Some trivia on Nate the Rat ! Nate Whitlock, brother to Bobby Whitlock who was the Organ & Piano player in the rock band a Derek and the Dominoes . You know the song Layla, Bell Bottom Blues and more ! RIP Nate
Kowabunga, The Karate Wrestling Turtle was "Wildside" Chris Champion in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle bodysuit and mask became a wildly popular in the USWA territory at the time when TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES movie came out at the time.
Portland Wrestling did something similar with Bart Sawyer when The Simpsons were popular: He comes out as an adult version of Bart Simpson complete with "Do The Bartman" as his theme music. Thankfully, Bart had the look to pull it off, so no big changes were needed. WWE even had the Toxic Turtles for a spell that went nowhere.
Thanks for the context there. I always see all this crazy one off hidden history of wrestling and wonder about who the guys were and if they ever had a modicum of success.
lol as terrible as these are, there's almost something charming and innocent about it. Many wrestling fans reminisce on late 80s and early 90s wrestling because of that cartoonish charm. But this is like watching a VHS of a "bunch of cartoons you never even knew existed".

4:34... to be COMPLETELY fair... that's not a bad gimmick for the time. Maybe the performer's EXECUTION of it was dicey, but you can't call Jake the Snake Roberts a legend, and then completely dismiss a rat obsessed psycho character. He gave me a Rat King vibe from ninja turtles lmao. If they would have given that gimmick a better acclimated actor, that could have gone SOMEWHERE. maybe not all the way, but SOMEWHERE.
Overrated? Are you kidding me? We are not like the Dallas Cowboys who truly are overrated, overhyped, and irrelevant. Memphis Wrestling had a lot of great history. Think of the many wrestlers that were in WWE, WCW, ECW, TNA, and AEW that actually came through Memphis first.
That’s one thing I disagree with Cornette on. He knocks World Class and the Von Erich’s which was insanely good wrestling but puts everything Memphis on a pedestal. Memphis wrestling was corny, hillbilly crap on a stick.
@@Narrate918 cornette loves talking about how over lawler was it was the same 5-7 thousand people at mid south coliseum every week.the guy was over in one zip code🤣
@@bb-gc2txdrawing the same 5 -7 thousand people to the same building every week for decades is very impressive actually. Also most of these gimmicks are way after the prime era of Memphis wrestling.
Proof that not EVERYONE that comes out of a box gets over

Yomamba!
Kudos to Vintage for not editing out Tommy Rich's laugh after the promo of Yomamba; that's what made the moment funny to me.

Mark Curtis ( Brian Hildebrand) Did the gimmick in Smokey Mountain Wrestling
I remember this guy. It was an interesting gimmick for Memphis Wrestling. I loved it.

Is that Ole Anderson talking at @3:32? lol
Clearly, that was the Shockmaster.

Jerry Lawler was a 96 time USWA champ
If you make a hard cut or fade to black at 1:06 it will drastically change the direction of that vignette...
Yomamba. Wrestling's greatest mystery.
Whoa… Wow. Bad? This is absolutely DEPLORABLE! 😅
4:15 Jim Nabors was a wrestler?
Well, GALL - LEE, I didn’t know that

Never knew Steve-O worked for Memphis Wrestling dressed as a Ninja Turtle.
Well, actually, it was Chris Champion ("Wildside") dressed in a Ninja Turtle bodysuit and mask known as "Kowabunga."
He right cause he got in trouble for messing with young girls and that's why Lawler and Jarrett Fired him
When wrestling was fun!

Mick Foley, when he started as Mankind, had in the build to his debut a spot where Foley would interact with a mouse named George.
Who was Ta-gar

Joke's on you! That ninja turtle went to the WWF in 1992, and he held the world title until Wrestlemania 24 😂😂
