I agree. The learning curb is different with everyone. However, even when you have a store employee ringing you out one will still tend to experience delays.
A perfect example is the typical social butterfly cashier wanting to engage every other customer or a colleague next to them in long winded conversations when they have a long line of people waiting to be checked out. I don't mind when employees are simply being courteous. "Good morning, good afternoon, or did you find everything ok?" Short/to point. It's expected.
However, to go off on a rant about politics, or who is getting married/recent gossip?? C'mon now. You have job to do. Save the personal conversations for when you are OFF the clock or when there is not a mile long cue of people waiting to be rung out.

Once upon a time, you would walk into a grocery store and the clerk goes and grabs all your items for you. We also had milk and dairy delivered to our front doors by the milk man. We can't resist automation forever.

Shelf check is fine for the “fast lane” (12 items or less lane) but honestly I’d still prefer having a person check me out if I have lots of items

Let's be candid, the only reason to remove them is theft. The thing with bulk items doesn't hold, nobody says to not have a traditional checkout in store for various items that do not lend themselves to self checkout. Even in grocery stores, you have bottle returns, that I do, you have coupons, you have to go to a regular checkout. Increase security so that these thieves pay and are banned from stores. For me it is very convenient not to have to wait in line, not to mention that i checkout faster than the pro. I don't see why people like me have to suffer because of some thieves.

First thing I do when arriving at grocery store is see how many cashiers are on duty. If there is not enough cashiers or only self check is available, I leave. Shopping is difficult enough for many people with chronic pain issues, disability or senior citizens to do their shopping. I use the shopping cart to help me walk while I lean on it. I really miss help taking my groceries to the car. Then I only have to worry about getting my groceries from my car to the kitchen. My Cronic pain and fatigue are not visible. If I could depend on human cashiers and help taking my purchase to car I would definitely shop more often and possibly enjoy shopping again. As it is I avoid grocery shopping as much as possible due to real customer service that has been eliminated while groceries climb in cost. I even won't eat to avoid grocery shopping.

I hope things change for you soon. But based on what you're saying, have you tried shopping where there are actual cashiers? Well, I can see that you do or used to. What went wrong?

A lot of grocery stores these days offer a service where you can order online, drive to the store and park, let them know via an app or phone call you are there, and they will bring your groceries out and put them in your car. Both my local Kroger and Walmart offer this, and while there is a minimum order ($35 at Walmart, and I believe also at Kroger), that is usually easy to reach.

    Self checkouts.
I have not nor will I ever use one.
I am not paid to be a clerk, I am not getting any reduction in my groceries to do the job of a store clerk.
I will not help the food chains, who are already gouging us on our groceries reduce their staff to increase profits.
I would prefer those store clerks to be getting a regular paycheck.
    .
I have in the past asked the store managers to open up a checkout when there were lineups, mostly they would or ring my stuff through manually at an auto checkout or a regular checkout.
Those that wouldn't... I point to what was going to be my purchase and walked out on them.
Am I being an as***le about it? Yep. But I can live with it.
That's how I deal with this situation.

imagine all the money they "saved" only having one or two trained cashiers and then complaining that people would just steal under their own supervision. I don't commend stealing but I don't mind it for mega corporations like Walmart and the like.

It's 100% theft issues , people are intentionally stealing because "they have to do the companies job for them". A total B's excuse for people who just don't want to pay for a product. Use a different store. Criminals will be criminals and will always blame everyone for them stealing

I must be one of the few people who prefer self checkouts. I like grouping my items in the sequence in which I'll be unloading them when I get home. Also in the stores where I shop, the lines are usually shorter at the self checkouts. My one pet peeve is that some stores don't allow cash at the self checkout. The irony is that I most prefer self checkouts when I only have one or two items, a situation in which I am almost certainly going to want to pay cash. Example - just a carton of milk (I'm looking at you, Wawa, a convenience store chain in the Eastern US) or a mixture of items from the salad bar in a container (I'm looking at you, Whole Foods, a nationwide chain in the US). Do I wait in a long line for a cashier, or do I use my debit or credit card for a total order under $10. (I am old enough to remember when stores put minimum purchase amounts, usually at least $25, on credit card purchases, so I am not in the habit of using plastic for lesser amounts.)
No, I have never knowingly stolen anything using a self checkout line. But once, after I left the store and was taking the bags of purchases out of my shopping cart, I discovered a package of frozen vegetables that I hadn't rung up underneath them. I hurried back into the store and went immediately to a self checkout line to pay for them. By the way, this is a store that does take cash at the self checkout. I was glad I didn't have to put such a small purchase on my card.
