Hey everyone! I know this video is about a year old now but everything in this video still applies to ultimate meta. This is the best "how to play Lucario" video on youtube. If you have any other questions you can @ me on twitter or join my discord. I also have a lot more lucario videos that go into more specific details. You can watch them here ruclips.net/p/PLullUHhbbeBlQDhfWS2sLcM-tM5lvl4G_
I REALLY like how you go basic intermediate and advanced on your tutorials, and lucario has been my guy since brawl so I'm going to make this video my bible
Your explanation of wavebouncing is incorrect. It's not a "b-reverse b-reverse". It's closer to a turnaround b-reverse. To perform a wavebounce neutral special, you must tap back (relative to your initial facing direction), return the stick to neutral, press special, then press forward. The first tap back must be done no more than 10 frames before pressing special. This is what causes the turnaround. Forward must be held on or before the 4th frame after pressing special. Note that both of those numbers are for Smash 4, and I haven't re-tested it, but I'm pretty sure it's unchanged. What you were likely doing is holding back too long, and pressing special before releasing the stick. This results in a turnaround side-special. When you hold forward, you b-reverse the side-special. The end result is a wavebounce side-special.
The developers probably didn’t intend turnaround specials and b-reverses to be done together but they kept it because it was a somewhat competitively useful tech

I don't really plan on maining Furry Aura man, but I feel like giving the pup a try. I rarely see Lucario players in my region, so maybe I can have him as a pocket character.
Man this has really helped me improve my lucario game. I’m told I’m already pretty good but I saw this and thought, “I’ve got a lot to learn.” Also has anyone else noticed the lack of lucario mains in the smash community?
He's a very high skill based and takes alot of extra practice this why grind out lucario when you can pick up the s teirs ( this is the logic) I'm a lucario main
I feel like nobody really wants to play lucario because in order for him to be very effective he has to be at a very high percentage and any mistake could cost you the stock
Tbh, I’m just happy that there are other lucario mains out there because he isn’t used much. I’m a lucario main, and almost everyone I know that played super smash plays as some one else, and I’m actually the only lucario main in my school, so, yeah.
pretty good guide, i recently picked up a lucario as someone to play because i like to try out other character and i do think the aura mechanic is pretty good because it allows you to potentially turn a losing stock streak into a winning streak. pretty much the equivalent to one punch man when the aura is maxed
Thank you so much for this, they are not that many Lucario mains and especially Lucario guides, this for sure will help me improve! Hope one day I'll become a better Lucario and develop strategies on my own and share it for everyone. Keep the good work ^^
I like the basic Lucario guide. Though I feel that you should do a basic good or bad matchup explanation on what he is good against. Like is he good against projectile characters when you were mentioning Stage advantage. I mean other than that it’s solid! I didn’t know you can combo Aura Sphere into Force Palm. I’ve always had a interest in learning Lucario sense Brawl. Very glad he got the changes he needed!
Good Stuff! The list of simple combos/setups with examples will be a welcome sight for those getting into Lucario. The ledgetrap intro is also great: having the shot available and able to cancel into so many things is extremely nerve-wracking on the opponent. I can think of a few other handy and possibly unique tools at Lucario's disposal, especially how Double Team counter can be exceptionally helpful to get out of pressure/disadvantage. I hope I'm not being too forward or nitpicky with this, but I feel obligated to explain a fairly significant discrepancy about Aura. I looked over Meshima's tweet about Aura mechanics and multipliers. As someone who's spent a *lot* of time working with/labbing Lucario in Ultmate (and slowly compiling a comprehensive guide), I can pretty definitely say that Meshima's analysis is, at best, incomplete. Aura actually *does* take into account up to two stocks both ahead and behind, but with some caveats and strings attached. I go into great and comprehensive detail on how Aura functions in this guide posted here: smashboards.com/threads/aura-dojo-the-ultimate-players-guide-to-lucario-w-i-p.466160/ Also, with your permission, I'd like to link/embed this video in the guide itself for helpful future reference.
I love and hate how Lucario's strength is also his weakness. Your specials feel useless without percentage but when you have percentage the abilites are nearly 2HKOs but your just so easy to launch. Is he high risk high reward?
I may be kind of late, but... if you refuse to learn about lilDan's tech section (B-Reversing mainly), and you want to progress as a serious competitive player, you might as well drop Lucario.
