When Neil Peart kept a blog on his website, I remember him describing playing with Gregg Bissonette as a "humbling experience."
Wow!
Neil dis not have a practice space in L A Greg let him use his private practice space , Also Jethro Tulls drummer Doanne Perry , who was also Neils best friend
@@squamishfishthat’s interesting. I never knew that. That must have been when Neil first moved to LA
@@MyVideos-fm7ug there is a video Greg just released talking about Neil , On RUclips, Also Chad Smith did a remembrance video of Neil ,
I remember it too. I called Gregg right after I read Neil's take and Gregg told me almost word for word what Neil posted. My 2 favorite drummers.
Greg doesn't get enough accolades for his hugely diverse and incredible drumming. He's a MONSTER drummer of all styles.
I was lucky enough to be able to attend a few of those promotional drum workshops things for a bit.
I still pull ideas from that hour with Mr. Bissonette. I got absolutely nothing from the Mark Portnoy one (except he apparently doesn't think highly of Phil Rudd).
@@quintessenceSL do you mean mike portnoy?
@@nicolasreny221 Yeah, my bad.
He has a good heart and is a well-educated man. The industry only likes to promote douches :)
Completely agree!
We can learn more than drumming from Mr. Bissonette; learn to be be better humans! Thank you so much for all the inspiration - drumming and with life.
Well put!
Excellent statement
Amen.
Completely agree! Todd Sucherman is the same way.
GodBless you for not saying:
“We can learn more then drumming from Mr. B.” Edit: im all about simple pleasures these days as they have made the last two generations of kids literally dumber then boxes of roxes.
This is why Neil will never really leave us. World-class drummers like Gregg will keep telling stories like this. Thank you Gregg!
I think of him more and more as time passes.
Bissonette is a great drummer with chops! But he’s also musical as hell! The fact that he honored Neil like this is just wonderful
Right let me check how elite your drum lessons are...
Musical, yes! Just like his hero, Ringo!
Neil was a special drummer. Rush was the best. I miss them. Your 3/4 playing was incredible!! Wow!!
Well said.🇦🇺
I second that. Well Played @Gregg Bissonette
A drummers drummer. As a regular listener it triggered my ADD.😂
Gregg, thank you for the "Double Drum with Neil" Video. It was more than a tribute. You are a true ambassador of music.
That is the most variations of 3/4 I have ever heard in one stretch. And you didn't repeat any licks that I could recall... A beautiful thing. Neil would be proud! Rest in Power, Professor.
Gregg, I'll never forget coming over to your house and playing double drumset with you too Gregg! You passed it down to me, just like Neil did for you. As a 40 year Drummer, I learned soooo much from you! Ever grateful for that. Also few months later I remember seeing a video of Neil playing on the exact same kit I used at your house - that was cool! ;)
Hell yea, Manic Depression! Loved it!!! 🔥🔥🔥
You killed it Greg ! And Neal Pert used to come over and Jamm! WOW ! That says everything about you!
Greg is an awesome drummer and a class act. Thanks for sharing your memories of Neil.
Gregg you are such an inspiration.... not only an incredibly talented musician, but a good guy all around. God Bless!
Gregg has such an enthusiasm for everything, people, music, life in general. Gregg is such a lovely person I wish I knew him and lived nearby so we could jam all the time.
Neil was a genius who sought to be more geniuser. 🙃😉🤪 On a serious note, he was my #1 rock drummer all time for 40+ years. I wept like a child when he passed.
Thank you, Gregg, for honoring us with your talent, class and recollections of our drum hero.
I met Greg through one of the worship leaders that I used to play drums for Chariya Bissonnet. Talk about being starstruck! but the dude was so cool and easy to talk to. He is just like he is in this video! Loves music can’t stop talking about his influences and the passion for learning new things. What a sweetheart of the guy. God bless you, Greg.
