using a vibrating hemispherical mirror and a camera in order to remove the lower limit of realizable scale. We reproduced the binocular stereovision at 1.72 mm as the interpupillary distance. This human is about 5 cm tall.

Is there a reason you can't do this with fibre-optics?
No idea what the best way of doing this with fibre-optics would be, but thinking about the obvious approach of putting two tiny endoscope lenses side-by-side[*]: One limitation of the Brobdingnagian system is that the vibrating mirror necessitates a very fast shutter speed, so the scene has to be well lit - but one can compensate by using a relatively large mirror and camera. Once you have that working, going beyond mantis perspective and shrinking down further to fruit fly view is fairly straightforward. With the fiber-optic approach, on the other hand, you'd have to make the lenses even tinier, and the amount of light you can capture goes way down.
I suspect that in practice, the foremost difference is about which contrived technical challenge you rather fancy working on. If your main concern was about cameras stubbornly refusing to interpenetrate, surely you'd just get a beam splitter from -floor C in the physics building- Ebay?
[*] This is actually a thing in the field of robotic tools for surgery.
