Glue is actually stronger than lignin, on an end-to-end joint versus an edge to edge of the same size, you'll break the wood along the grain at lower force than it takes to break the end-to-end seam. The reason people say it's a "weak" joint is because when you glue two boards that way there's a lot more leverage and force being placed on the joint than on the boards run edge to edge in a panel. The various different mechanical joins (tenon, spline, dowel, lap, bridle...) add more directions of contact that the glue holds together.
I built the same jig last weekend based on somebody else's video. I made mine too tight and it did not slide smoothly on the fence. A bunch of time sanding the inside of it corrected the issue but I sure wish I had seen your video with the paper trick before I built my jig. Thank you for sharing.
Jigs make it so much easier and accurate. A lot of people don’t know about spline joints and it’s a good option depending on the project and tools you have on hand. Great job covering it and let’s continue to inspire others to build something awesome! 👍🏼
heck, a week ago I had no idea how to make splines, so I figured it was time I learn! Hopefully this video can help other folks see how easy they are :)
I did my first spline joints on a shadow box build I did and it made it one so much stronger and two super aesthetic. But I did so without a jig and the end was just as good as people who use a jig.
As someone new to woodworking you make it every easy to follow and adding in extra information ( I didn't know the saw blades don't cut flat) I really appreciate it!! Also THANK YOU for adding it metic measurements!!! This Aussie Gal love it!! :)
They are far more useful than just for strength... I love the look it provides to the edge of a joint and dresses it up considerably, especially if you select the right wood type (color) to offset the main parts.
I like the idea of using a table saw, router table, edge sander and track saw because not everyone has access to "specialized" joinery like biscuits, dowels and pocket holes. Does the person exist who has a table saw and watches woodworking videos that can't pull off dowels? I mean just those four microjig clamps and the router bit is $100 I bet which would also get you into everything but a domino. You could even buy a used biscuit joiner and cut spline slots with that. I know the rebuttal here, I just think the caveats are always funny on these videos. Why not just say here's a cool vertical panel slot/miter/spline jig (because it is) without making weird excuses for it.
Love it. Yet i see so much wood waste it seems when the cut off happens. I always do my best to use as much of the wood as possible so cut off is way less. However the projects always covers that cost but still. I like to be as efficient as possible.
I just bought 1/4 sheet (2’x4’) 3/4” thick at Home Depot in Indiana. No flaws or voids on either surface. No voids visible on the edges but that’s because I sorted through the whole stack. I’m sure there are some small voids internally but I don’t even want to know what marine plywood costs. I paid just under $59 USD.
“Woodworkers always get this wrong”. What I thought you were going to address, you got wrong like so many others. If the spline fits the slot perfectly and you don’t apply glue to both the spline and the slot, you are not gluing all of the spline joint.
Wow, Splines are so easy to do right on a table saw, without any extra jigs etc. Why do you make it so unnecessarily complicated ? No jig or fancy cut plywood is necessary.
@@SpencleyDesignCo yes. Do a follow up on how to do perfect splines. My video on that did well and I’m about to make a new updated one. Getting the perfect spline thickness is hard lol
I'm addicted to your videos. Great job. But also I wonder how shitty your normal job it has to be, since you repeat over and over that you want to quit it :D
Do you have a AI bot that writes all of these click-bait video titles or something? I really enjoy your videos, but these non-descriptive, generic, repetitive and click-baity titles are not only a needless distraction, but they hinder my ability to search your videos for some tip that I remember you had but can't remember exactly where you provided it.
I have come to the point if I find a video, even if the info is actually good and helpful I just downvote it. That way the people who feel they have to click bait rather than let their information stand on it's own don't come up.
I totally agree with @Brenden (and others) -- you make a "promise" in your video title Mr. Spencley and then you don't deliver on the promise. "I don't understand why people still do this"

Your method of explaining the small details most other channels gloss over is much needed. Keep it up!

Sure thing, T! I hope you’ll follow along with all the other projects I’ve got too!
It seems like every time I do some woodwork I screw something up and think I just suck at this. I love this jig.

I learned a couple of things from you today! Thanks for the tips. I will be applying them to some of my next projects.
I use the “spline” as a decorative add to my frames NOT for structural use.
So what exactly do pros do wrong?
i think a table saw is specialised equipment
A comment for the algorithm!
But seriously, your explanation on how to make spline joints was so well done 👌
Thanks Matthys! You’re really making your way through the videos! 🤣

Thanks for the support! This one is super super easy to make!
I’ll be making that jig as soon as I get to the states and pickup my forever saw 😍. Great video man 👊🏼
Nice!!! What are you gonna grab when you’re back?
Birch plywood is nearly 300 dollars where I live (Australia). How much is it in the USA?

Four and three fourths of an inch? Wow, we're very lucky to have metric where I am.
Thanks so much for the matchfit demonstration - I am interested in trying the system myself. How else do you use it? Thanks

Dang! Looks great!
Thank you! I’m hoping to have the final piece of furniture finished in a few days or so!
Why is this video named like this? It is nonsense.
