It’s disgusting more people don’t give Lara the respect she deserves. Mike is righting years of injustice with this one. Love the girl who has like 3 sets of dead bio parents
As a Cambodian, I can confirm that us being featured/referenced in Tomb Raider still remain our biggest contribution to the world. It’s still being talked about by the authority in Siem Reap where the temple was filmed/depicted at.
can confirm. i visited family in cambodia and when i stopped at ang kor the thing that was advertised the most was definitely the tomb raider relations lol. stunning place beyond that though, never seen anything like it
As a gamer in their early 30s, I grew up worshipping Lara Croft. I used to "train" at the lake holding my breath as long as she had to in the old games as a child and dressed as her for Halloween way too many years. This is the crossover I needed to make my entire year. So excited to enjoy this! ❤🙏
Yeah Lara was pretty big in my household growing up too! I only ever played the Lara's Home levels and I have all of the tutorial lines burned into my memory to the point where if I get frustrated and say "No, that's not right" to myself, I'll end up telling myself I "need to press forward and jump at the same time; run back to the start and try again" to calm myself down a little.
A Tomb Raider game was the first video game I ever owned (after I pestered my dad for it), and after that I fell in love with games. A decade and a half later, I'm wrapping up studies in game art (design). One could say, mother Lara quite literally chose the trajectory of my life. 😭
angelina jolie as lana croft was one of the most iconic and memorable (imo THEE top) of the core LESBIAN AWAKENING characters of the 2000s nd im gagggeedd mike is talking abt it !!!
MEEEE FR as a metal head lesbian, when i realised Korn had a song on the tomb raider: cradle of life film I LOST IT ( also please please check out the song if ya want to "Did my time" is my absolute fav and Angelina Jolie absolutely DESTROYED the mv
The way I was OBSESSED with this woman when I was in elementary school. Loved the movies, loved the games, wanted to do... theft of artifacts of great cultural importance I guess? It was the 00s so I was several centuries late on that I fear
another point on archaeology vs tomb raiding: if you are going in focusing on artifacts only you are tomb raiding. archaeology is as much about the soil as it is about the stuff you find in it, as the layers of the material can tell you a lot about time and potential different periods of activity. by blasting through it looking for flashy artifacts all of that important information is permanently lost! you can only excavate something once before the integrity of the soil and deposit is ruined. unfathomable information has been lost because artifacts are presented outside of their context when raided for profit.
OMG! I watched that movie TWICE in the cinema when it came out back in 2001! I was 11. Went for a third time but they kicked me out because I was the only one that bought a ticket and it wasn't worth playing the movie for just one kid. 😭I was so obsessed with Angelina. It's still the best Tomb Raider movie. So camp, so stylish, so adventurous and just fun. It's that "Charlie’s Angels Full Throttle" energy...
When I was little, I would sit on my Grampa's lap and watch him play Tomb Raider. She was everything, and a big part of that was because of how I got to experience her. My grampa died recently and I'm over 30. Those are still some of my favorite childhood memories.
One of my childhood core memories is sitting at my friend Christens computer as she tried to get past the scarab level where they were all coming for you and being the strategist I am told her to jump up and use the monkey bars to escape them and get out of the room and it worked! She got past that part finally. Loving that you posted this and love you so much!! 💚💚
Why isn't this 5 hours long so I can watch it while I work overnight and be entertained Also to add: Lara Croft: tomb raider is how my parents clocked me as a lady fruit when I was like 8/9 years old.
I used to imagine that Lara Croft had so many different origin stories because she was a storyteller at heart and always wanted to amp up the stakes when someone asked.
Mike does a great CEO voice, I can really imagine him waffling about how much it hurt to sack half of the employees after his companys hit video game Lara Croft vs Charlie's Angles only sold 15 billion copies
my name is Lara and the amount of people who ask me if I’m named after Lara Croft is frightening 💀 (born in 2002, doesn’t help) but maybe I should accept that I can slay by association
the HISTORY i have with Angelina's Lara Croft. I randomly came across the sequel on tv wayyyy back when and it was as poor quality as cable tv got back then and i thought she was SOOO BADASS. i figured out how to use Google and found out this is a gameeee. As a little girl in India, i didnt have access to a lot besides a hand me down PC from relatives and my aunt's family who travelled abroad every year and visited during summers would ask me if i wanted anything. i didnt even know the scope of things that are available across the world but i asked for this game called Tomb Raider. Sadly, the only thing that came out of it was a children's learning interactive video game called Clue Finders but the next year i DID manage to score a DVD of Lara Croft’s video game and MAN did i play the shit out of it, I think thats why i got glasses at the age of 10 😭😭😭 I still wish i had it JUST for the nostalgia (even though none of us have a CD drive laptop anymore). If anybody knows how to play this online for free PLEASE let me know PS Mike i hope you know you still have an audience the same age as you 😩
I appreciate you doing your research and analyzing the character with a little more respect. Most people just say haha 90's boobs, but including Gard's philosophy on caricaturization is something not a lot of people bother to talk about. Lara was originally envisioned as a cartoony character who explores Atlantis and does flips while dual wielding machine guns, and her appearance was meant to be equally silly and unreal.
I’ll have to find the documentary, Tobey did say he exaggerated her portions more as at the time it would be harder to tell if she was a woman And in the 90’s before tomb Raider the video game industry wasnt to nice to female lead games, Metroid was a failure and the industry in no way believed a woman could sell a video game (that is in the g4 tomb raider documentary from 2003) so they took a risk with tomb raider
Put it in perspective by the exact date (the 2 weeks from tomb raider 2 sales from g4 documentary, November 5, 1997) Tomb Raider outsold the entire Metroid franchise by 1997 with only TWO games. Metroid had 3 games out if I’m not mistaken Now Metroid at 17 (23 million units sold) Vs Tomb Raider 23 games (95 million units sold, could’ve passed 100 by now as that number is outdated)
