Mobile Suit Gundam ( 機動戦士ガンダム, Hepburn: Kidō Senshi Gandamu, also known as First Gundam, Gundam 0079 or simply Gundam '79) was a ratings failure causing the episode count to be reduced and the story cut short. But it did introduce the world to RX-78-2.
And then Bandai stepped in with their model kits and created what would eventually be known around the world as Gunpla.
Mobile Suit Gundam was eventually imported to the US where it was again a ratings failure... twice!

True story: the Gundam show and original movies were so important to my Japanese wife, our daughter’s middle name is Sayla, as in Sayla Mass, her favorite character.
Your wife sounds awesome, lucky man.

One was from the 70's Japan.
The other was from 80's US.
Tell me how different the local market was with those countries during those times..
Hillarious that despite the push for toys it made tomino the director of the series make it more and more violent the more toys were pushed culminating in victory gundam thats just a complete bloodbath, you cant find a director more based than tomino anywhere else.
Also, all adults are evil.
I always found it interesting how Gundam and Star Trek shared a similar production history (cancellation, got big in syndication, fans essentially brought the show back to life, leading to many spin offs), all within a decade of each other.
Whenever I try to explain the ubiquity of Gundam in Japan, I say that it is "The Japanese equivalent of Star Trek". Even if you don't know it, you know OF it.
The same thing happened with Space Battleship Yamato and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
@@PowerPandaMods My favorite description isn't too far off, although perhaps more tonally accurate than literally: 'it started out trying to be the Japanese Star Wars, and failed so hard it came out the other end and succeeded as the Japanese Star Trek'.

Just mentioning Minovsky Particle effects and how they justify the setting's need for Mobile Suits is really appreciated; when other people try to do a UC Gundam explainer they miss on important details like that.

One of the .. maybe lesser known series?.. 08th MS Team had some great moments to show the 'real robot' aspects which I loved. Digging into the gears of the ankles to clear out clogging due to sand. Altering the beam saber power so that it could melt ice rather than cut through metal. Stuff like that made it one of the more interesting flavors for me
Then the Apsalas exists. XD
Remember "Bernie's burger" shop????
08th MS Team is definitely one of my favorite UC stories.
Its potrait the real mechanics into the earth gravity and earth enviroment plus the military story of wars in the forest
Too bad the plot and characters are paper-thin and forgettable. Sure, you could say the action scenes and music are good but all that merits can be experienced with clips on RUclips. There is a reason why Char Aznable, Amuro, Sayla or Lalah still remembered and loved to this day but only a few fans really care that much about Shiro and his "shounen main female character" Zeon waifu
One of the truly great franchises out there. Not every story lands for me, but it’s awesome to see it thriving even today.
It has been compared to Star Wars

I knew Syd Mead was the designer on Turn A Gundam. I had no idea that he was tapped for a western Gundam movie well before that. It kinda makes sense now and seems less arbitrary that Tomino would all the sudden turn the reigns over to him.
Gundam is essentially WW2 in space, with honorable enemies, mass death of civilians and traumatized youth pressed into being soldiers, having to kill or be killed.

Practically all Gundam Alternate Universes approach it the same way though. That's why you have Char clones, Amuro clones, and later even Heero Yui clones, I mean the 00 cast is full of blatant swaps for the Wing cast. For IBO, writer Mari Okada watched all of Gundam and took bits of pieces from everything . Don't get me wrong, there's still a huge chance that a live action version will fail (and it probably will) but the approach doesn't seem foreign to Gundam to me. Most Alternate Universes are ultimately trying to bring new fans into the franchise while a lot of Universal Century productions do not hold your hand and expect you to know everything that came before.
@@anthonycollado2447 Yup, AUs were exactly made for that reason. UC was getting stale so they threw G Gundam in to spice things up. It worked and AUs have been around ever since.

