To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history.
He and Shifty talk through Collen’s formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and Gary Moore all played a hand in Collen’s high-flying fretwork.
Collen’s solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio-and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren’t many tricks to Collen’s sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the ’80s.

Phil's such an awesome guy; he lives about a 1/2 mile away from me and I always see him around town and he's so down to earth and cool.
Phil is such a pleasant human being. He just glows with positivity. Such a fan of his.
He really seems to be a great guy.
Ran into him at LN Costco and he spent 10 minutes talking with me and my wife. Great guy! Incredible talent!
I met him at Live 8 in Philadelphia before Def Leppard went on stage. He is very down to earth and a nice guy.
I had seen them at the Lakewood blue claws stadium in 2005 when they opened for Bryan adams. I was in the front row as close to the stage as u could get. Phil played in front of me the entire time. I kept giving him the guitar picking motion as to say can I have a pick? After he did his solo he threw his metal puck directly at me. Don’t know how I caught it with everyone around me but by the Grace of God I ended up catching it. Everyone near me was asking if they could see it…. I was like yeahhhhh right lmfao😂. Never would have gotten it back. If you reply to me, can you see if You could get me his signature ? He is awesome. Been a Def Leppard fan since my early teens during the high n dry tour.
Chris has got to be one of the best interviewers around: incredibly knowledgeable across so many genres, well researched, articulate, and he has natural and easy rapport with his guests. Kudos, Shifty!
Too bad he has ZERO charisma. It’s like the life light has been sucked out of his soul. Perfect for being a backing guitarist in the biggest/most mediocre cover band in the history of pop/rock music.
Been following Phil
Since 1985
One cool guy
His book is really good
Seen Def Leppard 3 times already
Killer guitars
Chris is just such a masterful interviewer who is obviously so interested in each person he's interviewing and so respectful of them and their talents. I've listened to every single "Walking the Floor" podcast twice and will be going back through these "Shred with Shifty" shows because I just can't get enough! What a fun and cool and talented guitarist Phil Collen is! Thank you, Chris!!!
phil collen's ibanez destroyer started a lifelong love of explorer guitars for me, my favorite guitar shape... Phil seems like such a genuinely cool person. great interview!
Fully agreed. Foolin’ is what got me choosing between a guitar or keyboard. 🤘🏾
@@MadHatterND "Foolin" was the first time I heard Def Leppard, I actually thought it was KISS...!? Def Leppard has been my favourite band since.........but fuck me, do I ever miss Steve Clark
Same, I'm a bass player mainly but i built a partscaster P bass in black on black with a cream pickup and gold hardware because I've loved that colour combo since i saw the Photograph video as a kid. I've never liked other takes on the Explorer shape except the Destroyer II, all the little notches just work for me. Phil and Steve also the most underrated guitar duo of the 80s to me. As polished as Hysteria sounds listen to the individual guitar tracks and their arrangements. Its wonderful.
Amazing conversation between ridiculously talented, but humble guys.
Your discussion about forgetting lyrics was terrific. Any time fans get a look behind the curtain on how professionals handle live performance issues it's appreciated.
Talking shop about solo construction was super interesting.
Def Leppard was my first concert in 1983 on the Pyromania tour. Still my favourite band to this day! This is probably my favourite interview of Phil. Great job! 👍🏻👊🏻🍻
Phil is awesome. I love that he held up the Spark Mini practice amp at the end! Just in case you thought he had a 4x12 behind the camera.
OMG Phil is actually wearing a shirt 😂
I bet Phil does CrossFit.
I didn't recognize him
😂😂😂
I thought the same thing. If I had his abs, I wouldn't wear a shirt either!
I mean, if I was as jacked as Phil I wouldn’t wear a shirt!
Phil is the reason I picked up a guitar and the solo in Photograph is the reason.
In the 80s Def Lepard was one of my favorite bands. I learned to play guitar after that and got into Yngwie Malmsteen and John Petrucci. Not too long ago while on a long drive, I threw in Pyromania and loved every minute of that album. I never learned a single solo from that album but I realized while listening back to Pyromania that Phil was a huge influence on my playing. Without realizing it, I was playing his licks all the time! The solos are all so melodic they just stay with you. Thank you Phil!
