This song isn't creepy to me, it just invokes mystery and curiosity. It drives the point further home that everything past the first few years of Bionicle was an explanation that yes, there really was more than just an island paradise.
I kind of agree with you, but at the same time I do feel this sense of unease or dread from listening to the music whilst also feeling what you described; a feeling of mystery and curiosity. It's one of the reasons why I'm struggling to figure out what category of ambient music this song classes as. I know it's definitely Drone Ambient since..well...there's a drone sound hums throughout the whole song, but I don't know if it classes as Dark Ambient or not. Basically I'm trying to find Ambient tracks similar to this and I'm getting nowhere, which could mean that Templar Studio may have made a unique Ambient track.
it might have been for kids at the time but the people behind the soundtrack pieces are masters at what they do infact, I would not say it is a stretch to assume that the creators of BIONICLE tried to instill a mystical soul search-ish aspect to children at an early age...
It's funny because even during the simpler moments of Bionicles story, back when the main story was just your standard good vs evil type plot, the mysterious and mystical elements really shone through, despite the fact that they were kind of hidden in the background for a good chunk of the story. I'd even go as far as saying that I preferred the story before the Mata Nui robot came into the equation. I don't really have any problems with the robot, in fact it's quite a good little Sci Fi twist, but to me the better parts of Bionicle are the parts where everything is tribal and spiritual.
It was Justin Luchter, who is still with Templar Studios, who composed this and most of the music. The only things he didn't compose, I think, were samples that he used. But he "composed" those together to make new sounds too.
@@MythicSuns even though the story felt simple, a lot of the main "bible" was finalized in the first year of production. The entire end up until THAT plot twist was known from day one.
So simple yet so satysfying... this soundtrack is very unsettling, you get the feeling of loneliness yet at the same time you feel like you were watched by a hundred pairs of deadly eyes... mesmerising...
This may be the most powerful atmospheric music of my life. Ah, so much nostalgia. It may be my bias and my powerful associations, but I think its a real masterpiece.
Good lord, that...low buzzing sound with the tiny xylophone combo always gets me. Of course the entire song is the theme to my nightmares, but it's those particular parts that just gives me such a shiver...I swear, I feel like I'm not even safe in my own home! That's how powerfully eerie this song is! *Shudder* ...the red star...
This is amazing. I would sit there at my computer while playing looking at space, space, space, space... And I would think, "Go anywhere on the island of mata nui... Just don't be here...." but I wouldn't.... I was just mesmerized. I could explore the whole island of mata nui, but I was there for some reason..... Just there.... I love this game. Annoying I can't seem to get it to work for Mac though. Just as I switched over...

@626thermal Actually, this is not quite true. Even the Mata Nui Online Game has hints of what Mata Nui really is and will be again after the mistika storyline (the giant robot).
DemonPikachu (yeah it's a 4 year old comment but *shrug*) that xylophone is actually a synth. pretty much everything in this song is electronic which suits the mood of bionicle nicely.
@626thermal And to think we had the picture of Mata Nui's mask there ALL ALONG! It really puts a grin on your face. Which vanishes into a wide-eyed blank stare when you listen to this music. Hypnotizing.
Guys, is it weird to say that my screen looks tilted on my eyes? Like the interface looks out of place when I play this song.... This is messing with my head.
what even was the red star anyway? I don't think we ever got an explanation for what exactly it is or what it does all we see it do is transform the matoran into the toa inika out of nowhere and then it disappears for the rest of the story
It is actually discussed more, mostly on the BionicleStory.com stories (I don't remember which, it's been years since I've read all of this). I don't want to spoil anything here, but if you're interested - biosector01.com/wiki/Red_Star
Yes. The giant robot was planned since the very beginning. You can see furrher proof of this on Christian Faber's blog. He is one of the OG creators of G1 BIONICLE, and he was the head concept designer too. Both story team member and designer. The idea of the Makuta creating viruses and the Toa heroes coming in pill-like capsules was also him. And he got that from his own real life experience of having a tumor and having to take meds to heal it. He envisioned the sickness as an evil virus, the Makuta, and that the pills/capsules contained tiny heroes who he would send down into his giant body to battle the virus/Makuta, and then awaken healthy.
random fact: the genre of this song (from what i can tell) is ambient drone. kinda funny that it took me 14 years since first hearing this to find out...man i feel old :/
@626thermal I dont think so. I was a Bionicle fan from the first second, but i the chapters i dont like are the Bohrok-Kal chapter (because mostly pointless) and the newer Bara Magna Chapters. Everything else was pretty epic, even in 2001-2003 was the best. 2001 and 2002 of course is the best out of them all. So magicall and magnificent, truly one of the best things that were EVER written in Fantasy/Sci-Fi.

This game is a lot like Myst
man, i wish farshtey had finished that web serial where pohatu and kopaka went up in it. man, now we'll never know what happened up there. :-(
BumbleBee1188 yeah man
Awakens the old memories inspired by this song. Nightmares unrememberable by anything but background noise. This song is both relaxing and horrifying.
This track leaves so much unexplained mystery :/

Very ominous and mysterious
Both are similar in that they're both point and click mystery adventures.
@626thermal I couldn't agree more!
the stars n crap didnt really impress me but damn this music is awesome

This music reminds me of seeing a little girl sitting under a tree crying and getting close to her
Wait WHAT????? It was there the whole time???

Why not Mask of Light arc too?

I really love this track. But I've grown to think of it as Kopakas theme because that xylophone makes it feel so cold. Eh, nevermind.