Coming off of Gundam Wing, I watched the original on Toonami and ended up liking it even more. It had head into it's final arc, getting REALLY good, when Amuro had to go against Char's Gelgoog custom, when 9/11 happened and we got an episode of dragon ball in it's place. Then, on 9/12 we got gundam back in that time slot one more time, having skipped the episode that would have aired before it. But that would be the last time it would ever air on toonami. It was double dragon ball reruns after that. I was so saddened...
Try Netflix. They have the original and several other versions. The only drawback is they don't have Wing or the follow up endless night.

Tomino came to Chicago a while back when the novel was rereleased and I got a my copy signed.
It hasn't even been 25 minutes but this is a great episode.
Hell yeah it is!
There is a movie poster for "Char's Counterattack" hanging in my bedroom. This episode really warms my heart.
"Char's Counterattack" was my entry into Gundam; first saw it in 1990. Back then, a lot of anime stateside was bootleg, often lacked subtitled translations, never mind dubbing in English. The movie got me interested in exploring the rest of the Gundam universe. Decades later, I got "Char's Counterattack" on Blu-ray and other official releases of some other Gundam series and movies. It's been quite a journey to see Gundam be made available in the US through official channels.
The final two minutes of this video reminded me...
There's an actual 1:1-scale model kit of Cup Noodles. :3
One of my absolute favorite franchises. Almost always dealing with darker and complex topics and themes despite its early trappings as a "kids" show. To be fair, as the video correctly stated, it was a real 'transformer' of the genre.
Let’s all hope that the live-action Netflix Gundam movie goes perfectly and doesn’t ruin anything.

Gundam has been my all time favorite franchise since watching the original 0079 Gundam movies on those subtitled vhs with my uncle. Now I'm 30 and have over 100 gunpla and build them with my son. It is truly the greatest franchise I have ever experienced. I am honestly glad it's finally getting the recognition it deserves here in the US.
Great work on researching Gundam for this episode, though any fan--myself included--knew all that already. And please, for the love of Gundam, stop saying 'transforming.'
Nah.
I mean, some Gundams do transform & combine as early as the first MSG itself. Remember G-Fighter and its various combinations with the Gundam?
Zeta Gundam is a transforming Gundam. As are several later Gundam series models. I'll allow it.
Sergeant Keroro appreciates your reminding the people of just how awesome and influential Gundam was to not only anime, but to the giant robot brand.
Little bit of a nitpick @4:44
The creators of Gundam have specifically stated that Newtypes are not simply ESPers (a catch all term for which japanese people use to reference those whom posses what we in the west call Extra Sensory Perception [which is where the term originated]) so while saying their senses are hightend and their means to percieve things are altered and superior to that of Old Types, saying Newtypes poses "extra sensory perception" walks a thin line. Generally speaking it is obviously true, but as being the next stage in a continually growing human evolution a conscious effort was made to separate them from the concept we Old Types are so familiar with.
Also, hearing you say "history of Gundam " gave me chills. I have been waiting for this for a while.
I guess it is somewhat similar to how Transformers dont "transform" anymore, they "convert"
Newtype is a whole philosophical concept that could get its own video (maybe on Wisecrack LOL). It's like a cross between plain-old ESPers, "children of the stars", X-Men style mutants as the future of humanity, and a broader concept of "children of war" - something we see IRL with folks who have lived their entire lives amid a country at war, or in a post-war recovery, as Tomino et al.
One of the great strengths of Gundam is that you can come for the cool robots as a kid, and return for the philosophical sci-fi as an adult.
"Espers" has been used by U.S. science fiction authors for decades.
@@mandisaw If Homo Superior ever rises, we Homo Sapiens Sapiens have had it. We'll be dead meat.