That is so freakin' cool! What a cool realization for you. I went from Def Leppard to Yngwie as well :) And then to Hair Metal. And then back to instrumental with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Tony Macalpine. And then...to progressive with Dream Theater and John Petrucci :) You are my Brother From Another Mother :)
Love Phil. Proper gentleman. He’s so down to earth it beyond belief.
Phil is such a nice sympathetic person . An absolutely normal guy and an extraordinary guitarist with a special sound of his own. 👌🎸🎸🎸💯🙂
Took me a minute to recognize Phil with his shirt on. 🤣Chris does such a great job with these interviews.
Definitely the best live band . Phil and Vivian are insanely good the way they trade off on solos are perfectly in sync with each other
Literally one of the greatest songs/solos ever written.
Thank you so much for this great interview with the great Phil Collen. I am a great fan of his work and the entire body of Def Leppard's material in the 80' & 90's. I was deeply involved in the Punk, New Wave and Post Punk scene so I really didn't get a lot of exposure to their music until my good friend Jol Danzig (of Hamer Guitars and was mentioned by Phil) gave me the Pyromania and Hysteria CD's in the early 90's. After I watched this video, I spent the rest of my day watching every bio, documentary on Def Leppard because I was inspired to. I especially appreciated Phil citing Mick Ronson, Johnny Thunders and Steve Jones as guitarists with highly influential sounds and techniques based on simple "Chuck Berry Riffs" on steroids. Great interview.
Shred with Shifty is such a great series. So many great musicians sharing their love of music & their skills. Love it!
Chris is actually a great interviewer! Great questions that he actually lets the interviewee answer. So elusive and wonderful. Phil Collen is the King.
I've said it a million times and I'm glad Phil agrees. You should be able to sing or hum a good guitar solo. The dueling guitars in Hotel California, you can sing all of it, Pink Floyd, Gilmore's solos from The Wall, you can sing all of them. Most of what Steve Howe does, even though it is often fast and technical you can still hum it. Phil understands what makes a great solo in a great song.
Wonderful interview with Phil, the legend. A ton of valuable content and great behind the scenes insight on their tour with Motley, and upcoming with Journey. Love it!
Great inteview. Phil is a cool dude. I love how he just says "oh, well, that's just Jimmy Page, that's just Blackmoore, that's just Chuck Berry" when talking about his solos. Humble.
What a really cool guy….Phil’s not too shabby either 🤣
This is by far my favorite guitar solo of all time. Listening to how excited Phil is talking music is so much fun. Love this guy and his band.
Super humble guy. We all know Phil and Viv are superb lead guitarists, but it's worth mentioning the power of them together as rhythm guitarists. At Wembley last year they both nailed it.
Um... We just gonna pretend like this man doesn't have Ketchup and Mustard bottles on a little tray chillin' on the arm of his couch?
I’m think what s going on those
Doesn’t everyone? 😅
Incredible interview. Thank you!!
Just came across these interviews randomly and watched 5 back to back. Great stuff! Subscribed
amazing to see Phil telling us his stories and especially any time of guitar lessons from their big hits, thank you!
Amazing, Phil Collen is so kool. Def Leppard my favorite band. So glad I was able to see them. Went with my brother. Was Billy Idol opening. To grow up listening to them and them being a giant part of my teens. Was in high school when Hysteria came out! Cheers!
Shifty thank you for all these amazing interviews can't stop binge watching them
What a great interview!! One of the best interviewees I've seen on this program!! Cool dude and real as they come. Rock Star for sure!!
That was a cool one!! Always love to see and hear anything Phil collen
Another great episode, Shifty! Can’t wait for the next one. 🥳
Was lucky enough to see Phil with Girl when they supported UFO many moons ago. They were absolutely on fire. “Sheer Greed” is a fantastic album and a great listen for any guitarist. Great episode Chris ✌️❤️
damn - that's a good lineup! we need to get michael schenker on the show
I saw them supporting UFO too. They played really well but we got distracted by Gerry Laffy having the back of his Les Paul covered in padding and gaffa to stop his bullet belt scratching it. Not very rock'n'roll. :)
It's odd that Girl never got a lot of traction, but the early 80s UK rock scene wasn't very receptive to the glam influence despite everybody having grown up on some kind of glam whether it be Bowie, the New York Dolls or the Sweet. Girl were a few years too early.