I find it interesting, as a Fox main since Smash Bros, with Lucarios speed changes, I feel right at home. Still trying to understand the UP+B, so if a guide to that can be made, I would greatly apreciate it.
Basically all you need to know about Lucario's Up B is that it goes further the more aura you have, you can change direction in midair, and if you hit the ground with it, you can damage opponents. Think of it like Diddy Kong's Up+B but much better.
Using it offensively to cover your recovery, you can point the control stick in any direction to alter the opponent's launch trajectory. Keep in mind though that even slight changes in the angle can also greatly affect your landing lag, because even at its shortest, the endlag is fairly punishable if the hitbox is avoided
I've been trying to play a ton of Lucario and genuinely my only issue with him is Up-B. Whenever I recover it seems like Lucario has a mind of his own and starts doing autistic semi-cricles and I end up with either more endlag or a straight up SD. It's so frustrating losing a stock with aura because of something like that.
You usually fly farther when the more damage and you guide lucario right before lucario uses extreme speed with your joystick so just keep in mind where your point your joy stick
Now THAT'S what I call a useful guide! Although I'm a Wolf main since basically day 0 of Ultimate, Lucario recently caught my attention. A very fun character that I might invest more time into.
Thanks so much for this vid, immediately after I watched it and applied the techniques I became much better even beating people much higher then my level and insane aura clutches
Thanks for the help, I’m working on a smash video called the Brawlers as a montage, it won’t contain every new brawl fighter but it will contain most of them. So this was very helpful.
Good stuff, been playing Lucario since Brawl, and I learned a couple new things. I think it's worth mentioning that Aura Sphere canceling was harder in 4 since you had to shield-cancel into a jump-canceled up-smash (which was pretty much the only thing to do with a foe caught in the charge-up) , and now we can just cancel the shield straight into up-smash (or Force Palm grab, or any of the other new options) without hitting jump in between. Ultimate makes that tech so much more accessible. At the same time, the charge-up hit box got a bit of a nerf, since a lot of times you could just cover most ledge options by being backed up against the ledge charging up the sphere. It now doesn't go below the stage even at max aura. Also, characters with low-hanging hitboxes off the ledge might not get hit with a sphere - the FE characters in general hang really low off the ledge.
I love it. So many people spit on Lucario and heavily underestimate him. He's like another Little Mac in the eyes of the smash community: *They call him trash, yet they're afraid to play against him.* I'm happy to see people still use him.
If you can't Wavebounce (I can't either), you can instead do an empty RAR jump towards your opponent and then tap B and the immediatley left-stick forwards (i.e. a B-reverse). This will cause your character move diagonally back and downwards while charging Aura Sphere in what is essentially a pseudo-wavebounce. Question to anyone - in order to move quickly out of charging (and hitting) with your aura sphere while grounded, do you just tap shield, and then use your attack (like side B for example). I've seen videos where it doesn't look like I see any frames where the shield comes up. I know you can jump out of charging as well. Just seeing if there's something I'm not aware of.
Yeah charge storage cancel (CSC) by tapping shield, just like short hopping with jump button, and shield doesn't come up. Lots faster than shielding to cancel
I feel like you should have covered lucario’s down B in this video. I understand that it’s not incredibly useful or widely used but I feel like it’s very necessary to know in case of certain matchups/maps. Also I struggled to hear your voice in parts of the video, I’d recommend decreasing the music volume a little bit.
How'd he be a mix of those 2? I can't see the characteristics from either of them. If anything, Leaf Blade would kinda function like Greninja's smash attacks, but other than that...

Nice video. I appreciate it. What tier do you think lucario is in? I don't see many playing with him. I'm still undecided on a main. I typically play king Diddy and dark Samus. I like their play style because I suck at combos. I would say that I'm a beginner but improving. Palintina is co but I think yoshi has character ya know?
Been practicing and playing lucario for almost a week now, still have yet to land a short hop nair in a match, can do it without a problem in training but it’s small hit range is almost impossible to land when you’re playing against another human player

Lucario will be top tier if not then high mid
Imo lucario is a top tier. Probably on the lower end (around top 20 I would say but hard to tell)
Lol you need diddy combos to play diddy
Zero probably has the most accurate tier list rn
Been practicing and playing lucario for almost a week now, still have yet to land a short hop nair in a match, can do it without a problem in training but it’s small hit range is almost impossible to land when you’re playing against another human player
