    my parents recently got divorced and for a while my dad was having a hard time dealing with all of it and, as a result, was having a really hard time sleeping. one of his attempts to deal with this problem was buying this weird bracelet device that supposedly admitted some type of frequency that "helped with insomnia." and seeing that package and listening to him optimistically describe what it was made me so, so profoundly sad. he's not a very gullible dude, he was an engineer and a math teacher, he's pretty logically-minded but he just really, really wanted some peaceful, relieving sleep. these companies are blatantly predatory and their targets are people who are just desperately searching for relief. it's incredibly cruel and I hope with my entire heart that some of the people who buys these things in the hopes of feeling less bad, at the very least, experience some kind of placebo effect.

Like sure, a product that turns all liquids into slushes in pretty dumb and useless. But the worst that can do is lose someone $25, not that big of a deal at the end of the day. I think lots of people who have never experienced them think it's "just" a panic attack, but when you actually have one you can genuinely think you're dying. Like, crushing chest pain, sense of doom, can't catch your breath, trying not to vomit cos you think you'll choke on it, scared to stand up in case you pass out. You genuinely think you're having a heart attack & dying and can't stop it, and it is entirely sensible to go to the hospital to get checked out.

    • @mikete01
      @mikete01 7 месяцев назад +20

      Hey, as someome dealing with Crazy panic attacks for the past 8 years wich got me into the Doctors office probably a 100 times, let me Tell you Your heart was having an arrhythmia, yes panic attacks usually gives an elevated heart rate, like 100-120 pbm. It's not dangerous, our heart is Fine. When I discovered that my anxiety could affect my body I thought I was Crazy. We're not Crazy, we're Just sick and our Brian (wich is one of the most important organs in our body) had a dysfunction, usually in producing essencial hormanes like adreline - that's a thing in General anxiety - and that's why our brains acts like wacthing a movie is like being hunted by a serial killer, I Felt pretty justified in going to the hospital after that. So Your mind wasn't pranking you, it was only reacting like a serial killer was chasing you (yes our brain cannot Tell that a movie and a serial killer are not the same, that's why It's sick), wich for the rest of Your body wasn't true (because you could SEE It was not, so Your legs understood that they didn't need to run, Your brain didn't). So you're not running and body isn't spending the energy like it's supposed to, Your bodies need to deal with the adreline that Your Brain is producing and he does that by elevating Your oxygen consumption and Your mussel and other organs such as Your heart start racing like Crazy because you are producing hormones and body is getting rid of It. So basically, medication for anxiety stops our Brain for producing Crazy levels of adreline, and medidation helps our Brain Focus so he understands that wacthing a movie and a serial killer are not the same thing. Exercinsing helps you get Rid of the extra adreline by using extra energy and a good food and nutrition intake makes Your Body have good substance so he can produce only the necessary amounts, bc yes foods like junk food usually makes our Brain produce and have nutrients that the only thing they do is produce extra adreline. A good night of sleep regulate the levels of production and resets it, so It helps balance out. So when you go to hospital feeling like you're not breathing you're brain is acting like it's a running a Marathon and heart is following with It. So you need medication or some kind of breathing techinique, like swimmers so you're breathing the necessary amounts in that moment. Every time you go to an ER and they tell your mind is acting up, remember that yes it's true, but is acting UP in your Body, so maybe you're throwing up, maybe your heart is super fast, and sometimes you need medication to control that. Find some way you can stabilize yourself, I learned a swimmers technique and that's helped a Lot. So don't be ashamed to seek help, after all with your organ (brain) is not producing or behaving in the way they should, so it's necessary to search for help. I only understood that when I learned that no my brain isn't acting up or faking It, it's simples cannot produce like It should. It helped me think I'm less Crazy and should Go to the ER when needed, bc If someone has a diseases, and is feeling sick, they need help. It also allowed my brain to identify alarming signals and learn what is ER urgency and what to Just make a Cup of tea and watch dumb videos. Hope It helps like helped when my doctor finally explained I was not creating a disease. It is actuallty malfunctioning.
      Sorry english is not my First language.

    When I was a kid especially I couldn’t feel the difference between being really hungry, having a stomach bug, or bad anxiety.
    I can’t imagine any of these product helping with that though.

      @petraelliott5930 5 месяцев назад +9

      @@vinxx3I believe you’re referring to “introspection,” which is similar but not quite the same!
      Interoception is one of our senses. It’s the body’s ability to tell physical needs - ie, feeling hunger, need to use the bathroom, even temperature. People with sensory processing issues can struggle with interoception - for example, many autistic people struggle to feel when their body is overheating or getting too cold.
      Introspection, on the other hand, is something anyone can do. Its the process of soul-searching, looking within, etc- it’s a cerebral process of self reflection and looking within.
      So one is the ability to feel your body’s status, and the other is the process of thinking about yourself. Sorry this was very pedantic and unnecessary, I just thought that the similarity between these two words was interesting!