@@philwildcroft1764 Nice one. Our seats were in the circle so I missed Gerry’s padded Les Paul, though from memory I’m pretty sure Phil was using his dark red LP Custom.
Same here. I saw that tour too.
Yep I saw Girl loads of times, they always seemed to be supporting bands at Hammersmith Odeon for a while ! They were brilliant live. Sheer Greed is a fantastic album, one of my favourites.
Phils solos are like a conversation with two people. That question/answer back n forth. So good!
Talking about Earls Court, 1992 Def Leppard on the 7-day Weekend Tour was absolutely amazing. The show in the round and what a great sound. Never to be forgottten.
I was there too! The only show I saw in the round, it was really something
I would love to sit with a cup of coffee and talk music and guitars with Phil. And play the odd riff every now and then and just pick his brain. It’s kinda of weird that he named Prince. Because I first was a keyboardist, and had nothing with glam metal and Def Leppard, Bin Jovi etc. I was playing Prince stuff on keyboards and the infamous Brit pop bands. I just bought a guitar when I was 16 because I was bored and frustrated with keyboards. And I basically learned guitar by listening to Prince and Def Leppard because hysteria and pyromania had those big 80s chorus’s that I loved. Just like Wendy in Purple rain. Goosebumps! And after 4 months I show up to a rehearsal of our band and said: “I wanna play some guitar”. And we mainly did Brit pop and Prince and some stones. And they were like… okay let’s record your keyboard parts as backing tracks and let’s because a two guitar band.
And then you learn two write your own stuff and still you hear Phil, Dave Murray, Keith Richard influence in everything I play.

Phil collen did a great interview today Def Leppard is my favorite band 😃
Best pod cast in the history of pod casts! Chris what a great host &
great content! 🤘🏽
Steve Clark, Pete Willis and Phil Collen are THE reason I picked up guitar. No doubt. As a 10 year old kid seeing them on MTV just blew my mind. They were everything I wanted to be.
Excellent interview. Phil is intelligent, articulate and has a great memory!
Incredible interview, awesome job Shifty
This is why I love Phil so much, he loves everything I do. Prince is one of greatest musicians that has ever lived and I love 70s funk. EVH is the goat. I could go on.
Beck/EVH/Santana.
The Holy Trinity.
Man, that's great! Phil talking about the old days in London and the music scene at the time. Great questions, Shifty!
thanks!
I love Phil, he is a great guitar player and u can tell he loves what he does, and he looks good without a shirt ❤
This was a fantastic interview/lesson!
This is so rad to see Phil!!!! I met Phil at Jackson in 2005 and that’s when we become instant friends and him and his wife Helen. They been there for me and the band Hour Eleven which he played guitar on 2 tracks and we did a few photoshoots with Helen behind the camera! I tell ya, what an amazing experience and we love them both. Phil is such an underrated guitarist! Much love to Phil and what a honor to have Phil as mentor and an amazing friend for all these years. I can talk for hours on all the cool experiences! Especially when he showed me the correct way to play “Rock of Ages” in his living room! 😂. Great interview’!
Cheers!
This was the best, Phil is such a ripper.
Thank you for this lesson!
👏
The one song I would like to see Phil go through is Paper Sun. Its got some great riffs and solo parts from him and Vivian. This interview was great and Phil always is a very humble person in several past interviews I have seen.
Paper Sun is one of my all time favorite Def Leppard songs out of their huge catalog of great music.
@@gulfgal98 I just love how original it is. It has that appeal from Hysteria and Pyromania but with some additional progressive influence. That Euphoria Album was really good - Promises was another good single
Cool interview Chris. Phil Collen was responsible for shaping my very young guitar mind. He seems like a really cool guy
Phil Collen and Def Leppard... absolute top blokes of rock... great interview.
Great conversation - what a nice guy Phil is and a hell of a player!
Charvel, Jackson, EVH...
These guys are making some of the best Superstrats around.
I'm about to order a Charvel DK and I can't wait 😆🤙🏼🔥
I met Phil backstage at That metal show on VH1..super nice humble Rockstar for sure.🎉
Nothing better to watch on my way to the gig
Now, since I'm through the whole thing... Chris, You are such a great interviewer, all the questions I'm as guitar player want to know, right on point, no bla bla... awesome! Thanks man! (huge foos fan, btw ... come to germany pls)
What an amazing interview!
