@@maddawgnolla half ton truck towing or hauling and having a gross weight rating of 15000+ lbs is gunna be putting down 400+ ft-lbs through 17:1 gear reduction(nearly 5:1 1st gears and 3.5:1 axles) over long periods since it takes time to get that much weight moving. The tires have to cope with that. They are dealing with almost 8000 ft-lbs at the tire. It takes them 15-20 seconds to hit 60 mph.
A 911 Turbo floored for the same amount of time would be doing 150 mph and well out of first gear. The tires are not coping with sustained high torque of a truck

The bigger problem with tires is load ranges. Manufactures seriously lack proper load ranges for the vehicles that they’re being used on. A 4 runner that drives around at 5000 lbs does NOT need a 10 ply load range E tire but that’s what majority of them are. It makes a massive difference on ride quality and tire weight to have proper load ranges. We need to see more of these manufactures come out with proper load ranges for application like a STD, C or D for jeeps, small trucks, and SUV’s.

The best value and performance combination that I found after going through several sets of tires in 24 years is that too 8575R 16 all-terrain tire
My favorite is made in the land of smiles Cambodia by A company named ling long they also are called crosswind tires. They are nicely made hold up well and perform really well income with a 50,000 mile treadwear warranty but I’ve never had to use.
I special ordered them online from Walmart for $600 a set which is far cheaper than most the other tires I purchased . Mounted, balanced, new valve, stems road, hazard warranty and lifetime balance and rotation for the package ends up costing about $830
I’d like to buy American products but I wasn’t happy with the last two set of Cooper tires I went through
So long story short, my preference is to buy a tire that works well but not super expensive so I can replace them every three or four years at the most.

I have the new Toyo open country R/T “ Trail” on my 2019 GMC 3500 single rear wheel 4X4 diesel truck and I love them. I also pull regularly a 14,000 pound toy hauler and they handle extremely well, pulling my trailer and not pulling my trailer. They handle very good and snow and ice not pulling my trailer. And they handle extremely well on mud, sand, red clay, and soft dirt, pulling and not pulling my trailer. I have approximately 32,000 miles on my tires and they are wearing extremely well. I have never had a tire on my truck that handles so good on and off-road. The only thing I can tell you that I’ve noticed big-time with these tires is the first rain or two of the season. With all the oil on the asphalt, these tires do lose traction pretty easily during that time. But after the third or fourth rain or so of the season, they start to handle very well. And I forgot to mention these tires are very quiet for a RT tire. I was going to look at possibly getting the new Mickey Thompson’s for my next tire, but I truly love the way these to handle on my heavy duty truck.
I have had the stock OEM tires on my truck when I first bought it and then I put on a set of all-terrain Les Schwab tires and I was not happy with them. The Toyota open country R/T trails tires are truly in my opinion the best all-terrain tires you can have on a heavy duty truck if you go off road or live in an area that has heavy rain and snow. Because these tires do not have a lot of typing on the tread blocks when you are driving in snow and ice I drop my drive axle tires down to around 25 to 30 psi and my steer axle tires down to around 35 to 40 psi. When I go off-road and driving on nothing but dirt, I drop my air pressure on all four tires down to around 15 to 25 PSI. But I gotta say overall I am extremely happy with these tires.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the Toyota open country tires do not hold rocks and fling them everywhere once you get back on the road .

Most people don’t do this. They buy a tire for looks and then run what the sticker on the truck says for PSI, even though it’s way out of spec once you start going from an all season to an all terrain or mud terrain and going to bigger sizes and different load ratings. But yes, I agree. A chalk test is definitely needed when changing tire types but people being ignorant of what you said causes premature wear and then they blame the tire for wearing unevenly.

I think the right lesson is having manufacturers make tires that we want to buy that we can actually use. There's not one tire that's good for everyone. We as customers should have the options we want and we don't always want the same thing. We all shouldn't have to settle for the same tire as we all are doing different things with our trucks. Me personally, i bought a f350 single wheel and have 33x12.50x20 tires on it. I wanted a slightly more aggressive tread pattern but tow really heavy sometimes. My trailer weighs 11k with empty and i haul wheel loaders, skid loaders, and farm tractors. My truck is 500hp and 1200tq and i just went on a 1200 mile round trip to get 2 farm tractors. Was i kinda nervous about my tires holding up? Yes. Was i going to get a tire that was only going to do one thing? No. I need a tire that will go good off road, go good in snow, drive decent, and be able to haul a load. Instead of us having to settle, the manufacturers should give us more options

I live in the mountains where it snows with ice during the winter but it’s also southern California so it’s 1,000,000° down the hill and I also use my truck for roofing which requires heavy hauling 😭

So what tires would you recommend for towing a 17k lb fifth wheel RV with a 2022 GMC SIERRA 3500HD AT4 Crew Cab Long Bed 6.6 Duramax Allison 10 speed transmission?
We had ply separation on an OEM Goodyear Wrangler with only 25k miles this weekend.

I've been running Cooper STT Pro's on an 8500 pound truck pushing around 1000 pounds of torque, I can attest to this being outside the design parameters of the tread. Shopping for new tires now actually.

The red Cooper ST Maxx may serve your torque needs.

@jameseroh6544 I considered those as well, ended up going with Yokohama Geolander M/T G003's. Only a few hundred miles on them now, towed once but only 5000 pounds. They float on the tall tread blocks a bit but otherwise so far so good. Way quieter than the old Cooper's but that might just be because they're new.

There is a lot of truth to this… long term relationships, with good shops can get around this but it can be rough out there. My hometown favorite shop that I went to for 15 years had so much turnover they did recognize me, they tried to sell me bad tires and they would mess up 2/3 tire mountings… finally gave up and got my own tire machine…

  • @Graveltrucking
    @Graveltrucking 3 месяца назад

The big problem is they don't want to run a truck tire. The half ton midsize trucks would ride like sh*t with a load range E tire. Manufactures are making these trucks with more power so in turn you get a lot more rim pull. I'll stick with F350 pick ups that sport tires that have more tire than wheel. The 275/70R18 tires don't have issues.

The consumer buying the large mud terrains really don’t care about the tire life. It’s because they look good for peacocking in your truck. If they wear prematurely just buy another set. If it was value and long life they were looking for they would stick with stock tires