I was first introduced to Gregg's genius via the Eat 'em & Smile album from David Lee Roth. I was a teenager back then and just devoured this record (literally, the record...imagine that!). I've followed Gregg ever since and I'm always impressed by literally everything the guy does. His solo records are great! The guy isn't just a great drummer, he can sing, too! He's about as musically diverse as any artist I can think of. But most importantly, he seems like a genuinely great person and a massive fan of great drummers and musicians. His interview with Rick Beato is the best thing I've seen in ages on RUclips.
Thank you sir. 65 here and still daily in search for the feel. I truly appreciate your humor intelligence and obvious hard work ethic that comes across. Good people do good things that ripple in others lives and you are spreading the message. Thank you for your time Sir. Be safe out there.
Listening to Gregg is like therapy for my soul. Love seeing the picture of a you GB and Gene Krupa in the background!!
Man Gregg, this SO put a smile on my face! I love how you threw a little Mitch Mitchel in there, and some blushda’s. I think looking back the 3/4 time signature became Neil’s favorite meter to play (and solo) to.
Neil is my #1 drumming inspiration, and I am want to say often that I never took drum lessons. But really, my teacher was Neil. Thanks for sharing your story - it was very touching. I love your drumming and I look forward to more of your videos! 🥁
You got to know and play with my favorite drummers, Neil and Ringo! I really enjoyed your stories about Neil, he was such a special human being. Connecting with others is what music is all about. Thanks for sharing Greg, and man what a solo!!! Really good stuff!
It is amazing sharing Greg’s exact Birthday, June 9th 1959! 🥳🥺🤩
As an educator, so many drummers will live in 4 and many times don’t think about going outside the box - even in 3. What I love about this solo is the styles that Greg is modulating through. Thanks for sharing your story about Neal. I first heard him play when I was in 10th grade. I was hooked. He was so expansive in his musicality. Greg…..excellent. You’re a solid guy.
Back around 1995 I had the pleasure of meeting you at a PAS Clinic in San Antonio. I was early, sitting in the hallway with my practice pad. I turn my head and oh goodness that’s Gregg Bissonette! You were assembling a kit, and asked if I’d like to help. I was overwhelmed at first but you were so friendly and gracious and put me at ease, like I was helping an old friend. I complimented your “Private Lesson” VHS that I grew up with, and again, so gracious.
Thank you for your inspiration and kindness!
This is priceless. I have LONG said if I could morph into any drummer and steal their skills, it would be Gregg Bissonette. Gregg can play everything expertly...jazz, swing, latin, rock, pop...etc. Not only that, I have spoken to people who know Gregg and they say he is the nicest of the nice. That said, Neil was long my favorite drummer. I think a favorite is someone who inspires and no one inspired a young Tommy more than Neil. When I was in high school, not dating, I was wood shedding Rush. Some of my most cherished compliments are when people say they can hear Neil's influence in my recordings. To hear the drummer whom I'd like to model my playing after talking about the one who inspried me most is priceless. Gregg, if you're ever in Utah you have an open invitation to double drum in my studio.
That’s f*cken awesome to read.
Man would love to b a fly on the wall with u n Neil hanging , jamming. That was a great video sir thx .
Great topic Gregg! Yes, he was definitely a Renaissance Man. As a youth he was very into birdwatching, as you mentioned, and it became something that carried over into adulthood. The books he'd written are totally priceless and definitely helped open up my mind.
met Gregg last year at The baked potato in LA. Amazing drummer and a great guy!
Gregg, I met you one time at the Modern Drummer deal in 1995. I had a Dave Mathew's band concert Tee on and you asked me if I played the drums in that band. I admire what you have done with your career.
Excellent Drumming Gregg. From Las Vegas N.V.👍🎼🥁🎼👍!!!
Playing a show tomorrow night for the Peart Family Memorial Fund. His sisters will be part of the event. So looking forward to get on stage on honor such an influence in my musical life
Saw Greg with Ringo & the all stars earlier this year What a fantastic show!