Great interview. Phil seem pretty humble and is great player!
Phil added so much with his amazing solos on pyromania absolutely brilliant
That was amazing. Phil Collen is such a gifted player.
Chris, that was an incredible interview. Your questions were excellent, it was really fun.
amazing interview ! BRUTAL \m/
This is such a great interview
Such a cool interview! Met Phil years back by total fluke & sufice to say I was a fan before and even greater fan after that brief but surrealistic encounter. Caught him (full band) live with AC and MC/J5 not far back....what a show! Curious if he still uses stainless steel picks? Lord knows ive gone though a few string sets just cuz of his influence. Maybe thats why he went to 13s...sheeeesh! 😬😬😬
My god, haven't listened to Girl for years... thanks for reminding me. Played Hollywood tease to death.. Great interview..saw Def Leppard a few times. Pyromania And Hysteria tours Edinburgh Playhouse way back in the 80's... fabulous time for music.
Fantastic interview!
Phil is amazing the dude always so nice he would be the guy that would sit down and jam with you he deserves more credit for being guitar hero
Love it, love it , love it! 50 minutes well spent!!
Phil is remarkably a down to earth humble guy. And for a smaller guy, bending 13’s like that…….Amazing power. Thanks for the interview.
My favorite shred with shifty, great one!
Dude, you seriously get the best guests for this show.
I remember Girl playing at the Marquee club in London and Richie Blackmore guest appeared on stage with them. I was a huge Girl fan and consequently Def Leppard. Many many years later you realise how cool that really was.
Great video. Great questions and Phil is a great guitar player and great conversation.
Cant wait to hear Brad Whitford. ❤
Thanks so much ❤
Great interview 👍👍🎸🎸
Love Phil Collens playing and background vocals.
I was 12 when Pyromania came out, and I wore the grooves off of my record. It was a phenomenal record. It still sounds great all of these years later.
loved it guys thanks all the best Nash
Love this ! Phil is an awesome guitarist !
So cool to hear Phil's first band Girl getting some love... if you havent checked them out, really good stuff true to their genre. Also saw Johnny Thunders play the Cabaret Metro back in 89/90. he didnt come out to play until midnight and it still was worth every minute.
Great Interview
this is brilliant-PC is a spectacularly good player but the enthusiasm from both players is infectious. Marvellous stuff..
Phil IS BY FAR very underrated.....the dude has been kick ass since the early days BUT HAS progressed so much over the years!!!!!
EXCELENT as always!!
Such a great and friendly guy! Hugs to Phil ❤
Phil is why I wanted to play guitar and the reason I pierced my ear 😂. God the 80's and 90's were the best time to grow up.
I played an early 2010 Phil Collin sig. I’ll never forget how his fret board seemed to just set up right in your face. The neck profile was amazing. Kudos bro
Right on! Great show!
Palming ...........brilliant !! Just solved the problem I have with my Charvel with a Floyd. Epic interview , always been a huge Phil Collen fan!
This is a great episode. I could listen to anyone talk about Mutt Lange all day. Knowing how well Phil and the lads worked with him makes it that much more interesting. He is one of my all time fav Producers. He’s an enigma.
Phil's the man. To his comment about using software, many don't know that Malcolm Young used Amplitude on at least a couple of songs on Black Ice.
Phil and Steve were perfect!!
2 great guitarists. Phil Collen is a great story teller. Love the pillow with the Purple Rain album cover on it.
This solo is awesome, powerful, uplifting
indeed!!
Thank You!!!
I defintely agree that you have to be able to sing a guitar solo! My favorite guitar players are those that can play heavy and melodic at the same time. Phil is always a pleasure to watch! Plus, I couldn't stop staring at his Grogu doll in the background! 😂
Great interview!!! I never knew Phil was a West Ham fan too!
That Jackson. Wtf. Need. 😎🎸
The Shred with Shifty logo is tight. Nice and bouncy and the way ‘with’ is nested is satisfying.
..Great interview🤘..Such a humble and down to earth guy is Phil,a damn mighty fine fellow for sure..love his work..🤘✌🙏