Universal Century is the best gundam timeline.
War in the pocket is my favorite as it embodies Tomino's message the most.
After he spent Double Zeta parodying the franchise.
Given how hard Tomino seems to have taken the toy company's changes to the original series, I guess parodying that show's excesses might have been fun for him.
Ironic cause it was also the first Gundam show not directed by him.
@@baloowailey6278 Tomino shines more as a writer for me. I love the novel/manga version of Char's counterattack.
It showed amuro as the perfect anagram to char.
Any chance you could look at the other giant robots, especially Getter Robo?
He did Shogun Warriors
I kinda doubt Shogun Warriors explained each individual series at least back then. Honestly revisting the old super robot series requires own dedicated video especially Getter Robo. Most folks probably remember Getter Robo Dragon more then the Original Getter Robo or Shin Getter Robo.
I’m in the age range that started with Gundam Wing in 2000 and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. U.C. Is my favorite timeline and I’m not a huge fan of Wing anymore but man I’m grateful that it came to the states 21 years ago.
The day i decided to get into Gundam, i decided to watch from the beginning. Actually i haven't watched wing yet, lol. But did watch the earlier ones starting with the original. I'll get there... But from pictures I'm amazed that ball robot (made by Amuro) keeps appearing. Is it like the theme of Star Wars? (if you know who made C-3PO). Of course the beam lasers are an obvious reference as well.
Gundam Wing was the entry point of this series for me and it will never leave. Great job on condensing all that history into 25 mins video.
So does this have anything to do with Unicorn's Olympic cameos, and the BBC not knowing what it is? The timing just matches up so well.
I mean, the show was a real 'transformer' of the genre.

Gundam basically changed Japan forever, in a good way of course, I wish I could ever create something as timeless as this, great episode.
My father was a big model builder, so we spent a lot of time in the Hungates hobby shop at our local mall. They had a selection of SD Gundam models that drew my 7 years old attention like nothing else. It took a lot of work on my part, but I eventually convinced my parents to let me get a Gundam Nise, and I've loved Gundam since.
I'd never heard of Nise before and i want a gunpla of it so bad now
Weird. I'm 47 and definitely remember watching Gundam as a kid. maybe it was a local broadcast in the 80s. It was on along with StarBlazers, G-Force, Tranzor Z, Ultraman and so on. Maybe whoever ran Saturday cartoons at the local network was a fan and had gotten tapes or reels.
If you were on the the West Coast, there might have been an anime fan or, even better, an in-the-know Japanese immigrant or child of an immigrant, who could have swung something for the station.
As someone on the Gulf Coast, i really didn't know Gundam until Toonami started airing Gundam Wing. But boy was I fucking hooked. Although I say I'm more of a Extended UC kinda person, really like Origin and I need to make time to really watch and mull over Unicorn.
Are you thinking of Robotech?

I had no idea Netflix / Hollywood was having a go at it. I feel like PacRim scratched the Real-Robot itch as far as mainstream audiences go.
Although I still hold out some hope that a US-made Akira could be decent, so much of Gundam is built on anti-military/"war is hell" themes that I don't think any Hollywood studio has the guts to do it justice.
Certainly in our modern box office I don't see China or the US Midwest really being keen on a properly tragic/dramatic Gundam movie.

I'd still take a Gundam movie over them trying to adapt evangelion any day. I know there's a lot of hate for evangelion and it's over the top emotional BS but I just feel like it wouldn't be given as do whereas Gundam kind of has a flavor that works better even with its more war is hell attitude. They'd still try to fit it all on a PG-13 movie though that much I am sure of.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu I don't even know what a PG-13 Hollywood Eva movie would look like - no sexual/incest themes, no awkwardly long stretches of painful, pregnant silence, and no Q'abbalah for Dummies crossed with OT Christian imagery?? 8th MS Team was one of my favorite series. Showing a more “on the ground” setting with minimal overpowered gundam protagonist
Same here, Shiro Amada's love Story with Aina was awesome. Kind of like a more grounded to Science fact, or rather Real Robot to name the actual terminology, reinterpretation of the Super Robot series Toushó Daimos's Romeo and Juliet-esque plot. Plus if I recall correctly there were no NewTypes in 08th Mobile Suit too, which makes the series even more grounded.
Definitely the best of the series. Although it would have been even better without the romance plot or the inevitable super-weapon.
There is also igloo, specifically the s2, it focused on ground battles such as the battle of odessa

