Chris I know this is your podcast but 2 things Sam Harris said in this conversation crystalized 2 thoughts for me. One is I've been trying to come up with a daily affirmation that is not corny and that is really me and when he uttered the phrase "Greek level tragedy" I knew that was it. So the affirmation I came up with around that was "Michael, You Are Loved and Forgiven Despite Your Greek Level Tragedies." But more importantly I have been searching my entire 56 years for a personal mission statement if you will, and the metaphor of trying to maintain straight path despite crosswinds spoke to my aviation heart. And so thanks to you and obviously Sam Harris, but you because if I hadn't found your podcast I wouldn't have found this conversation I have come up with this as my personal life statement:
The True Heading I am attempting to track despite heaving social Crosswinds and sudden internal Downdrafts is to live an unashamed, authentic life before mankind and an inner life of tranquil contentment.
Thank you for your podcast and thank you Sam Harris for two pieces of earth shattering inspiration in one talk. Astounding.

I‘m reading Kant right now (at least trying to) and it is quite soothing knowing that other people questioned how we can know absolutely anything to be true in this world at all. I had Descartes‘ mental break down last semester and it kept me up for a couple of nights. Descartes invokes God though, Kant does not.

Chris, longtime listener and longer time general podcast listener. You’re changing the game, man. The quality of your interviewing and interviewees is superb, the quality of cinematography, the care for aesthetic and artistic beauty and appreciation for the way in which your already good work is and can such be elevated; it is all easy to appreciate. I’m excited to see where the show is heading if this recent excellence in content is only a step in its evolution. It’s inspired me to wonder how I can elevate myself and the work I output beyond the norm. Looking forward to Jordan 2.0, hope you manage to capture him in such atmosphere and in as many pixels. Thanks for being an antidote to the chaos of modern life and for taking the more difficult road of creating genuinely meaningful and high-brow long form content in a world ruled by cheap short-form thrills.

When I did remember, my mind seized with glee on my former irritant, and I witnessed my mind's proclivity. Now I recognize infatuation with my narratives and I can head it off at the pass.

When you are speaking at the table with those that hold opinions different than yours, the conversation is interesting and rounded. Much of the conversation in this interview, is you saying openly that you are withdrawn from the table, no longer capable of handling a challenging discourse. The concern is that you are embracing a form of censorship. Yes, but logically it is obvious. This was what I first thought made most sense by far. And the fact the right hopped on it let’s say for the right reasons.. it quickly got politicized, and to the point to where my dad (crazy extreme right) and mom (very left) we’re both on their “it’s gotta be this cus that’s what my base is saying…” respectively. And I pointed out eventually when it became a “conspiracy theory” that it was much more likely that it was a lab leak, but I doubt it was intentional. Covering it up and all the spin on both sides? Of course that’s manufactured and created. This is really the perfect example of something being politicized to the extreme. To where my mom thought I was turning right from my one opinion. Totally insane. I bet our gov knows with near certainty what happened if they investigated it with spies etc. I think leaders in chine know precisely what happened and most likely covered it up for months. A real “let’s f around and find out”moment. Total selfishness. To the expense of millions. Trump did the same. It drives me insane how I agree with Sam about needing institutional trust until he says something like "we can't have 90% of the population calling bullshit on authority", instead of saying something like "we need more humility and consistency coming from the institutions as to not lose the trust of some and turn others into mindless mouthpieces for authority." My point is that putting the burden on the public to extend a disingenuous trust to the institutions at this point instead of putting that burden on institutions to regain public trust is pretty fucked up. I've heard him frame it this way over and over, and I've never heard anyone push back on it...

One of the biggest reasons I admire Sam, aside from the positive changes to my mental health he’s helped me to embrace through his meditation and mindfulness insights, is the fact that he seems to be genuinely trying his hardest to make honest sense of everything that’s happening in our society and not allow himself to be trapped by this tribalistic, fingers-in-ears way of thinking and behaving that’s pervading our society.
He points out faults on the “left” and the “right”, and acknowledges the dangers of letting yourself get too wrapped up in your own confirmation bias, self-assurance and total dismay of those who believe differently to you.
There’s so many influencers and internet figures now who just commercialise throwing out content to their captured audience inside this huge echo chamber. Very few people want to even consider for a second the other side’s perspective and these populist influencers just give each of their audiences more of what they want to keep the wheels of polarisation going - there’s nothing mentally stimulating or healthy in that and Sam calls it out.
It’s a shame there’s not more like him who can simply try and read between the lines on both ends of the increasingly divided, polarised spectrum. Sam, for the sake of all that is sensical in the world, please don’t stop what you’re doing!

@@PreppinShootinLivin I have heard that some his former followers suddenly decided he’s lost his mind because of his well-known dislike of a certain political figure. Although firstly as always people who react strongly to things he said will relish in taking things out of context and fall victim to the Horns Bias, and secondly and most importantly for me from what I’ve heard from Sam, he attacks the absurdity of much of the left’s wokeness, for example, just as much as he displays his disdain of certain ideas on the right. He tries to make sense of how there’s more and more lying, narcissistic, populist figures all over the place and is willing to at least have conversations with those he doesn’t agree with and not pissing matches.
I personally find this a refreshing far cry from the influencer echo chambers that exist everywhere nowadays.

Nah, he went fascist. By that I mean he holds authoritarian values, as opposed to anti authoritarian values.
All brainwashing does is rewire a persons moral framework away from their traditional culture. Using authoritarian tactics outlined in Robert Lifton's 8, for instance.
The moral framework of the US, is deeply rooted in basic human rights, which is synonymous with God given rights, whichever venacular we prefer. Both are referring to the old school ideas of John Locke, and championed by JS Mill.
Those ideas are the most anti authoritarian ideas I know of, and the moral framework Sam's country, and my country were founded on.
He rejects them. He can cry "but I'm a centrist" all he wants... he's a fascist af, extreme authoritarian... with a monotone voice. That all there is too him.
Oh no, some Christians are "scare into their belief, at the threat of hell fire!" So was Sam, easily scared into fascism, at the threat/propaganda of the state.
Even Hitchens strongly held to basic human rights. People either forget, or never knew Hitchens was pro life. Just an example, one can be an atheist, and without going authoritarian. Yes, what's aborted is a human life, I give Sam respect for acknowledging that at least. But that and more shows he rejects basic human rights, in favor of authoritarianism.
What am I to say? It's great that Sam is a 'centrist' authoritarian? No thanks, it's ok to be an anti authoritarian, even if Sam thinks it's "tribal"... Because, guess what, it is.
In the end, both Hitchens and Christians, whether basic human rights or God given rights, they are the masses holding to a moral authority that supercedes the state. Hopefully giving the middle finger to authoritarianism from the state. That's tribal, and it upholds what basic human rights we have left.
      Sam is spineless, and pathetic.

Also, Sam is MAINLY trying to discredit both Tucker Carlson and Andrew Tate in his way of describing them, while also being completely unable to recognize any valid criticism of himself that was a part of the Twitter shitstorm that made him leave the platform. I remember Lex trying to ask him about his Trump derangement syndrome, but he turns everything outwards and is fully and totally avoiding any form of steelmanning for the arguments against him. If he could just turn back and get some “belief system” humility than he could become a great voice of wisdom. Unfortunately he believes any oppinions he’s stated are based on facts and when those facts become wrong he can’t go back and evaluate them properly - because those oppinions have become his own identity and his religion. - inevitably he’d prefer to censor the opposition to his stated beliefs than go through the relavatory process of evaluating his own “religion” aka… his own beliefs
