hello from Korea Matt :) in china they’ve got Fan Ho in america they’ve got Robert Frank. in korea we got Han Young Soo. check out his book, “Seoul Modern Times” photographs from 1950’s after the korean war. he was pioneer of street photography in korea :) it would probably be refreshing to check out photos from the other side of the world ;) awesome collection of bnw street photography photography! highly recommended!!
Saul Leiter - Early Color Gianni Berengo Gardin - Inediti (o quasi) Paolo Di Paolo - Lost World Tod Papageorge - Dr. Blankman New York, Kodachrome 1966 - 1967 Mario Carnicelli - American Voyage
With Saul Leiter, it still baffles me - and the same goes with cinema - how colour photography in the 1950s/60s trumps over colour photography in 2020. Changing filmstocks, I know, but a change for the worse. So much more vivid back then without being overly-saturated.
Great video, as usual Matt! I really appreciate this right now that we´re in a lockdown here in the UK and I´ve been looking to expand my collection of photobooks and get some inspiration. I´ll definitely check them out! Thanks for the suggestions!
Useful thanks. Been considering Cape Light as my Feb pickup. I try to get at least one photo book a month. In reality it's often more than one 😄👍 Erwitt's on the list too.
Thanks for the photo book collection series. And keep reviewing photo books, even ones that you havent yet purchased. Maybe expand into the up and coming influencers, other photo critique blogs/websites, and even sites to purchase individual prints.
Hey Matt! Awesome video as always. I have 2 photo book recommendations for you! My favourite is, Waiting for the Magic: The Photography of Oscar Marzaroli - a photographer from my hometown of Glasgow, he captures what Glasgow was all about in its hay day. My second recommendation is, The Journal of a Skateboarder by Thomas Sweertvaegher! Both awesome books with some spectacular photographs. :)
I just got "The Best of Life" from a thrift store recently. Put together by some editors when it was announced Life magazine would be closing. So many amazing photographs of historical moments and people in it. Its nuts that you could just pick up a magazine from the grocery store with photos by Robert Capa or W. Eugene Smith.
Problem with those books is, when I go to a shop where they have nice books it's like o yeah that one , and that one , and that one too, KACHINGGGGGG !!!!! Okay here is my recent book choice: 1. Dennis Hopper. Photographs 1961-1967 (buy 2nd hand, cost a lot) 2. Vincent Peters - The Light Between Us and Selected works 3. Daniella Midenge - Sex & Cigarettes
I want suggest two book you Matt, Gordon Parks Half Past Autumn a retrospective & Contact High A visual History Of Hip Hop. Those two book has inspired me to grow as a photographer. I also want to thank you for creating this channel it amazing.
These are always dangerous videos for (would be) photo book addicts. I was back home for the holidays and there was a big Joel Meyerowitz career retrospective book with an overview of all his numerous different projects ... I checked the dust jacket and there was no price, which meant I would have needed to ask ... and if you need to ask ... sadly the book had to stay where it was. The Cape Light section of the book was one of my favourites, so that might end up on my shelves soon. Thanks for the recommendations, and all the best Matt.
I used to have a copy of Joel's book, Aftermath, on the events of 9/11 and what took place at Ground Zero afterwards. I ended up gifting it to a friend, but it was a huge book that I picked up for $5 at a discount book store. Very surprising to see.
Recently flipped through my first Elliott Erwitt book at the library. The book was "Snapshot" and it was soo good! Wouldn't have picked it up if you hadn't mentioned him before :)
Another video of Matt Day suggesting Books, another time I blow my paycheck on photo books. you need to check out: Michael Keena - "Forms of Japan" Ryojii Akiyama - "Dear Old Days"
It's more erratic but I think Lomography has a camera that's supposed to emulate the effect. It spins using a pull string or something like that. Haven't used it, and can't comment on how well it does, but it might be worth looking into
@@NathanButh Yeah, I've seen that too. I think they have a couple of different panorama cameras. But the optics on those Lomography cameras are a bit hit and miss, I think. I might try a 35mm adapter for my Pentacon Six!
I discovered Jeff Bridges as photographer in K-Pax DVD extra content, eighteen years ago 😶. At that time he used an X-Pan, always a panoramic view and I love it. In 2015 he exhibited at PhotoEspaña, unfortunately Madrid is 400km away from where I live and I couldn't see the exhibition. Luckily we had a show of Elliott Erwitt in my hometown in 2007, of course, about dogs 😀. www.fotoencuentros.es/07/eventos/ellioterwitt.php Sadly with the crisis, Fotoencuentros lost its financial support and disappeared 😢.
Ordered Bridges’ book. I wish I had picked up vol 1 when it came out! I like Dan Winters “Periodical Photographs” and anything by Eggleston or Atget. There was a nice piece on Winogrand yesterday on public radio: www.pri.org/programs/studio-360/images-new-york-west-side-story-and-garry-winogrand-s-central-park-zoo
Interesting I love photo books! I have a collection of thrifted photo books that I get for 50 cents each I Might make a video on my collection 🤔 Any body else have thrifted photo books?
Matt I would like to HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS INCREDIABLE PHOTOGRAPHER HIS NAME IS SEBASTIAO SALGADO HIS WORK OVER THE LAST 50 +YRS IS INCREDIABLE TO SAY THE LEAST I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO RECOMMEND HIS DOCUMENTARY ENTITLED "THE SALT OF THE EARTH" IT'S TRULY AMAZING WHAT THIS MAN HAS DONE... I HOPE YOU'LL CHECK IT OUT ALONG WITH YOUR SUBSCRIBERS.
What do you mean in terms of diversity? Throughout all of the videos I’ve done on photo books, we’ve talked about both men and women, people of color, from all over the world.
Jamie Hoy He added quite a bit of diversity in this video. Did you see the different styles of photography in each book he reviewed? Why does the photographer’s skin color, sex, etc matter? That sounds racist, sexist, etc in and of itself
@@mattdayphoto I just believe it is important as someone with a platform to always represent diversity and inclusion. If you only surround yourself with artists that look like yourself you truly don't get to experience all that art has to offer.
@@Gregorio416 I'm talking about who is behind the camera, not the art subject. If you don't think that people of different genders, backgrounds, or races create different art then you truly don't understand art itself.
I need more portrait photos books. I just started my collection. We need more videos on books now and then.
Thanks
3 amazing picks mannn. Cape light is definitely the photobook that I revisit the most!
Your work shows that in a really good way.

