  • Hello and welcome to that british homestead.
    Today, we are planting out peppers, however things do not go as planned. I wanted to do a MASSIVE planting, however with Andy being so fussy after his jabs I was not able to plant out everything that I needed too. I am learning this year that its ok to walk in baby steps!
    I plant out lots of peppers in my no-dig bed, i have enriched the bed with horse manure in the full and it has broken down wonderfully into rich and soil.
    While taking a break with Andy, I answer some of your questions you asked on the community post from whats I would grow if i could in the UK, to if I would have a farm.
    Next I harvest 101 garlics that have been effected by rust and some white rot, something else that does not go to plan. However, we make lemons into lemonade, or fermented lemons. This garlic will still give us a butch of flavour.
    Next we make fruit roll ups1 which I manage not to record on the camera, something that also didn't go to plan! oh well, there is always next week!
    I also talk about the different preservation techniques that we are able to do here, fermenting, pressure canning, water bath canning, curing, dehydrating, pickling and how I got into preserving my own food.

    I think you're forgiven for being behind Nik! 😂 but yeah the weather... Love that aubergine! Never seen one like that before (save the seed! 😜😂). Ooo I got the first question! Great answer - thank you for being so open. Couldn't agree more that food is medicine and growing your own so important to mental wellbeing too.

    Hi, I am self taught via books and you tube on pressure canning and water bath canning(jarring). Dehydrate alot of herbs not tried fruit leather in there yet but on a low oven setting. I grow food not as much as I want to as I only have a garden now, gave up the allotment due to ill health. Most of my jarred food are classed as single ingredient foods like ugly chicken, beef when it's on offer, tomatoes, don't recommend the green beans or carrots or potato's, trial and error. Jams and apple sauce, peaches, pears etc in light syrup. Winter Squash, as its a great pumpkin substitute 😊 I also dehydrate kale and add it to many dishes for the extra nutrition and my family thinks I'm adding parsley 😅 many more things I've learned. Cowboy candy (relish) is on my todos list this year. Keep up the good work 👏 🎉

    I think you’re doing amazing, not behind.. You had a c-section in March, which definitely would have put me back longer than you. That aubergine is just amazing. Never seen that one before!
    Love the reasons why you got into gardening. Just goes to show the core memories from younger, plus wanting to contribute differently to the household really did drive the decision.
    Thanks for the mention and answering the question. Shop bought tomatoes are really the only tomatoes we’ve ever had here. So excited for all the different varieties we’re growing now.
    Loved the fruit leather making. Fascinating! Thank you for sharing that and for helping me to understand the difference between what to pressure can or water bath.
    You do so well with all the planting etc when you have Andrew with you.

      Thanks Clare! lol I honestly find the c section doesn't bother me... I'm a lot weaker than I was before I got pregnant. I used to be able to pick up 30/40kg no issue... now no.. I did my 1st core workout last night so I'll build it back up and the gardening helps so much I sometimes walk up with my whole body aching! I think having a little baby weight with me helps! The quarts are like an hole new level for me! lol
      Yh I think childhood memories affects us completely... loved feeling of being more in the countryside... my nan was more inside London than I am now but there was field
      You're very welcome, sorry that Andy was so loud in your bit lol I need to have the mic higher!
      I'm sure you'll love home grown tomatoes and be water canning them in no time

      @@ThatBritishHomestead what stunned me was you didn’t dream of a farm, just somewhere to basically have the space you have at the allotment plots at home.. although you do then say a small holding would be lovely.
      I pictured you wanting a full on British equivalent of homestead. Imagine what you could do with everything at home. You’re already really self sufficient now in certain foods

      @@TheFarmyardGarden not like a industrial farm... has no appeal to me... I think it's interesting however I'm not a monoculture person.... I also wouldn't want the pressure of meeting targets when there is a bad season. I'd be happy with a few acres, couple of animals and be as self-sufficient as I can be. I love growing food and raising animals... but not for profit
      I want to have like goats, chickens, sheep, chickens, turkeys, ducks and goose (only one) but that don't make a farm! I want a homestead... I don't know what that will look like.
      But I never say never coz life chances you so much

    New sub here from West Virginia in the US. I thought I'd share the title of a book I just finished. It's called "Holy Shit" by Gene Logsdon (framer from Ohio, now deceased). It's all about natural fertilizers. I really enjoyed it. My 14yo daughter studied Regenerative Agricultural Science in homeschool this past year and she read the book and learned a lot from it as well.
    Ca't wait to see more of your videos! God bless.

      Oh I'm so jealous I wanted to go back to school do regenerative agriculture! I found that fascinating! I'll have to give it a read I love an audiobook! You know what it's like when you are a grown up you suddenly have no time to sit and read. As a child I read so much! I was always reading
      I bet she is loving it! I like how you can pick what you want to study in homeschooling... I have to say I'm very tempted to look into homeschooling here in the UK

      We really enjoy homeschooling and I put together our own curriculum. This year we studied Appalachian History, Regenerative Ag Science, Biblical Hebrew, Appalachian Literature, Bible Study, Consumer Math, and for health studies she is earning an online certification as an herbalist (I'm an herbalist as well).
      I want to watch your precious videos and get caught up with your channel. I have been inspired and befriended by many gardeners in the UK. Some really great folks!

    Thanks for answering my question! Sorry ive only just managed to watch this video. Didn't know about the acidity thing, so now i know the difference between water bathing and pressure canning. Would love to make some mayonnaise but am nervous about raw eggs? Also very interested in the fermented food, i want to try doing that. Im actually not as nervous about that cos i figure if theres mold growing on it, then its not good to eat lol. Whereas with canned food, you cant see the bacteria?

    • @ThatBritishHomestead
      @ThatBritishHomestead  3 месяца назад +2

      so if your mayo goes off it looks like seethrough and gross, if your canned food goes off it pops the lid, and grows mold, i have had a few lids pop. It is not something you need to worry, I would say it was very hard to poison yourself. I found it so hard to eat what I canned and fermented to start odd with, however now its second nature. being British we just dont have the cultural history of canning. I have never eaten anything that made me ill, and I have been canning for years and years. AND i was taught from youtube LOL

    How do byou ferment your lemons please?

    • @ThatBritishHomestead
      @ThatBritishHomestead  4 месяца назад +2

      Cut the ends off of both sides of 5 lemons, add a tablespoon of salt at the bottom of the jar and a tea spoon of salt in each lemon that you cut in 1/4s your press them down to release the juice. Layering in my salt each time... then add the juice of one lemon. Top with salt and add a weight, the lemons should be below the brine level... if you crush them down will a wooden spoon, I use my wooden rolling pin. It produces enough liquid.. but if not add more juice has to be fresh as the bottled stuff as preservatives. Degass the jars every day by opening their lids. After the skins become soft you can use them.
      Then just use it as you would any lemon, only difference is that you use the skins!