Amuro got house arrested after the OYW and spend the rest of his life dealing with PTSD while slowly being absorbed into the system of the Fed's military. Kamille got brain damaged from the end of Zeta with maybe some hope of recover. Judau failed in his journey got fed up with Earth and fucked off to Jupiter. Char is Char.

I'm proud to say I knew about Gundam a full decade before Wing premiered on Toonami. I had seen 0080, 0083, Chars Counterattack, and F91 all with no subs thanks to a college friend in the early 90s. I had no idea what was going on , but it was awesome. nearly 30 years later I have pretty much every series dubbed or subbed thanks to Bandai America, and later Sunrise for picking up the slack after the former stopped making DVDs.
Counterattack is good, something went sideways with F91.
Back in the 90s, I wore out VHS subs of 0083 and 0079 - looking right now at the Bandai VHS release of the movies, and the deluxe DVD box of Zeta 😎

How about a full MSG set that includes "Cucuruz Doan's Island," episode 15 that Tomino hated?
Hrm, I think a lot more Newtype shenanigans since you'd have a more full animation budget. The Space battles in Movie 3 (Encounters in Space) are a damn acid trip sometimes.
Direct from Toy Galaxy: Mobile Suit Gundam ( 機動戦士ガンダム, Hepburn: Kidō Senshi Gandamu, also known as First Gundam, Gundam 0079 or simply Gundam '79) was a ratings failure causing the episode count to be reduced and the story cut short. But it did introduce the world to RX-78-2. Then Bandai stepped in with their model kits and created what would eventually be known around the world as Gunpla. Mobile Suit Gundam was eventually imported to the US where it was again a ratings failure... twice! ruclips.net/video/cbZGWJl5-2g/видео.html
The biggest problem I feel like they ran into when bringing it to the US was it was on toonami the timing was poor considering the whole September 11th thing and on top of that the fact they started with wing and then went back to the original series definitely did them no favors.
The other problem was the original series especially though actiony has lots of non-actiony parts that I'm sure made it difficult for the younger viewership. We're talking about a channel that had stuff like DBZ and outlaw Star stuff much more attuned to the sensibilities of it's audience.
My intro to Gundam was the English translation of the novelization of the of series. I am surprised no mention of the live action movie that did come out back in wing days. Granted it was beyond terri-bad with nightmare inducing cgi
Oh, geeze, I used to work with one of the guys that helped translate those books, Fred Patten, when I was at Streamline Pictures in 1996. He was one of the founders of the C/FO, the Cartoon Fantasy Organization, in the 70s.
Yeah, G-Saviour is kind of the black sheep of the Gundam family, even though its had worse incarnations.
“Voltes V” is actually pronounced as “Voltes 5”
That’s Correct. In Japan, the anime title is Super Electro Magnetic Machine Voltes Five.
I was expecting hundreds of Pinoy fans to correct Dan on properly reading Voltes V
Maybe Dan watched the US version of Voltes V where it was called Voltus V, also its name in the Mattel Shogun Warriors toyline.
Maybe it was called ‘V’ not ‘Five’.*
Conversely, Combatra’s real Japanese title was Super Electro Magnetic Robot Combattler V , V - as the theme says, stands for- V! V! V! (for) Victory.
* Daimos was screened in the US as Starbirds (shown once on ABS-CBN 2, as was the complete original Daimos anime), Mazinger Z was known as Tranzor Z; Getter Robo as Staravengers, UFO Robo Grendaizer as Goldrake, and Starzinger as Spaceketeers (at least they didn’t change the name of Princess Aurora ❤️😇 in that one!)
In several cases, when the TV movie of the US version is seen, the first episode is screened in full, then the gist of the series is compressed over the remaining hour.
