The thing people never talk about is the idea that a great deal of tone is in your fingers. Sure, your fingers won't give you high gain distortion, but it's the idea that the greats understand every small thing you do with your fingers contributes to the musicality of your playing: where you're picking, how you pick, the amount of vibrato. It's like steve vai says: a lot of work starts how you imagine your playing should sound, because as you spend time with the instrument and listen to what you're doing, your fingers will create what your brain creates.
Been watching lesson vids on RUclips for so many years Many go too slow! Others too fast and the rest the instructors are in need of some serious lessons starting with how to even tune their guitar But you my man are a born natural at playing and how to give lessons! Perfection! Subscribed and am excited about taking my skills to the next level using your instruction! Thank you!
Everyone compliments you on your talent but me because talent is a gift. I compliment you on your hard work that you obviously invested in or you wouldn't be the great guitarist that you are.
This dude is humble and that makes him a Gladiator... You kick total ass... Ya just made me go grab my axe and jam... He is the main reason I pick up up guitar... Six months later after my first couple of lessons. I was jamming 5 keg parties and boy did that helped me land some beautiful gals... thanks Eddie.. and I appreciate your help in finally playing them licks the correct way
I know you've been givin props plenty of times and this video is a little older but I gotta say, dude, thank you so much! I've seen lots of 'how to shred like EVH' vids but then all they do is shred full speed and say ok, there ya go. But you slow down and explain so well, thanks sir. New subscriber.
So much respect and appreciation for tone-through-technique. Your instruction is a perfect combination of straightforward efficiency and attention to detail. Outstanding.
I've been trying to do tapping and EVH tricks for years, but my sound was always weak and uneven. I just recently realized, and I've NEVER heard anyone mention it, that he probably uses a compressor to bring up the weak notes and bring down the louder notes, basically evening out the volume of everything. I also noticed you have a Compressor-Sustainer in your set up there, so am I right in assuming this is a huge part of being able to successfully play this stuff? If so, then isn't the compressor pedal just as important as those other three you mentioned? Thanks sir, great lesson and subscribed.
Compression definitely can smooth out your taps but it comes at a cost; tone. A compressor squeezes frequency range so you lose high and low end making the tone not quite as fat. The amount of compression from a super loud amp on 10 like Eddie plays makes things pop out easier but I don't have the luxury to play on 10 here in my little office so I use an attenuator which is not the same so a compressor makes up the difference. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for the suggestion. Currently I am battling severe arthritis in my pinky so it may be a while until I can tackle that one, but thanks for watching and commenting!

Sorry there is no tab for that, I was just jamming in the EVH style. The tab for the lesson portion of the video is in the description. Thanks for watching and for the kind words. :)
Hey thanks so much for the lesson! I had a quick question: On the screen when you are running through the scales Fig. 5 and 6 pop up. Are those tabs? And where can I see them? Thanks again!
Its really cool of you to do this kind of stuff. For all the idiots saying its a waste of time, you should be yourself and not copy Eddie, well it makes some people happy to be able to copy something they like and if you learn enough of other peoples styles, you can incorporate them into what just might become your own style. I don't know why people have to be rude and say stupid shit instead of just shutting up. And so what if you didn't know what album unchained was on, who cares??!! Some jerk mentioned a one trick pony who made the same album ten times, what an ads, Eddie was a pioneer and as much as I didn't care for it, he moved into keyboards also. Sorry about this rant, I've just seen so many stupid comments today from people who don't know anything about what they are speaking of. Thanks again for taking the time to do this. Just to really prove my point, I'd like to say that I'm not really into Eddies style to point of wanting to sound like him, I prefer styles like Andy LaRoque and George Lynch, but I like to learn a little of all styles and appreciate guys like you who take time to help others. End of rant.
I’ve got the same guitar. I bought it NOS. But the trem doesn’t stay in place. The thumbscrew comes loose. Do you guys have a nylon washer in there or so?
Yup, Soldano with an attenuator so I can crank it up past 7. I played through half a JCM 900 cab with 75w celestions. Thanks for the kind words and for watching! All the best in 2020 to you!
This guy really rocks and although I do not (yet) play the guitar, I do play drums and piano and have been a die hard VH fan all my life. Since Eddie and Alex come from The Netherlands and (both?) started their musical careers playing the piano, there might be some possibilities for me in the not so near future to make some first steps trying to play the guitar. PS I just stumbled upon this guitar hero teacher today and hope I will find similar videos about another of my guitar heroes, Tom Morello (and I am very happy to see HIM perform again in NL with Prophets of Rage in just a few weeks. Now it is just a matter of hoping, “praying” and wishful thinking to see if VH will rock again in NL.

Amazing most of this was 40+ yrs ago. I heard tapes he did in the mid 70s of licks/riffs he would whip out much later. I was 16 when VH1 dropped and quit guitar for a month. The "experts" were certain it was all studio magic and black boxes. It was not until Spanish Fly most were convinced Ed was the real deal.

Pick Harmonic = Pinch Harmonic. Nitpicking here - Pinch harmonic seems to be the more common term, possibly because "pinching" is more descriptive of how the harmonic is achieved and you can play a pinch harmonic without a pick. Nice lesson, thanks.