Thanks for the book suggestions! All these options are very inspiring.
"it's never really at the expensive of his subject" yes yes yes that is really the thing with Mr. Erwitt
It's so lighthearted, I love it.
Great video, as usual Matt! I really appreciate this right now that we´re in a lockdown here in the UK and I´ve been looking to expand my collection of photobooks and get some inspiration. I´ll definitely check them out! Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks Matt, I'm always on the lookout for photography books and I'll have to add these three to my list.

Glad to see you got cape light ! I grew up on the cape and this book holds a special place in my heart
So many great photos!
Hey. I already own those three books. Seems your previous recommendations had an impact on my buying patterns 😊

RS Better than asking about photo books and being directed to the “Digital Photography for Dummies” etc. section.
I also have a copy of Pictures Vol.2, great book, you can see the fun Jeff Bridges had in taking the photographs.
Yes! So much passion there.
I want suggest two book you Matt, Gordon Parks Half Past Autumn a retrospective & Contact High A visual History Of Hip Hop. Those two book has inspired me to grow as a photographer. I also want to thank you for creating this channel it amazing.
Contact High has been on my Amazon Wish List for awhile now! I'll check out Half Past Autumn as well!
Thanks for sharing these photo books
That's 3 more books added to my list. Please keep doing these.
I definitely will! They usually don't do as well as other videos on here, but I think they're still worth talking about.

Three great recommendations, cheers from Australia.
Love these, need to get my hands on some!!

Haha, I hear that from time to time. Southern Ohio definitely has it's own sound.
Yeah i just wanted to say not full on dixie but there is a hint of twang in there.
Interesting