    - electric toothbrush, for those days you have no energy to brush your teeth. You can keep it beside your bed with a cup of water for the days you cannot get out of bed.
    - dry shampoo, whatever scent you like ^^ same principle as above. As weird as it sounds, baby shampoo is great if you go along time without washing your hair bc showers feel like a huge task. Baby shampoo is clarifying and it’s usually not scented and expensive - and it’s real cheap too!
    - a tens machine or massager. Sometimes emotions can get embedded in your muscles and cause tension. Sometimes, being able to have a massage can force your body out of anxiety mode and help you feel better.
    - non minty toothpaste for my sensory troubled friends. Sometimes mint can be overpowering and make even the most basic of self care feel like a gargantuan task. I got myself a strawberry flavoured one 🍓
    - a weighted blanket, esp for those with insomnia. They can be a bit pricey and washing them is a pain in the ass, but you can find some smaller cheap ones that can help you get out of anxiety mode and relax.
    - a journal or diary, paper or just the notes app on your phone. It’s good to get thoughts out of your head and on paper sometimes, it helps to process things like that.
    - a gigantic jug of water, or a crate of bottled water. Just have it beside your bed. Sometimes it feels like hell to just move your arm over, so make it easy on yourself
    Take care of yourselves out there!

    As someone currently going through the process of getting diagnosed with ADHD at 26 (who also has anxiety/depression), I really hate these scam products that claim to "increase focus". They're very clearly trying to prey on the recent increase in ADHD/mental health awareness on social media, and it feels REALLY scummy to target a group of people who tend to have issues with stuff like impulse purchasing (and also forgetting to return items within a return window). I haven't been getting too many physical products suggested to me, but I've been seeing a lot of ads for subscription apps "to help ADHD", and from what I can tell they are basically ALL garbage.

Some days that's washing & drying a single load of laundry, others it's just taking a shower. Once I get a little thing done it's enough to get me to feel that bit better and get the ball rolling to feeling lots better. *God is ONE manifesting himself as THREE;* the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Bless him! *For these three are one.*
      As I am led by the Holy Spirit, nothing I state is a lie, but the truth of God. Anyone who tells you differently is misinformed or a liar. They do not know God, nor led by him.
      Anyone who *claims* to be a Christian and is against what I am doing, and where I am doing it; the Holy Spirit does not dwell within them, they lack understanding. Interoception is something I'm very familiar with, as I'm autistic. Interoception, at it's most basic explanation, is your mind's ability to interpret body signals - for example, the ability to tell that you are tired or that you need to use the bathroom. Sometimes those signals can be misinterpreted by your brain, like hungry signals making your brain think you're really cold. They can also be entirely absent, like having no warning that the water you're using to wash dishes is WAY too hot and you're going to end up burning your hands before long. When these signals are misinterpreted by your brain or are missing altogether, you have poor Interoception. This is a very common problem for disabled individuals, especially those with mental disabilities, but it is not exclusive to disabled people - anyone can have poor interoception for a variety of reasons. Usually societal pressure or large enough problems force people with poor interoception to make adjustments to their daily routine to account for them, like using a digital thermometer to test the temperature of your shower water, or having scheduled bathroom breaks. There are no current proven, scientifically tested methods to 'fix' this problem for all or even most people - it's mostly helped by routines, adjustments, and simply being cognizant of the issues you personally struggle with.

      I was going to reply that knowing if you need the toilet isn't done with interoception, it's done with a combination of remembering how long it's been since you last went, and pushing on your bladder to see if it's full. Then I realised that perhaps that isn't something all people do, and I only do it because I have poor interoception.

    • @alexandrarifenburg8135

      @Liam Lamb Right on the money! I have a literal schedule for myself, as I have poor interoception. I don't notice if I miss one of the scheduled trips to the bathroom unless I'm in extreme pain and seconds away from having an accident. I tried to explain that to a friend who has Crohn's, and he was extremely confused at the idea that I made a schedule and generally don't go to the restroom outside of my scheduled times. For him, going to the restroom *can't* be scheduled and trying to do so would result in accidents and pain and embarrassment. He has to ask to be seated near the restroom at restaurants, map out the restrooms whenever he goes to an event at an unfamiliar location, etc. Most neurotypical, able-bodied people don't have to come up with tricks or schedules or make sure their offices are near the restroom at work or anything like that, but if it's your norm and no one has pointed out that it's outside the norm before, it makes sense that you haven't thought about it until now. Hopefully having a word and knowing how it might manifest helps make things easier for you - it definitely helped me a TON.

I think companies have realized how many ppl struggle with mental health, and they’ve decided to grossly capitalize off it, knowing that ppl are desperate to try and preserve their mental health as it is. It’s that constant reiteration of “maybe THIS stupid thing will fix my life!”. As someone who’s had chronic mental illnesses for years, you soon realize that no amount of quick-fix products will help, you just have to continue fighting with yourself in an effort to preserve yourself.

    31:11 so fun fact about taping it to yourself: the more often you use a medical tape (including bandages) the more likely you are to develop an allergy to the adhesive. True story. My partner is allergic to almost every medical adhesive at this point as well as a latex allergy. She was out on pain medication patches (only thing insurance agreed to cover) and when she went to remove and replace it, her entire top layer of skin came off with it.
      It took over 3 months of repeated doctors visits to finally get the insurance to agree to cover anything else, while she also had to go into withdrawals from the pain medication, objectively leaving her far worse off. Gotta love the American healthcare system.
