For anyone wondering, this was originally a Memco store, opened in 1970 (part of the larger Gemco chain). Then that closed in early 1983, became a Bradlees that same year, and then became Kmart in 1989. Sadly, it's about to become nothing again :(. Hopefully, they'll be able to preserve this really unique looking building and just have another new retailer move in.
This location started out in 1970s as a Memco store and when it went out of business it became Bradlees and when it closed in the 1980s it then became Kmart. This Kmart going out of business as of now. I wonder what will take its place
@william jackson My father told me that K-Mart actually used to be inside the Langley Park Plaza from September, 1981 up until November, 1996 when it closed and Toys R' Us opened in its spot. He said that Toys R' Us actually used to be in Lewisdale, MD but was much smaller in size and moved to K-Mart's former spot inside Langley Park Plaza in November, 1996, to significantly expand/modernize its store. The Value Village Store took over Toys R' Us' original small/compact Lewisdale, MD Store. I was born in April, 1999, three years after this took place so all I have is my dad's story. However; I did see that the Langley Park Toys R' Us Store did end up eventually closing on January 31, 2007. Its spot inside the Langley Park Plaza simply remained vacant/unoccupied for more than two years until July, 2009 when the Regency Furniture Store opened.
@william jackson I also read an article that the Giant Food Store at the intersection of Riggs Road (MD 212) & Eastern Avenue NE only opened in July, 1997/basically replaced the older, much smaller Giant Food Store on Riggs Road NE inside the Riggs Park neighborhood of Northeast Washington D.C. (within very close proximity to the Fort Totten Metro Station). @williamjackson My dad also said there used to be a Giant Food Store inside the Langley Park Plaza in Langley Park, MD that got replaced by the Atlantic Supermarket Latino Grocery Store. I wonder whether that particular Giant Food Store closed in 1997, or 1998? Giant Food's 1998 Annual Report shows it closed during the 1998 Fiscal Year; however; the 1998 Fiscal Year basically starts on March 1, 1997 and ended on February 28, 1998, so I am not sure if it closed in 1997 right after the Giant on Eastern Avenue NE opened, or in early 1998 right before the end of the 1998 fiscal year? I know the Royal Ahold Buyout was about to take place during that time and that Giant was closing its older, more compact stores.
@william jackson My dad used to take me to this K-Mart Store at the intersection of Riggs Road (MD 212) & Sargent Road (MD 211) in Chillum, MD between the years of 2002 & 2004 when I attended preschool at both Greenwood & Francis Fuchs, since PG Plaza had no Target, or really very very stores at the time. The abandoned GC Murphy Site was vacant and all of WMATA Metrobus Routes serving the PG Plaza Metro Station, used to directly enter inside PG Plaza and serve a Metrobus stop in front of the abandoned site until it was demolished in May, 2003 to make room for the construction of the brand new Target Store which opened in October, 2004.
Wow...they even have a pay phone! This Kmart looks a lot like the one that was in Rochester, PA. The top floor was a Kmart and the lower floor was a Giant Eagle. The building itself was a former department store (Kaufmann’s/Gimbel’s/Horne’s...one of them). Kmart is long gone from there, don’t know if the Giant Eagle is still open.
Smart tip: Kmart carries lots of great brands like Wrangler, Kenmore, Craftsman, Rubbermaid, Jaclyn Smith, Coleman, Hanes, LEGO, Igloo, CoverGirl, DieHard, Adam Levine Collection, Dickies, Cannon, Joe Boxer, Route 66 and so many more!! All at low, low Kmart prices. #Kmart
There was a Big Kmart Near me it opened in the 1990's and it closed on May in 2017 because Walmart took it's business that Big Kmart was nice and as of right now its still abandoned #SAVETHEKMARTS
That front arched facade on the store is sure different and liking how you’re using some electronic music while inside to cover up the in store audio to avoid copyright strikes
The prince George mall which has many juggernauts like Target and Footlocker for back to school and a staples near by as well. This kmart sadly had no chance against these guys.
To be honest I don’t know what the guys problem is! He’s not being very Christian like as he portrays with his bible verses! He better start studying his King James Bible a little more!
So many childhood memories in those walls. I remember getting my wii there

10:09 you'd wonder if the man in the black polo is loss prevention.
This store was something else before it was Kmart, but I can’t figure out which one.
Maybe an old Kroger?