No greater words of wisdom coming from a great human being and ambassador of the fellowhood of musicians.... One of the greatest joys of my life has been watching you and RINGO live (several times over the years) smiling ear to ear looking at each other while double drumming. I'm sure it brings a great joy to your heart because well It's RINGO!!!, and it definitely shows that RINGO is still having a blast playing the drums after all these years. It's infectious to everyone witnessing this live of otherwise, it brings the performance to another level and assures the audience no ones running through the paces here. So you speak with the utmost expertise when you share your experiences with others on this matter of sharing the experience of music with others of your preferred instrument. We're all lucky to have somebody like you in the world....
Thanks GREGG for all you do for the drumming community, my (our) dear old friend Lissa Wales told me you were her "favorite" person/drummer because you were truly genuine in your love of drums and human kindness. She loved that about you and after watching this it made me think of her, her words, and why I've been a fan of yours for so long....
Keep Keepin On!!! 🤘🤩🤘
Hey new guy here, I'm 62 and I will have my first drum soon. I stump here and watch many of your videos. First impression...Love your playing, great drummer you are but the most that got my attention is the way you are as a person. Your friends are lucky to have you as a friend. You got a great spirit, humour and enjoy life. I'm looking forward to learn from you, your videos. Thanks to be who you are :) sheers !!
Thank you so much for a great tribute!! It’s really something to see how many lives Neil touched professionally and non professional… I’m sure he’s met your father now 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
What a wonderfully positive and uplifting tribute to a friend. I am moved. That was just fantastic.⚡️
Wish Greg joined with geddy and Alex. The world needs some good music. And a tour to follow it
This was beautiful man wonderful video because of Neil and you Mr. B I picked up a pair of sticks when I was 10 years old back in 96’ my first concert ever was Rush live at the Alamodome December 2nd 1996 in San Antonio TX watching Neil play was just mind blowing I was inspired
Manic Depression sprinkled throughout. Fantastic!
Gregg, you are a special human being... You have such a gift... thank you for using it all these years. My absolute favorite concert of all time was the Skyscraper tour with DLR. I was at that Forum show late 80s and I'll never forget it. You were an absolute machine that night. And fortunately, I've been able to hang out with you a couple of times over the years and I've never met a person at your level with such a humble spirit. You sat in my car at a Stryper concert back stage at the Gibson Ampitheater in LA and listened to my entire record before it was released. That's something I'll always remember. Thank you... All the best : ) and thank you for sharing this wonderful story.... Both your work and Neil's were such an important influence on me as a young drummer.... PS I loved your solo record!!!
Lovely tribute to Neil and wonderful playing by Greg - one of the finest drummers I've ever seen.
What a tribute to the Professor! And thanks for the walk down memory lane. I, too, attended NTSU, only for a year before going in the Air Force, and spent time in those practice rooms. I don't remember the room number, but remember how much music one would hear entering the building, all hours of the day and night. What an experience that was. You made me laugh with transitioning from stumbling through a pattern being practiced until someone peeked in the window---I would go into my best Buddy impersonation! Too funny! I guess we all did that---LOL!
It really impressed me when I heard Neil was taking lessons from Freddie Gruber. It says a lot about a master when they become the student.
Now I'm hearing about Neil jamming all day with Gregg. So cool.
Hope every musician on the planet watches this. 👍👍👍
Best advice ever. I've been playing drums since 97. I have not always owned a set of drums and haven't had lessons. I LOVE drums. Everything about them. You have to play to have fun. I have fun when I play. I can't help it. It is just something my soul needs.
I saw the thumbnail and wanted to see the playing, but the conversation was just as much of a blessing. Thanks Gregg,
Man…51 and need inspiration now more than ever. Thanks for sharing your Neil story, it means a lot. Thanks also for conducting for us, really helpful! Thanks again and good luck!
It's funny how at around 2:40 you were talking about how Neil wanted to know the names of the fish and birds, and there was an audible titmouse singing in the background. You must be near a window or something. I know it was a titmouse because I'm a bird guy. It's cool that Peart was that kind of curious guy about all kinds of things.
