This reminds me of the movie "North Dallas 40" There was a great line from Nick Noleti who played tight end. He said, talking about management: "when I call it a game, you call it a business. When I call it a business, you call it a game"!

The average length of career for most NFL players is 2 - 3 years and only the players with guaranteed money in their contracts see millions. I agree that no matter what their income is they should invest wisely, spend frugally and closely monitor their own health with their own physicians. Sadly, many have been playing football for years before they even make it to the NFL and the long-term impact to their health may be unavoidable.

The real problem is that football is dangerous for long term health. That’s it.
The NFL knows this. So paying players isn’t their highest concern. American football as we know it will eventually come to an end, or be changed so drastically that it’ll virtually cease to be anything resembling today’s game.
The players are tone deaf. They make millions of dollars that if invested properly can be the building block for generational wealth. Their children, their children’s children are better suited to be finically competent. There are people working minimum wage jobs while going to school full time to get out of a hole. There are people happily working for $30 an hour sitting under lights all day that slowly give them cancer. Getting paid millions to smash your head into another grown man for a couple of years isn’t too bad of a gig. On top of all of that, you chose to go into that field of work…

NFL should set up a pension system based on years in, money made, position, etc… players are tone deaf though.. if you’re a high round draft pick or manage to play your way into a second lucrative contract.. generational wealth for the top 40-50 percent of guys. The physical and mental toll the game takes on players should qualify them for a lifetime of health insurance covered at the NFLs expense once they retire. Everyone shouldn't qualify but if a player plays a minimum of 5 years (or 80 games) should allow for partial or split coverage; 8 years or more, full coverage; career ending injury while below 8 years should be full coverage for any issues related to that injury.
I would get deep into the finances but I would basically like to see players with 8 years or more tenure get a scaling stipend (.0025-.005% of NFL profits; which would be taxable) after the age of 45 for 20 years. That would allow them to pay into SS and allow for stability if they have had hardships or mishaps due to mental health.

It so happened they chose one that has detrimental effects on their bodies in the long term. The NFL is a business like every other business and they pay their employees (players) what the market and their collective bargaining agreement dictates at the time. Players are no different than those who worked at shipyards their entire career which takes a tole on their bodies and health also. No more than the smartest employee who works for Apple and performs and creates at a level which annually raises Apple’s net worth. The shipyard worker and Apple employee aren’t deserving of being taken care of after they retire. They chose their profession, accepted the risks that came with it and prepared for their future after retirement with the money they earned while employed or they chose not to (their choice again). I won't get to why I agree but tell me this please, in your opinion hasn't it gotten worse since that POS Roger Goodell became commissioner? That POS has ruined a great game. The NFL may treat their players like trash when it comes to health care and helping take care of the older players from the 70s and 80s that didn’t make as much. But current players is given every opportunity to succeed on and off the field but most chooses outside advice. The NFLPA and NFL Player Engagement provide learning opportunities to assist players in career transition from the league. They even help send plays back to college to get a Bachelors Degree. Then there’s former players like Adewale Ogunleye who trying to teach former and current players how to manage money and invest. Idiots got to much pride to as for help but blame everybody else for their downfall when they can’t get handouts. I’m just saying 🤷🏾‍♂️

For them to treat their most precious resource the way they do is both insane and criminal. Plus, it is unbelievable how they continue to squeeze the fun out of the game. Watching all the amazing pro football players do their thing will always be a joy. But, man this is one tough sport. Sadly, the owners follow the "Goldern Rule". "He who has the gold rules".

see this is the issue i have with the older athletes. current athletes have seen what the previous generations have went through and dealt with and have been fighting for players. for example in the NBA they clown the current players for load management yet had there been some sort of load management back in the day so many athletes could’ve extended their careers and left the game less beat up. in football they don’t practice the same way they did 30 years ago but you’ll have some former players calling the current ones soft for that reason.

I love watching nfl football despite the following: Goodell is extremely phony and isolates himself from true press coverage, lack of a referee on tv to correct obvious mistakes that usually benefit the Cinderella teams and biggest named quarterbacks, nfl policy of releasing information to a few insider media darlings while leaving other media types in the cold and especially local media and consequently an atmosphere of fear in which their is almost no investigative journalism regarding the players, owners or management.