Still better than the 1980s G. I. Joe cartoon though as Japanese anime and a lot of its US adaptations (ie: Space Battleship Yamato; Macross; Science Rescue Technoboyager), while still tied to merchandaise and toys/videos/etc. STILL focused on Story and Character FIRST!
In the big Gundam timelines, there is both "Hathaway" and "Stargazer." Coincidentally, those are both names of Constellation class starships in Star Trek.
Also there was an SNES Gundam fighting game. I believe it came out in 94 in Japan only. The US of Guns didn’t get it
Sheath Underwear feels comfortable while piloting a Gundum.
Meanwhile the Scotts are wearing kilts in their Gundam.
I was wondering what does Sheath Underwear have to do with Toy Galaxy, let alone Gundam. With G.I. Joe, I understand, but Gundam?
I wonder if Dan and his team are wearing Sheath Underwear during filming...
Gundam for the next 2 years?
RETSU GOOOO!!!!!
😎👍
Considering that the RX-78 is a prototype, it being colorful isn't an surprise - it would have to show off to the military brass, full of pomp. It is a toy...for those who pilot desks and wield the pen like a sword.
Gundam 79 is my favorite anime of all time.
I'd go with Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers, but that's just me.
I honestly prefer the movie trilogy over the anime
Of course my favorite IP episode gets the underwear infomercial.
Oh I see
Anime ja nai! Anime ja nai
Hontou no koto sa!
This is not anime, This isn't anime
this is reality!
- Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
--while watching the actual anime--
So glad to see Gundam make it here, been watching it since the 90's and enjoyed most every series and game. SEIG ZEON!!!
Finally, my favorite toy channel discussing my favorite Japanese robot franchise.🙂
15:44 Excuse me, WHAT!?
THERE'S AN UNIVERSAL CENTURY BATTLETECH-LIKE TABLETOP GAME !? How in the 9 blue hells wasn't I aware of this before ?
I too would like to know more about it. Might actually make a tabletop player out of me.
I wonder if that's what the Gihren's Greed games are based on.
@@nicodalusong149 Imagine trashing legions of GMs with an urbanmech
Or taking an Atlas to a Gundam Fight
I guess the closest thing the U. S. of AmeriGUNS has to realistic human-shaped, human-piloted, giant war machine robots is Pacific Rim. It just replaced all the political anti-war themes and deep characterizations with punching monsters. America! Heck yeah! 🌭🍔🎇
The Gundam franchise is my favorite in all of anime. Gundam Wing was my introduction to the franchise, and it would be easier to name the Gundam series or OVAs I *haven't* watched start to finish, since then. There's multiple series, the original included, I've watched three times. It's interesting how Gundam is similar to Star Trek, in that both got cancelled in their original run, but would become massive afterward. I don't think Star Trek is nearly as big as Gundam, but I'm biased.
Finally, this video was worth the wait.
Fell in love with the franchise after building my first kit. And as with most fans who started with the series, we got our first taste here in the Philippines with Gundam Wing. And then I wanted more. Good thing, G Gundam and Gundam X were also shown here after Gundam Wing, so these shows were beloved by the Pinoy fanbase.
I would save my allowance to purchase my first kit, a 1/100 HG Gundam Wing Zero Custom. Back in the 90s, ₱1000 was a lot of money for a high school student. So gunpla taught me the value of money and saving money so you can buy what you want.
Haven’t watched , but I do build a lot GunPla, really into the engineering and design, especially with the new RG and MG model kits . Did watch Wing(Toonami) and Unicorn (RUclips)
You should check out the new Gundam movie that came out for Netflix this year
Gundam showed me the consequences of war through War in the Pocket. That shit hit me right into my heart, and made me not eat hamburger for a week.