Think I heard a little Mitch Mitchell in there.😮 Thanks for the stories and music!
Brilliant on all levels.
Had the pleasure of meeting Gregg a few times at his clinics, was able to help set his drums up, a little (only his pedals😂). He's a great guy, best attitude! Great drummer/musician, with a wide range of styles & fantastic groove. Talent with skilled training. Just awesome!!!
That was a brilliant story and solo. Thank you! 😊
Great story, advice and drumming master Bissonette. Very inspiring, as usual.
Gregg you are a gem. Thank you.
I see why Neil liked you. I should have studied you years ago. Your love of drumming makes the drum gods smile...and me too.
Fantastic tribute and absolutely inspired playing! Thank you Gregg! Cheers
A living legend telling us about the legend. Thanks so much for that. Your solo was fantastic also!
Keep the great stories, positivity & great playing videos coming. Thanks for these 👌🏽🔥🥁
Yes! Love it Greg, thank you so much for sharing! Wonderful skills and stories 🙏🏼
LOVE the counting video in the lower corner. Thank you.
Ooooh, Mr. Bissonnette, you have NO IDEA how many times I jammed with you in my teens! You're playing on several of my favourite records ever ... but most of all, I spent lots of hours of my youth jamming on "Eat 'em and Smile" and "the Extremist". Thinking back how many times I jammed on "Shy Boy", who knew 30 years ago, that one day I'd have a chance to thank you
Great stories! Thanks for sharing these! I too appreciate the counting with your playing
I love hearing about your experiences and drumming sessions in these clips. Great channel, even for us guitar players!
Pure Awesomeness!!!
Your memories are a great tribute to your friend and a true Giant.
Thanks for sharing, teaching, and encouraging us 👍
Yeah, Buddy! So sweet! And great stories about Neil! Love it!
Love that Peart story. He seemed like a genuine good soul throughout it all. And, that was a VERY tasty 3 jam there Mr Bissonette. Love it!
WOW! Incredible drumming (as usual.) So cool you got to hang & be close to Neil. He is dearly missed.
I really enjoyed this and all your stories. Wish I could have been a fly on the wall with you and Neil jammin’ and sharing laughs.
Fantastic!!
That was gold, the stories of Neil, the advice, the 3 time, all gold. Thanks Gregg, subscribed.
Greg I love listening to you play and talk about drums and the musicians you have played with. You truly are inspirational. Thank you.

Man, this is such a great and uplifting video. Love you man!
Absolutely Fantastic Gregg ... ALL of it.
The stories, the encouragement, your playing and sharing Neil with all of us. 🎵
Great video, Gregg. Your set sounds fantastic and your chops are beautiful. Thank you for sharing your days with Niel and for keeping his memory alive, not that we need much for that, but in a different light.
GOD BLESS YOU, GREGG.
PEACE AND LOVE.
ROCK ON AND ON.
Gregg, that was a sweet tribute to Neil. And you’re at the top of your game on the drums!

So inspirational !
I’ve been in a stagnant rut.
Lost motivation and inspiration.
This is so helpful on so many levels ❤
Wonderful playing, lovely tribute. Warm hearted guy. Bravo
That was so awesome. Amazing tribute
Great video Gregg. I love hearing stories about Neil. Like many drummers who grew up in the 70s and 80s Neil was one of my favorite drummers who inspired me greatly in my playing. He was so down to earth and I love his approach to drumming. LOve your kit BTW, it is a beautiful color and sounds great.
Oh man. Just came across your channel.
I am a big fan of your playing and general personal vibe.
I'm hearing those Lum Lum licks! Hope you're well Gregg, what a great video and tribute to Neil.
Simply amazing, you’re the best!
really loved this
Great player! Great human!
Thanks so much for this!! I've discovered as I've gotten older how important and pure it is to simply play with other human beings. Great stories about Neil, too! Subscribed!
Beautiful video on many levels. Thank you sir. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for this, Greg.
Beautiful tribute and playing