Hey there,I'm one of your very recent subscriber and in love with your content already ! I actually love music and would like to take up learning to play a guitar but I'm a total novice .I want to play like Eddie mostly so could you guide me to what All gear do I need in terms of the type of the guitar,it's configuration, the type of amp and wether or not I need effect pedals . Thanks and a happy new year 😊
@@squash2127 hey thanks for the reply ,I am surly willing to dedicate a good chunk of time everyday towards the whole learning process , Thank you again 😊I subbed !
You could take shortcut and just buy the 5150III15W LBX Head and a 2x12 cab and you are off to a great start amp and cabwise. For guitars, just look for any strat type guitar with a humbucker and a wang bar and you should be good to go. Make sure it is a humbucker. Plug that into that 15w amp cranked up and you should have close to Eddie tone. Good luck and thanks for subbing! www.evhgear.com/gear/amps/?page=2
@@UptempoMusicLessons thank you so much for this information,it is so very helpful to me as a beginner, enough to set me on a correct path ,I am very inspired by your style of playing ,keep rocking mahn Amen brother !!!
Thanks Tom! I am playing through the Soldano HR50+ and I have a boss compressor pedal before it, also using an attenuator so I can get a bit more of the output tube tone involved.
How could there be any thumbs down? Haters, go pay for years of lessons to get this then, geez man. Dude you are an awesome teacher and obviously a fantastic guitarist. Thanks - TOES & THUMBS UP. God Bless EVH! \m/
Thanks! It is possible if I already have them I just do it by donation, but I charge out at $60 an hour if I have to transcribe it from scratch so you have to REALLY REALLY want a tab pretty bad lol!
Do You have a list of the songs that You have tabs for? Anyway I think I’m most interested in tabs for “new” songs, but the price is to high. I have others making tabs for me for a much lower price. My highest price would be 60 dollars for a whole song (not per hour).
Fair warning is my all time favorite album. Lots of really cool stuff on it. Push comes to shove, mean streets, dirty movies, more serious stuff you didn’t see on other albums.
Hi up-tempo, I apologize! Maybe I was a little bit off the chain.I'm sorry that I got a little frustrated trying to learn from your site, and when it is as important as Eddie Van Halen licks. I should have been a little more patient. It is hard to use the controls on RUclips sometime to keep up with what you're doing.I apologize again I didn't know that you had the tabs on the the descriptions below. Next time I guess I should look before I leap. I'm sure it's a lot of work trying to put a package together like up-tempo, and it probably takes a lot of your time. And it's good that someone like you, that takes the time to try to help others. You're a good man for doing that. When I started learning to play the guitar back when I was 18 we didn't even have tabs and we certainly didn't have You Tube. It was even hard to find music books that were in tabs, and unfortunately I don't have a very good ear for music. I remember buying the first Van Halen album back when they first came out. I've loved Van Halen ever since. I apologize again and thank you up-tempo fo giving me an opportunity to do so. Thank you again And keep up the good work. Todd P.
Hey Todd, no problem my friend. I could understand how frustrating it would be to not have tabs for this. I now put tab in my actual videos, but back then I did not have the knowledge how to do that yet. I am still learning and hopefully getting better at this. Thanks for taking the time to comment, for the kind words and for watching. All the best!
When Eddie first appeared every guitarist wanted to throw away their guitar...lol We never heard stuff like that. Thanks for the vid ...your great at playing this too!
You sound great man!! My question for you is when you tap on your strings they seem very sensitive to touch creating a much brighter note. I'm guessing that's a Peavey. I Plug my Ibanez into a Fender Mustang ll with built in effects but don't get near as much. Is it your overdrive pedal or what? I've got my gain all the way up and it doesn't matter. I have been watching Eddie loyally since 1984 and I do understand it comes from the heart through the fingers and you can't paint like Picasso. But I feel that electronics is key.
so straight forward - no ego, just generous thorough clear instruction - fantastic.

Thanks and a happy new year 😊
Look up the gear to get the “brown sound” also your not gonna get there over night. Takes practice. A lot of practice.
@@UptempoMusicLessons thank you so much for this information,it is so very helpful to me as a beginner, enough to set me on a correct path ,I am very inspired by your style of playing ,keep rocking mahn
Amen brother !!!
Thanks for the lesson
RIP Eddie
Are you planning through one of those amps ? You have the phrasing and overall vibe really well. Very well done
Thanks Tom! I am playing through the Soldano HR50+ and I have a boss compressor pedal before it, also using an attenuator so I can get a bit more of the output tube tone involved.
UptempoMusicLessons hope that you post some more. This was so well done and fun to watch too. Thanks for your reply
Thanks Tom! Check out my Van Halen lesson, video two, just uploaded a few days ago. All the best!
How could there be any thumbs down? Haters, go pay for years of lessons to get this then, geez man. Dude you are an awesome teacher and obviously a fantastic guitarist. Thanks - TOES & THUMBS UP. God Bless EVH! \m/
Thanks so much for the kind words and for watching!
Cool video! Is it possible to buy tabs for specific songs from You?
My highest price would be 60 dollars for a whole song (not per hour).
is that an Echoplex box setting on top of the amp?
Affirmative.
Great video and great playing!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching Brian!
Unchained ...Fair Warning was the album.
Yup, I realized that after I shot the vid. Temporary memory loss is a beotch. Thanks for watching!
Fair warning is my all time favorite album. Lots of really cool stuff on it. Push comes to shove, mean streets, dirty movies, more serious stuff you didn’t see on other albums.
@@user-qr7ee2cp4y It's a rager! Thanks for watching!

amazing lesson... thank you
Thanks for tuning in!
Awesome thanks
Welcome 😊
What kind of distortion are you using to get that sound man? Absolutely love it!
That is tube distortion, no pedals, they suck lol. That is a master volume Soldano HR50+. Thanks for watching!
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you again
And keep up the good work.
When Eddie first appeared every guitarist wanted to throw away their guitar...lol
We never heard stuff like that. Thanks for the vid ...your great at playing this too!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching Bob!
Thanks for the kind words! You need to have low action meaning get a proper setup from a qualified tech. Then tapping should be a breeze. Good luck!
Best instruction EVER! Great find. :0)
Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
Great work thanks a lot!
Thanks for watching Roy. Please sub.
