  • "The Lost Valley: Rising Water, Sinking Hopes" - On Aug. 28 2011 Hurricane Irene dumped record amounts of rainfall on the borough of Manville. Manville has a history flooding and Ken and Letty Burlew have rebuilt their house three times in a span of seven years living in the Lost Valley section of town. With upwards of seven feet of water on the first floor of some homes, residents have to rebuild and wait. They wait on FEMA money, they wait on news about a government buyout, and they wait on the next major storm that could put them under water again. (A film by Andre Malok, editing by Bumper DeJesus and Seth Siditsky)

I have lived here for 42 years. The people of Manville are resilient but can only take so much. It only takes a ride through the Lost Valley section of town to see all of the empty lots from Irene and later hurricane Sandy. It brings a tear to my eye knowing that many of those empty lots were friends of mine.

I grew up in Somerville NJ and remember Doria in 71, my family still lives in Manville, Bound Brook, Millstone and Hillsborough. I moved away about 30 years ago but memories of flooded basements, homes, streets and businesses are very vivid and the fear of coming storms is still with me even though I'm far from a flood prone area.

10 years later, another 100 year storm. Manville is a great town with many scenic areas. Sad to see this happening over and over again.

We lived there during Hurricane Floyd, losing everything once was enough for me. We left and moved to drier ground. Prayers to those who stay.

IDA has completely destroyed the valley, worse than Floyd! I don’t think anybody is going to stay here anymore, myself including but I don’t know where I will go :-(

Watching this after Ida. Has anyone ever considered the tremendous amount of houses that have been built in Somerset and neighboring counties the time between Hurricane Floyd and the present? Trees, grass and other vegetation are removed. Natural land formations are altered, and areas are regraded to suit the needs of the builders. Pavement in the form of roads and parking lots are added. All of these things increase runoff and give the rain water less chance to be absorbed naturally.
Idiot Murphy can blame the flooding of Manville on global warming because it fits his agenda. The sad truth is that Manville has always had a flooding issue. The sadder truth is that GREED is making it worse.

I would say, at this point- location and structural suitability should take precedence over cost per square foot. Folks who build in Lost Valley should build on pilings like they do in coastal areas... or move to less historically disaster prone areas. You can't completely eliminate risk, but you can mitigate it.

I hope and pray this family moved, as I'm sure the house has not fared well under Ida. Pictures from Ida make Manville look like New Orleans after Katrina.

It's just so sad..it is such a loving town..our school system is so great we love it but this flooding is just devastating! This just sucks all around and i pray for not only my family but everyone here in manville! The kids go back to school tomorrow with a 2 hour delay and i don't know how some of the family's are going to get them ready and get them to school when they no longer even have a home and its soo sad nor only for us adults but i feel like our little ones are effected the most!

My heart breaks for the people of Manville and Bound Brook. I survived the flood of 2007 Bound Brook. I was lucky because I only had 4' of water in the basement. I could have lost it all if the water came in my apartment. It didn't. I'm fortunate. For the home owners, I hope you get the buy outs. That is unless you are not slum lords like they have in Bound Brook who don't give a rat's ass and just collect rent.

Building where one shouldn't build. Taking a chance when you buy in such a place and thene choosing to rebuild after a flooding event. Not being prepared to move your stuff to the 2nd level. Not being prepared to get out with important papers/pictures. Cheap flood insurance to cover these events. Sometimes you have to face reality and move to safer grounds.

This breaks my heart. I was born and raised in New Jersey and lived through Irene. It was just bizarre and heartbreaking in the days of after the storm hit. I did not live in Manville; however, I lived in the neighboring town of Hillsborough so it still hits close to home. In case anybody is wondering, my neighborhood did not flood. My neighborhood was on higher ground and not in the flood zone. I only lost power for a few days. But I saw the floods in many other places with my own eyes. It was not pleasant.
